ABOUT SMILE FOUNDATION

Inspired by Senge's philosophy, a group of young corporate
professionals came together in 2002 to set up Smile
Foundation to work with grassroots initiatives for effecting
positive changes in the lives of underprivileged children, their
families and communities.
Smile Foundation is a national level development organization
directly benefitting over 300,000 children and their families
every year, through 158 welfare projects on education,
healthcare, livelihood and women empowerment, in more
than 700 remote villages and slums across 25 states of India.

Beliefs • Work as a catalyst in bringing sustainable change in the
lives of underprivileged children, youth and women, with a
life-cycle approach of development.
• Enable the civil society across the world to engage
proactively in the change process through the philosophy
of civic driven change.
• Adopt highest standards of governance to emerge as a
leading knowledge and technology driven, innovative and
scalable international development organization.
Mission
• Smile Foundation is to empower underprivileged children,
youth and women through relevant education, innovative
healthcare and market-focused livelihood programmes.
Belief
• Smile Foundation believes that unless members of the civil
society are involved proactively in the process of
development, sustainable change will not happen.
Believing in this principle of ‘Civic Driven Change’, Smile
Foundation sensitizes the civil society in order to make
them partners in its mission.
Smile Programmes 1. Education (Mission Education)
• Since 2002, more than 200,000 children in the age
group of 3 to 18 years have been benefiting to avail
basic education under Mission Education Program
• Currently, 112 Mission Education Centers across 19
states of India are directly reaching close to 20,000
children
2. Health (Smile on Wheels and Smile Health camps)
• Since 2006, reached over 8 lacs people across 378
urban slums and remote villages through Smile on
Wheels and Specialized Health Camps
• Currently, 22 Smile on Wheels are operational in 16
states reaching approx. 2 Lac beneficiaries
3. Livelihood (Smile Twin e-Learning Programme)
• Since 2007, more than 17,000 underprivileged youths
have been trained and more 14,000 youth have been
placed in over 150 brands of various sectors
• Currently, 74 STeP centers are operational across 14
cities and benefiting 5650 beneficiaries
4. Girl Child and Women Empowerment (Swabhiman)
• Since 2005, successfully made a difference to the lives
of over 150,000 underprivileged women and
adolescent girls
• Currently, 5 programmes are running across India –
reaching over 40,000 women and girls
Approach Lifecycle Approach - Children, their Families and the
Community
Over the years, Smile Foundation has evolved its intervention
strategy on the lines of holistic life cycle approach. Realizing
that the well-being of children is intertwined with their family
and community, Smile has adopted the integrated model of
development, weaving initiatives like education for children,
healthcare for people, skill enhancement for youth, and
empowerment of women and girls. Children, their families
and the community become the target group for Smile
Foundation’s activities.
Programmatic • Over 2 lakh underprivileged children have been able to get
Achievements educational opportunities through Mission Education
programme.
• More than 14000 youth secured a dignified living through
STeP, an employability skills programme.
• Smile on Wheels has directly benefitted over 8 Lakh
disadvantaged people with special focus on women and
children.
• 1.5 Lakh girl adolescent girls and women have been
empowered through Smile’s women empowerment
programme called ‘Swabhiman’.
• Over 2000 girls have been supported with scholarship on
merit-cum-means basis for continuity of their higher
education.
• Capacities of over 1000 grassroot NGOs have been built on
the aspects of fundraising, communication, project
management, accountability and good governance which
are critical for long term sustainability and scalability of
the o3organizations.
• Smile Foundation has been awarded ‘Special Consultative
Status’ by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in
2012.
Non-programmatic • Smile Foundation is the first development organization in
Achievements India which has conceptualized & produced a full length
parallel film called “I am Kalam” focusing on Right to
Education. The film won the ‘National Award 2011’ along
with 18 International awards across the globe. The film
sensitized over 2 million privileged individuals.
• Smile has consistently engaged with the most influential
and the most respected public figures from all walks of life
in sensitizing the privileged citizens to contribute their bit
towards creating positive change.
• Smile’s interventions characterized by ‘REAL WORK, REAL
CHANGE’ have been highlighted by international, national,
regional and local [project level] media consistently.
