LASQ2 Polynomial Functions

This learning activity sheet for Mathematics 10 focuses on polynomial functions, covering key concepts such as graph interpretation, rational zeros, and problem-solving. Students will learn to illustrate and describe polynomial graphs, apply the rational zero theorem, and solve related problems. The document includes examples and exercises to reinforce understanding of polynomial functions.

I. INTRODUCTION
In this learning activity sheet, you will explore polynomial functions. You will
be able to understand key concepts of polynomial function, specifically in
describing and interpreting graphs, rational zeros, and solving problems
involving functions.
II. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Illustrates, describes and interpret graphs of polynomial function.
2. Use the rational zero theorem in finding the possible rational zeros of a
polynomial function.
3. Solve problems involving polynomial functions.
III. VOCABULARY LIST/CONCEPT

Example: P(x) = 3x3

– 10x – 9x + 4
2 1 2 4
Possible rational zero:{±1 , ±2 , ± 4 , ± , ± ,± }
3 3 3
factors of 4: 1, 2, 4
factors of 3: 1, 3

function degree example graph

linear 1 f(x)= 2x + 1

quadrati
2 f(x)=x2 – x - 2
c

cubic 3 f(x)= x3 + 3x2 − 6x − 8

quartic 4 f(x)=x4 – x3 – 7x2 + x + 6

Illustrative Problem Involving Polynomial Function:

Example 1: A demographer predicts that the population P of a town t years from now can be
modeled by the function P(t)= 6t4 – 5t3 + 200t + 12000. What will the population be two years
from now?

P ( t ) =6 t 4−5 t 3+ 200t +12000 Given function

4 3
P ( 2 )=6 (2) −5 ( 2 ) +200(2)+12000 Evaluate the function for t = 2

P ( 2 )=6 (16)−5(8)+ 400+12000 Simplify exponentials

P ( 2 )=96−40+400+12000 Simplify further/ add

P ( 2 )=12456 The town is expected to have a population of 12456 after 2 years.

Example 2: A model of rectangular prism with x dimension on each side was remodeled such
that one edge was increased by 3 units, the second edge decreased by 3 units and the third
edge was decreased by 1 unit. Find the function that represents the remodeled rectangular
prism.

Let x + 3 represents the first edge of the remodeled prism

x – 3 represents the second edge of the remodeled prism
x – 1 represents the third edge of the remodeled prism

Volume of rectangular prism = (length) (width)(height)

=(x+3)(x–3)(x–1)

¿ ( x 2−9 ) (x−1)
3 2
¿ x −x −9 x +9

The polynomial function that represents the volume of the remodeled/new rectangular prism is
3 2
v ( x )=x −x −9 x +9 cubic units.
