Artificial Lift Monitoring
DataLITE User Manual

Overview

The RMSpumptools DataLITE is a fully weatherproof, hostile environment ready enclosure that has all
the functionality built in to connect to the RMSpumptools downhole monitoring system, in
conjunction with an ESP three phase choke from RMSpumptools.

The DataLITE can be powered by either a standard 110-240VAC supply directly into the AC terminals,
or by a standalone 24VDC power supply. Only one of these supplies can be connected at a time.

The panel is also fully isolated and includes various self-tests that run on start-up and various intervals
in order to diagnose and eliminate problems, while keeping installation and downtime durations to a
minimum.

Log files from the downhole sensor are automatically generated as CSV files and save to internal
storage. By pressing the eject button on the panel, these logs will dump to the customer facing card,
which is protected by a sealed threaded cap. This cap must always remain in place unless removing
the microSD card.

The DataLITE also communicates via Modbus (RS485), Analogue (4-20mA) and a NO-P-NC relay. Highly
detailed layout of Modbus parameters and values are highlighted further in this manual. Two analogue
outputs are available. While one is fixed to intake pressure, the other can be configured to several
different parameters and ranges. The relay can be set to trigger from a variety of sources (motor
winding temperature, intake pressure etc.), and can be set to LL or HH (trigger above or below a certain
value).

Wiring
All wire connections should use suitable crimps and ferrules and be secure and free from damage or
splits. Always run electrical tests on connections before supplying power to the DataLITE.

The input terminals are compatible with 26 – 12 AWG wiring.

Power Supply

110-240VAC
Each DataLITE has a built in 24VDC power supply, compatible
with 110-240VAC input. On the internal DIN rail, a fuse holder
is pre-supplied with a 1A fuse. This fuse holder can be opened
to isolate the AC supply. To power the DataLITE using this
configuration, see the diagram to the right.

24VDC
Alternatively, it is possible to power the DataLITE directly with
your own 24VDC supply, by connecting the DC supply directly
into the terminals shown below. Note that when in AC
configuration, 24VDC output will be available out of these
terminals, but is not recommended for use other than during
installation and testing.

Two input terminals are free for each +ve and -ve. It does not
matter which terminals you use.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO POWER THE DATALITE USING BOTH AC

AND DC SUPPLIES AT THE SAME TIME.

The enclosure is completely grounded inside and out, meaning that the earth wire from the AC supply
is the only earth point you need to connect.

The two right hand glands are interchangeable and may be more useful for different functions (i.e.
use the armoured gland for sensor input rather than power supply). Use these as need be. The
armoured gland uses an M20 thread, whereas the smaller gland uses M16. Both can be swapped or
adapted to other more suitable customer supplied glands.

Version 1.0 DataLITE User Manual Page 18 of 63

Artificial Lift Monitoring
DataLITE User Data

Sensor

Operation
Each sensor communicates with the DataLITE via the
RMSpumptools Three Phase Surface Choke and fuse kit.
Consult RMSpumptools manual 279-38-001 for more
information on installation of the choke.

The two-way connector on the choke should be connected to

the DataLITE by two core twisted cable into the two sensor
terminals, as shown.

As mentioned previously, depending on the ESP installation, it

may be more suitable to use armoured cable for the surface
choke instead, or to swap the glands out for different sizes.

Installation/Testing
It is possible to connect an RMSpumptools ESP Sensor or an
RMSpumptools Simulator directly to the DataLITE during testing. This
can be useful for running in hole without the choke setup.

Do not power the ESP or perform megger tests when the DataLITE is
connected without a choke in this configuration.

For the sensor by itself (bench testing etc.), connect the high voltage
pin (using a suitable boot kit, never use a clip directly on the sensor
pins) directly to the + (white) terminal on the DataLITE, and use a
secure clip to connect the chassis of the sensor directly to the – (black)
terminal on the DataLITE. Power on the DataLITE and communication
should be normal.

For connecting to the sensor on the ESP (Running in hole etc.), connect one of the three phases directly
to the + (white) terminal on the DataLITE, and connect a suitable ESP grounding point (cable armour
etc.) directly to the – (black) terminal on the DataLITE.

See RMSpumptools manual 279-38-002 for more information on ESP Sensor installation and running
in hole.

Everyday Use
Start-up delay

After power is supplied, the DataLITE will not

immediately light the relay trip status red or
green. It will wait to ensure that the data
received is correct before properly setting the
trip.

When testing a sensor (at well site or in the

workshop), always have a flash card inserted
and leave the DataLITE running until the trip
status is properly lit.

Active and passive testing LED Indicators

At power on, the DataLITE undergoes active

self-testing, which tests and confirms the
interfaces and memory are working properly.

Analog loops and communication ports are

loop-back tested. The built-in flash memory
modules and the external removable flash
microSD card are also tested.

After initial active self-testing, the DataLITE will

regularly continue to run passive tests.

All onboard voltages are constantly monitored

to ensure they are within specification. Analog
loops are checked for disconnect faults and
scaling faults. Modbus ports are monitored
continuously, and a warning will be displayed
if a problem is detected.

Memory is constantly checked, and warnings

given if removable memory is reaching
capacity, is write-protected, is missing or
otherwise has a problem.

Should a hardware fault be detected, please

contact RMSpumptools, who will attempt to
help diagnose and troubleshoot at site and see
what further steps need to be taken.

Several conditions in the DataLITE will lead

only to an amber warning.

The LED indicators shown on the right of this

page highlight various issues and statuses
within the DataLITE.

Flash Memory
Overview

Each DataLITE contains a customer-accessible microSD card, protected by a sealed threaded cover. By
using the eject button and removing this cover, it is possible to access the stored information, which
includes:
- Well data logs (.csv format)
o Pressures
o Temperatures
o Vibrations
o Trip data
o Event data (SD card removed etc.)

- Test reports (.txt format)

o Current loop diagnostics
o Surface and sensor power supply information
o Serial numbers, firmware versions etc.

It is highly recommended to always run a DataLITE with a microSD card inserted and verify that logs
and reports are storing properly to the card during installation. Without a microSD card inserted, test
reports will not be saved at all. These reports contain vital information about the operation of the
entire system and can be crucial when troubleshooting issues with the ESP or monitoring system.

While test reports save directly to the external microSD card, all data logs will first save to internal
storage, and will only transfer to the external microSD card when the “Eject” button is pressed.

Ejecting

Before attempting to remove the cover or microSD card, always press the “Eject” button firmly, while
the DataLITE is powered. The “SD” card icon should go green as below:

When this indicator turns green, it is safe to remove the microSD card by following the next steps.

Removing cover

Unscrew the threaded cover from the front of the DataLITE. The wire connecting the cover to the
enclosure should allow you to safely hang the cover below.

There is a white LED underneath the microSD socket, that will be brightly lit if the microSD card is
ready to be removed. If this LED is not lit, attempt the previous “eject” steps again.

Once the card is ready to be removed, carefully remove from the socket.

Once the card has been removed, ensure the threaded cover is inserted back into the hole, and that
the O-ring on the cover is fully engaged against the face of the enclosure.

Card Contents

By opening the card contents on a PC, the following layout of files should appear:

RMSpumptools (folder)
o [Well name].ini
o [Well name] (folder)
 LOGS
 REPORTS

There may be other folders generated (PTC and 279 folders) that hold further diagnostic information
on the downhole gauge and inner DataLITE equipment that can be useful for troubleshooting.

DataLITEs can be swapped to different wells. In this case, the well name in the DataLITE settings should
be changed (or by creating a new [well name].ini file and changing the settings inside and loading this
new .ini file from the settings (see main manual)).

In the case of a new well setup, a new [well name] folder will be created, protecting the logs from the
previous well.

Version 1.0 DataLITE User Manual Page 43 of 63

Artificial Lift Monitoring
DataLITE User Data

Log Files

Within the “LOG” folder of the well name folder, .csv files are generated. The format of these files are:

[Well name] [DataLITE UID] LOG [First Timestamp] [Last Timestamp].csv

New files will automatically generate when needed.

The DataLITE UID is static and cannot be changed. This makes it possible to determine which specific
DataLITE was used, regardless of well name, and to differentiate in various circumstances (same well
name across two sites etc.).

Each file is in comma-separated values (csv) format and can be opened natively in Microsoft Excel or
other similar spreadsheet applications.

Note that the log files are saved internally and will not be copied to the external microSD card unless
the “eject” procedure is followed properly. The files are not removed straight away from internal
storage and can be ejected and copied over to external microSD cards 3 times before being removed.

Report Files

These files are generated automatically at various stages (power up, self-test, ground fault, on eject
etc.) and contain vital information about the system. The format of these files are:

[Well name] [DataLITE UID] REPORT [Timestamp].txt

The reports show current issues and settings from the DataLITE, alongside some data from the
sensor at the time. The DataLITE communicates internally via Modbus with a transceiver module to
the downhole sensor and shows information about these communications.

Note that reports will not be saved at all if there is no external microSD card inserted.

PTC/279 Folders

There are extra files generated inside these folders relating to specific parts of the system, such as
test reports on the sensor and the surface equipment that makes up the DataLITE.

These folders should be backed up with the other folders at the time for future diagnostics with
RMSpumptools. The reports inside these folders will not be stored without an external microSD card
inserted.

3X: Input Registers

These hold the data from the sensor and generated by the module itself. Values may be scaled, coded,
be numeric or be ASCII.

Scaled values give a GAIN and UNITS. The GAIN has been applied before the value is put into the
response from the module. To receive the original value, you must divide the response by the GAIN
stated. The module does not offer different units of measurement.

The Modbus Master or related control system must convert the units if required. Input Registers are
arranged in functional sub-ranges within the 3X Block. These sub-blocks are:

Block Description

332XX Running Information

333XX Self-Test and Monitoring

338XX LCD Data

Not all these variables may be implemented with the sensor connected to the module. Refer the PN
for the sensor and documentation with it. Only registers specific to the Surface Read Out are listed
here. Refer the Transceiver documentation for its registers which can also be accessed on the
DataLITE’s Modbus RTU port.
