DSP - Sheet2 - Spring 2024

The document outlines properties of discrete time systems, categorizing them as static/dynamic, linear/non-linear, time invariant/varying, causal/non-causal, and stable/unstable. It presents several systems for examination, including their mathematical representations, and poses questions regarding their time invariance and behavior under specific conditions. Additionally, it includes tasks for sketching signals and comparing outputs for different systems.

Systems

Problem (1)
A discrete time system can be:
o Static or dynamic
o Linear or non-linear
o Time invariant or time varying
o Causal or non-causal
o Stable or unstable

Examine the following systems with respect to the properties above:

o 𝑦(𝑛 ) = cos{𝑥[𝑛 ]}
o 𝑦(𝑛 ) = ∑𝑛+1
𝑘=−∞ 𝑥[𝑘]

o 𝑦(𝑛 ) = x[n]cos[𝑤0 𝑛]
o 𝑦(𝑛 ) = 𝑥[−𝑛 + 2]
o 𝑦(𝑛 ) = 𝑥[𝑛]𝑢[𝑛]
o 𝑦(𝑛 ) = 𝑥[𝑛] + 𝑛𝑥[𝑛 + 1]

Problem (2)
Consider the system: 𝑦[𝑛] = 𝑇{𝑥 [𝑛 ]} = 𝑥[𝑛 2 ]

Determine:

a) Is the system is time invariant

b) To clarify the result in part [a] assume that the signal

1 0≤𝑛≤3
𝑥[𝑛] = {
0 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒
Is applied into the system
1) Sketch the signal 𝑥[𝑛]
2) Determine and sketch the signal 𝑦[𝑛] = 𝑇{𝑥 [𝑛 ]}
3) Sketch the signal 𝑦 ′ [𝑛] = 𝑦[𝑛 − 2]
4) Determine and sketch the signal 𝑥2 [𝑛] = 𝑥[𝑛 − 2]
5) Determine and sketch the signal 𝑦2 [𝑛] = 𝑇{𝑥[𝑛 ]}
6) Compare the signals 𝑦 ′ [𝑛] and 𝑦2 [𝑛]. What is our conclusion?

c) Repeat part [b] for the system: 𝑦[𝑛] = 𝑥[𝑛] − 𝑥[𝑛 − 1]

d) Repeat parts [b] for the system : 𝑦[𝑛] = 𝑇{𝑥 [𝑛 ]} = 𝑛𝑥[𝑛]
