Unveiling the treasures of Antique
Alvarico, Jeirine | 02 February 2025

Have you ever wondered why it is called ANTIQUE?? Just like the meaning itself, it is not
just a province it's a place that has been through a lot and has incredible stories that need to
be uncovered.

Antique is located in Panay Island, Philippines, where history and culture are evident
everywhere. There are many unexplored destinations in this province that travelers must
discover. It is home to indigenous tribes such as the Tirurays and Karay-a that represent the
craftsmanship and skills of weaving. Until now their creativity is still passed down through
generations from their sinamay textile to their carving skills, which they still continue to
practice and maintain to preserve the history.

Beyond its cultural treasures, Antique has so many landscapes that can take your breath
away. The Malumpati Cold Spring is one of these, offering crystal clear water coming down
from a natural spring, making it cold and refreshing in the summer season. Malumpati Cold
Spring is more than just a place to aid the summer heat, but it's a spot for relaxation and
bonding with family and friends. The sounds of the flowing water and the rustling leaves from
the greenery around it help you to escape from the stress of modern life in the city.

Let's now take a ride back in time and never forget to list down the Antique Rice Terraces in
your bucket list. A 200,000 years old destination representing the sustainability practices of
indigenous people. It offers a panoramic view that you will fall in love with, the greenery from
the rice is suit against the earthy tones of mountains that give you a painting vibe
masterpiece. Walking through these terraces makes you appreciate the hard work of the
farmers that shape and sustain this landscape so that up until now, new generations can still
thrive from this.

For those travelers who seek island adventures, Antique has to offer, Seco Island is a home
of indigenous people called Ati, it is a stunning beach that has pristine water and fine sand,
you can relax and enjoy water activities they have including snorkeling, diving, and island
hopping. to reach this paradise requires a two to three-hour boat ride from Tibiao port. Since
Seco Island is an unspoiled or untouched island, visiting it can help you to escape from the
crowded and loud city and have a chance to reconnect with nature. In contrast to Seco
Island, Nogas Island is a 59 hectares island that offers a unique blend of natural beauty that
represents a slightly rugged destination, surrounded by clear water together with its vibrant
marine life, making it a good location for swimming and snorkeling activities. this secluded
island is very accessible to tourists and it takes approximately 30 minutes to an hour boat
ride from Culasi or Tibiao before reaching this hidden gem

Celebrating Heritage: The Vibrant Festivals of Anique 5

Briguera, Kim| 02 February 2025

According to Cambridge dictionary “antique” refers to something made in an earlier period

that is valued for its beauty, age and high quality. Personally, I think that this meaning relates
extremely to the province of Antique wherein you can find festivals being celebrated
enriched with cultural traditions and practices. I think that the name of the place suits them
best considering that this location is indeed rich in beauty, high quality craftmanship that has
been passed down through generations and classical timeless beauty. Today we will talk
about two specific festivals from Antique- the Binarayan Festival which is the most famous
festival in Antique and Banigan Festivals which focuses on the artistry and bamboo
craftsmanship of the local weavers. These two festivals preserve the essence of what it
means to be “antique” keeping the province’s history and traditions alive for future
generations.

The Binarayan Festival serves as evidence of Antique’s strong connection to its historical
heritage as a travel destination. This festival is held annually every December. It was first
conducted long before on April 30-May 1, 1974 . The festival begins with a fluvial parade,
sailing from the port to Malandog Beach in Hamti , this place is located particularly in
Barangay Malandog which plays a key role in the Binirayan Festival, as it commemorates
the first Malayan settlement in the Philippines by Datu Sumakwel. Each year, the people of
Hamtic reenact this historic event during the festival in December. Aside from this, the
celebration includes beauty pageants, cultural performances, street dancing, parades, and
exhibits showcasing local arts and crafts. While the Binarayan Festival celebrates the
Antique’s historical origin, another interesting festival event, the Banigan Festival, is held
every 15th of April. The word “ Banigan” comes from the Tagalog word "banig" meaning mat,
is the primary product of the municipality. The festival emphasizes the significance of banig
weaving and showcases a range of products made from banig, such as hats, bags, slippers,
and gowns, which serve as key sources of livelihood for the local community. It speaks a
powerful story about Antique’s heritage, its people and its home.
It is safe to say that the Binarayan and Banigan Festivals are more than just colorful
celebrations; they are the living threads that weave together Antique's rich history, culture,
and craftsmanship. Both festivals—whether highlighting the destination’s historical origin or
showcasing its artistic local traditions—it acts as a proof that their community indeed exert
efforts to preserve their culture, and they stand as the guardian of their ancestry. As Antique
continues to shine as a destination for both history and artistry, these festivals not only
preserve the past but also inspire future generations to honor and celebrate the unique
legacy of this remarkable province. Through these celebrations, Antique truly comes alive,
offering a glimpse into its soul for the world to see. Discovering these kinds of festivals
makes me admire our culture more after seeing how creative, artsy and imaginative our
ancestry is. Also, grateful that these practices are being maintained and passed on through
our generations no matter how modern the digital advancements are these days. 6

Antique Cooking Techniques: Reviving Traditional Methods of the
Antique's recipes
Sani, Sittie Aisha | 02 February 2025 7

Antique's history of foods has continued to improve for thousands of years and up until now,
it continually reflects on our culture, economic and social. Since the civilization of ancient
and up until to the Revolution of the Industrial, one of the vital role that shapes Filipino
culture is foods. As we might not know, during ancient times, grains, olives and fish
dominates the diets while the medieval cuisine was characterized by stews and roasted
meats. During the Renaissance, the renewal of ideas in classic cuisine with such spices,
different kinds of sauces and sugar as one of the ingredients in cooking became a hallmarks
of haute cuisine. When times has come that the Industrialization had to take the
responsibility and hold it, foods that are easy to be serve such as canned goods, street foods
and mass-produced foods became rampant and well know not only in our country,
Philippines, but also generally and globally. Until today, food still remained as a symbol of
every individual's tradition, status and culture which sometimes influence other people with a
different culture and sometimes getting to the point that they also not learn it but adapting
the cooking as well.

Foods that are originally well known and from Antique such as Nilaga nga manok kag
piripinals, Ginat-an nga tambo kag patuyaw, and Himugo reflect became known as part of
Philippines' rich culinary heritage. The three recipes introduce publicly the native ingredients
that is from Philippines, its unique and clean cooking methods as well and the making the
people around the world by staying in touch with people which has a power to influence
other that continues to be passed on future generations.

Part of the Filipino culture is the use of unique techniques in cooking and its procedures.
Indigenous and Colonial ingredients such as tomatoes, chili peppers, corn, cacao, kamote,
ube, langka, gata, tuba & etc. Indeed, by trying to make or taste these some traditional
dishes, everyone can acquire a deep understanding of the Philippines history of foods that is
rare, one-of-a-kind but originally all from the Philippines. Upon adapting this type if cooking
from Antique, for somehow, the connection to the highest narrative of antique foods was
supported by the other culture and tourist as well.
Upon researching, I found out that according to a study which is entitled, "Exploring Culinary
Heritage that insights from Local Gatekeepers in the Province of Antique Philippines", was
written by Mary Rose Gemma Rodriguez and John Erwin Pedroso, the globalization of
Antique foods continues to grow each year. It is also mentioned in that article that the use of
indigenous ingredients, traditional healing practices, and the impact of modernization on
culinary traditions gave more competency and inspire the Filipino people to continue grow
and not letting the culture, especially in cooking, sink down. Also, recipes such as Sinanlag
nga Manok highlight the incorporation of local ingredients and sustainable practices.
