Problem 1

The document describes two machining problems involving turning and facing operations on cylindrical workpieces. It provides detailed calculations for material removal rates and total time required for each operation step. The first problem involves rough and finishing turning on a cylindrical piece, while the second problem focuses on a facing operation on an engine lathe.

Problem 1: A turning operation is performed on a

cylindrical work piece whose diameter and length are

15.00 cm and 25.00 cm in order. The operation is carried
out in 3 steps. The first one is rough turning with a
cutting speed which is 0.9m/s and feed which equals 0.6
1 mm/rev ,so the diameter of the work piece became
14.75 cm. The second step is also rough turning that
causes the diameter to be 14.30 cm with the same feed,
this step needed 2.68 minutes to complete. The final
step is finishing turning at which the diameter became
14.00 cm a 2.5 m/s speed of cutting and a 1.03 mm/rev
feed.
Determine:
a) Material removal rate in every step.
b) The total time to carry out the whole operation.

- Solution -
a) In the first step we have:
L = 25.00 cm, D0 = 15 cm, v = 0.2 m⁄s , 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑑 =
0.01 𝑚𝑚/𝑟𝑒𝑣, d= 0.25 cm
R MR = vFd = 0.9 ∗ 1000 ∗ 60 ∗ 0.61 ∗ 0.25 ∗ 10 =
82350 𝑚𝑚3 /min
In the second step we have:
D0 = 14.75 cm, Df = 14.30 cm, d = 0.45 cm, feed = 0.61
mm/rev, Tm= 2.68 min, L = 25.00 cm
L 25∗10
N= = = 152.9 𝑟𝑝𝑚
Tm F 2.68∗0.61
V = πND0 = 3.14 ∗ 152.9 ∗ 14.75 ∗ 10 = 70851.6
mm/min = 1.18 m/s
RMR = vfd = 70851.6 ∗ 0.61 ∗ 0.45 ∗ 10 =
194346 mm3/min
The third step:
V= 2.5m/s, feed = 1.03mm/rev, depth of cut = 0.3 cm
RMR = vfd = 2.5 ∗ 1000 ∗ 60 ∗ 1.03 ∗ 3 =
463500 mm3/min
b) Total time = Tm1+Tm2+Tm3
ν1 0.9∗60∗1000
N1 = = = 360𝑟𝑝𝑚
πDo1 15∗10
𝐿 25∗10
Tm1= = = 1.14 𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝑁𝑓 360∗0.61
Tm2 = 2.68 min
𝑣3 2.5∗60∗ 1000
N3 = = = 341.22𝑟𝑝𝑚
𝜋𝐷0 3.14∗14∗10
L 25∗10
Tm3 = = = 0.39 𝑚𝑖𝑛
NF 2∗341.22∗1.03
Total time = 0.39 + 1.14 + 2.68 = 4.21 min
Problem 2: A facing is performed on an engine lathe in
two steps. The work piece is 100mm in length and
80mm in diameter. In the first step the spindle speed is
150rpm , the feed is 0.12mm/rev and the tool moved
to the half of the outer diameter. In the second step
the tool moves to the center of the work piece with a
feed = 0.16mm/rev and a spindle speed 225rpm
Determine:
a) The tool velocity in the two steps.
b) The net time needed to complete this operation.
- Solution -
a) In the first step:
D0= 80mm, N = 150rpm , feed = 0.12mm/rev
Fr= Nf = 150 ∗ 0.12 = 18𝑚𝑚/𝑚𝑖𝑛
In the second step:
D0= 80 – 40 = 40mm, N = 225rpm, feed = 0.16mm/rev
Fr = Nf =225 ∗ 0.16 = 36𝑚𝑚/𝑚𝑖𝑛
D0 −Df 80−40
b) In the first step: L = = = 20𝑚𝑚 ,Time
2 2
𝐿 20
of first step (Tm1) = = = 1.11𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝑁𝑓 18
D0 −Df 40−0
In the second step: L = = = 20mm, Time
2 2
𝐿 20
of the second step (Tm2) = = = 0.556𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝑁𝑓 36
Total time = 0.556 + 1.11 = 1.666 min
