11.1. Functions of Several Variables
Definition 1 (Function of two variables)
A function f of two variables is a rule that assigns to each ordered pair of
real numbers (x, y ) in a set D a unique real number f (x, y ). The set D is
called the domain of f and its range is the set of values that takes on, i.e.,
R = {f (x, y )|(x, y ) ∈ D} .
Notation. Function f of two variables
z = f (x, y )
The variables x and y are independent vari-
ables and z is the dependent variable.

If a function f (x, y ) is given by a formula and no domain is specified, then
the domain of f
D = (x, y ) ∈ R2 : f (x, y ) is well-defined .

Graphs
Definition 3 (Graph of Functions of Two Variables)
If f is a function of two variables with domain D, then the graph of f
Gf = (x, y , z) ∈ R3 : z = f (x, y ) and (x, y ) ∈ D .
The graph of a function f of two variables is
a surface S with equation z = f (x, y ).

the level curve of f at k, where k is a constant (in the range of f ).

approaches the point (x0 , y0 ) along any path that stays within the
