Project - 5 - Rainfall Map Descriptive

The document outlines a project to create hydrological rainfall maps for Iraq and Kurdistan using GIS tools, specifically ArcMap. It details the steps for downloading rainfall data, processing it, and generating maps for the years 2011-2020. The project includes instructions for exporting the final maps and a requirement to describe new tools learned during the process.

Hydrological Modeling Using GIS

Project_5
Rainfall Map
Due Date: This lab is due by day October 31st , 2022, at midnight
Mohammed G. Mohammed, Ph.D., University of Salahaddin-Erbil

Abstract
This project is to create a hydrological map for rainfall in any place in the world such as IRAQ
country, which is Part 1 of the project. The other Part 2 is to get a rainfall map for Kurdistan.
The project target is to teach you how to download weather information such as precipitation
(pre) and how to convert the data to ArcMap. The project will go over some new tools which
are important to complete this matter.

Inputs:
- Rainfall data for 10 years (2011-2020) (cru_ts4.06.2011.2020.pre.dat.nc)
- IRAQ shape file (IRQ-adm1)
Outputs:
- Rainfall Map for IRAQ for 10 years (2011-2020).
- Rainfall Map for Kurdistan for 10 years (2011-2020).

Steps:
- Copy and paste the (Base_Project_Structure) and Rename it as Project_5
- The Rainfall data from (2011-2020) can be downloaded from the:
High-resolution gridded datasets (uea.ac.uk)

Go to:

CRU TS v. 4.06> Local copy>cruts.2205201912.v4.06>pre>

cru_ts4.06.2011.2020.pre.stn.gz

The following windows show the above link to get the rainfall data
- Copy and paste this file into the Data folder in Project_5
- Extract the zipped file (cru_ts4.06.2011.2020.pre.stn.gz) using (extract here)
- Open ArcMap
o Connect to Project_5
▪ Data
From Toolboxes:
- Multidimention Tools>make NetNCD Raster Layer

o Select the data that has been unzipped and downloaded:

(cru_ts4.06.2011.2020.pre.dat)
o From band dimension (Optional): Select
Time
OK
Now check the project
- Add the study area for IRQ_adm1

- Zoom to the layer of IRQ_adm1

- For the pre_Layer:
Data> Export data >
Extent (data frame(current)
Location: indicate your Projetc_5/Data
Name: -P_Extent.tif
OK
- You can remove: pre_layer

- Check the current coordinate system

- Select the WGS 1984 UTM Zone N38
Apply>Ok
The map will take the following shape

The P_Extent1.tif currently has no correct coordinate system. To check that

Right-click on p_Extent1.tif:
Data>Export Data>
Spatial Reference> Data Frame (Current)
Name: P_SpaRef.tif

The spatial reference will be corrected

- Romove the P-Extent1.tif
- Save as the file as Project_5_RainfallMap in the Other folder in Projecr_5.

Check the number of bands:

- It sounds like the P_SpRef.tif has 120 bands, every 12 bands representing one year:
for example: (band 1, band 2, band3, …, band 12)represents the bands for the year 2011,
and (band 13, band 14, ...band 24) represents the year 2012, and so on
- To get the sum of all years (10yr, which is 2011-2020), we are going to use the Spatial
analyst tool> local>Cell statistics>OK
o Name the Output Raster (Sum_P_SpaRef.tif)
- To get the average of all years (10yr), we are going to use the Spatial analyst tool> Math
algebra>raster calculator
o "Sum_P_SpaRef.tif" / 10
▪ Outer raster: Ann_P_SpaRef.tif
OK

Now we need to convert the annual Precipitation into points:

Conversion> form Raster to points> Name the feature point (Raster2Points)>OK

From Spatial analyst Tool> Interpolation>IDW

Hint: be careful with this window!!!
o Input point features: Rster2Points
▪ Z value field: Grid_code
• Output raster: …./IDW_IRQ
o Output cell size: 30
Ok
Environments
Processing extent
Same as Layer IRQ_adm1
- Raster Analysis:
- Cell size>As specified Below> 30
- Mask:
IRQ_adm1
- Prepare the layout map for this as part 1:
o Click on the layout frame line
• Grid> new grid> Measured Grids > gird name Measured Grid
Next>Next>Next>Finish >apply>OK
• Click again on the layout frame>properties> labels>

- Export this map as Part 1 of this project_5 IRAQ Rainfall Map

Part 2
- Creation of Kurdistan Rainfall Map 2011-2020
- Open attribute table for IRQ_adm1 shapefile
- Select Arbil, As-Sullaymaniyah, and Dihok by directly clicking on the left side of the
rows and holding the Control Key (Ctrl) that has these governmental Cities under
Name_1

- To extract these three governments, Right click on IRQ_adm1

o Data>Export Data>OK

o
o
o

- The Name: Kurdistan

- Save as type: Shapefile

o
o
- Unselect the three governmental cities by clicking on (clear selected features)
- Close the attribute table

- Spatial Analysis Tool> Extraction>extract by Mask

Hint: the IDW_IRQ_Precipitation layer has the name IDW_IRQ in the Data Folder, so
select that layer (IDW_IRQ) as the input raster

-
Work on the layout and use 9 classes of the rainfall map as follows, and make them integer
numbers. Insert North arrow, scale, and legends.
To be turned in:
Question 1: Please screen capture, or copy-paste your final during this exercise into a
word document and export it as a pdf, then submit it via the Website. For the following
maps:
o Part 1: Rainfall Map for IRAQ- mm/year (2011-2020)
o Part 2: Rainfall Map for Kurdistan- mm/year (2011-2020)

Question 2: Write a short-bulleted description with a snapshot if possible, of at least

5 (five) different new tools encountered (during conducting this project_5) when finding,
copying, importing, editing, or submitting the final pdf result.
Hint: don’t google it and copy things that are not related to this project. The
description is for the new things that you are exposed to through this project.
