INTRODUCTION
Accept Calvary greetings from the office of the Chaplaincy Coordinator, in the blessed name of our Lord
and Saviour Jesus Christ.
We continue to be grateful to God for all of you, who have made yourselves available for God to use to
impact the lives of pupils, students, workers and teachers in the educational institutions. It is our desire
to continue to make Christ the foundation of all aspects of education in our institutions with the aim of
preparing all who pass through our institutions to be formidable tools in the hands of God in the present
day society.
We appreciate you all for the good work during the Spiritual Emphasis especially some of the Church run
schools for the feedback to the Department. You are doing great work on the theme for this year from
Hebrews 12:14. To continue to build on this theme, during the Education week we shall be focusing on
“Growing in Service.” Christ came to earth to serve and save the lost. When His task was done, He
handed the responsibility to His disciples. Therefore, as disciples of Christ in the present world,
Christians are called to serve. Service refers to all sorts of work from the most inferior and menial to the
most honored and exalted (Lev 23:7; Num 3:6ff). Christian service is the act of doing work that shows
God’s love to others with a willing heart. The lessons for the week will focus on Christian service unto
God, one another, and other issues relating to man displaying the love of God in the world.
The Lessons are tailored towards helping pupils, students, workers and teachers to grow in their life of
service in all the domains. The following are our expectations as we go through the Education Week
lessons:
That the learners at the end of the lessons will be able to:
Define the elements of serving, cultivate a genuine desire for faithful service to God and take
practical steps to enhance their service to God.
Explain the meaning of serving others, cultivate a deep motivation to serve one another and to
choose a Specific way to be of service in their own context
Understand the importance of taking care of the environment, recognized how others have
taken care of their environment and commit to taking care of the environment.
Understand the various ways of serving one’s country; develop a strong desire to serve the
country and to be practically involved in serving the country.
Describe the importance of taking care of one’s soul, develop an appreciation for God’s
provision for soul care and create steps to begin caring for their souls.
Again thank you for making yourselves available for God to use for His kingdom purpose. Let us continue
to be exemplary in our service, so that we can pass this on to the coming generations.
Our Education Week lessons for this year have been extracted from Building Godly Teenagers volume IV
lesson six to ten.
The Lord bless you

Lesson one
Do: Say practical ways how you will improve your service unto God.
Introduction: When God delivered the Israelites from captivity in Egypt, taking them through the desert
and nations that did not know Him as God, He was exposing them to the varied nature of the world yet
charging them with the responsibility of serving Him faithfully and having no other God beside Him.
Serving God was a decision that the Israelites had to make with determination (Josh 24:15). Serving God
was a commitment to love Him and to carry out other acts of services like taking care of the family,
concern for others, helping the needy and more. The Christian life today is confronted by various
modern day trends, influences, and practices that challenge sincere service unto the Lord. Yet Christians
have to make the decision to serve God and Him alone. How should Christians serve God?
1. Fear Him (Deut 10:12c). Fear can be defined as “an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by
awareness of danger.” When one senses danger of any sort, they become afraid.
Another definition of fear is “profound reverence and awe especially toward God.” This means
having deep admiration, love and worship of God. When Christians are called to fear God as an
act of service, the second definition applies. God is not a source of danger but a source of relieve
from danger therefore, fear for Him is reverence.
Interaction: How does fear contribute to our service unto God?
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
To fear God is to draw close to Him for refuge (Ps 31:19). If we fear God, it keeps us from
running after harmful things of this world that are contrary to the will of God. Our fear of God
gives us healthy respect for Him and is a source of all we need to live by in this world (Pro 9:10).
Therefore, to faithfully serve God, we must fear Him.
2. Walk in His ways (V 12d). The challenge with serving God today is that many people want to
work for God but are not willing to walk in His ways.
Interaction: What is the difference between working for God and walking in His ways?
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
Walking in the Lord refers to your being. Who are you in God? For one to walk in the ways of
3
God, that one must have a relationship with Him. This command was given to people who were
God’s own by the design of God and today it is having a relationship with Him through Jesus that
makes you His own. Walking in His ways is obeying Him, listening to Him as we read His word.
Walking in God’s ways means going against the standards and systems of this world. Walking
with God in the world today is like running against the direction of the wind. It demands
steadfastness and commitment. You cannot be passive in your relationship with God and
effectively walk with Him in this world. Serving God in work is good but beginning with serving
Him in walk is very important. For Scripture, says, “each one’s work will become manifest, for
the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire…” (1 Cor 3:13). This means that your
walk with God, determines the kind of work you build on the foundation.
3. Love Him (v. 12e). Loving God requires that we know Him, are obedient to His commands, reject
all forms of wickedness by embracing all good virtue. Our love for God is not to be divided
between other things. Just like the Israelites were expected to love Him whole heartedly, with
all their minds, souls and Spirits, so too are we to serve Him out of love not obligation.
Interaction: What are some of the things in the world that can divide our love for God?
_______________________________________________________________________
4. There is no one worthy of our love than He. We love Him not because He is desperate for our
love, but because He first loves us (1 Jn 4:19). The best motivation for our service unto the Lord
is not duty but love. When we serve God because we love Him, we don’t grumble, we will not be
pressurized and tensioned to do so. Being duty conscious without love for God is service that
does not honor Him. But He honors love as a motive for our service. Therefore, let us serve Him
by loving Him.
5. Observe His commands (v 13). We cannot talk about effective service of the Lord without
obedience to His commands. The Scripture is clear about the Laws of the Lord, whatever the
Lord expects us not to do must not be done and what He expects us to do must be done. If we
truly know who God is, observing His commands will just be a way of life because He will give us
the grace to do so. He is the one working in us for His good pleasure (Phil 2:13). Therefore let us
serve God by obeying His commands. Serving God by obeying His commands is for the benefit of
those serving. If God receives the glory of our service, we will receive the blessings.
Is serving God as explained by the lesson a matter of choice for the Christians or compulsory? Why?
________________________________________________________________________
4
Can someone who loves God live a life of disobedience to Him? Explain___________________
______________________________________________________________________________
Application: It is imperative for Christians to serve if they desire to grow in other areas of their Christian
lives. Therefore, all Christians must fear God, walk in His ways, love and observe His commands as a way
of serving Him.
Implementation: State those things in your life that make you think that you have not been serving God
faithfully. How are you practically going to improve your service unto God through fear for Him, walking
in His ways, loving and obeying His commandments?
5
Lesson Two
Do: choose a particular way through which you will be of service to someone this week
Introduction: In making the nation of Israel, God was intentional in building a community of believers
who will live, care and love one another. The laws given to them where not just in relation to their
service of God but also included their service for one another. The New Testament church was a
community of people living together and serving each other in different ways. When Jesus came, He
gave the summary of the Law which is loving God with everything and loving neighbor as self. The New
Testament is filled with “one another” commands and instructions. About 59 “one another” passages
which exhorts believers to do something for another person e.g be at peace with one another (Mk 9:50),
wash one another’s feet (Jn 13:14), love one another (Jn 13:34) etc. These are behaviors that are an
expression of an overflow of our relationship with Jesus. When we have a growing relationship with
Jesus, we also grow in our relationship with fellow human. Because it is in serving humans that we prove
our service to God (1 Jn 4:19-21).
Lesson explained
1. We must not misuse our freedom (Gal 5: 13). If there is something that stimulate human
conflict and self –centeredness is freedom. This freedom lead to selfish desires that are
expressed in “me, I, myself.” Christians are called to freedom but their freedom is not an
opportunity to keep yielding to sinful desires.
Interaction: what is your understanding of the freedom in Christ?
______________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________
What is the difference between Christians freedom and freedom of the world?
______________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________Freedom in
Christ is misrepresented in the world today to mean license to live as you want after all grace is
abounding. This is not God’s intention, He desires that Christians use their freedom both for the
service of God and one another in love. When Christians understand what it is for them to be
free in Christ, they will not live for themselves but for others and this is what it means by, “faith
expressing itself in love.” Coming from urging the Galatians not to be slaves to the law, Paul is
urging them to be slaves to one another. To serve is from a word which means “to be a slave of”
and is a command which should be on going. So the Christian’s form of being free is to make a
6
habit of serving one another motivated by love. It is normal according to the flesh to want to
please self but the consciousness of the command to serve one another in love will keep us from
the misuse of our freedom.
2. We must love others as ourselves (vv.14-15). It is a common practice that everyone loves
him/herself. And if Christians can measure the weight of love they have for themselves and
intentionally pour on others, then the law will be fulfilled. The fulfilled law here is not the Law of
Moses, it is the law of the Spirit of God which generates faith in man.
Interaction: Can there be someone who does not love his/herself? _________________
What can be the reason for self- hate?_________________________________________
can such a person love others? How?__________________________________________
Some people grow in environments that do not encourage self-love. But faith in Christ is able to
make them love themselves and others. To live a life of service unto others, you must love them.
Loving others as yourself is not an easy task that is why God makes it a command. There must
be intentionality in loving others, loving others must be purposeful and must be sacrificial.
Loving others will include sharing with them material things (Acts 2:45) bearing their emotional
burdens, serving them with the gifts the Spirit has given us (Heb 10:25).
3. We must show hospitality without grumbling (1 Pet. 4:9-11). In the past Christian hospitality
was greatly cherished as traveling was difficult and inns were scares so Christians had to open
their homes for others. Every Christian has received the hospitality of a warm welcome into the
kingdom of God with gifts of mercy and grace to sustain his/her stay. It is this kind of hospitality
Christian are called to show to others without grumbling. Without grumbling is a clear indication
that hospitality is costly and burdensome. Practicing Christian hospitality is practicing servant
hood. It is loving people through Christ and making them feel special. Therefore, this special act
of service should not be done with grumbling. Don’t be selfish with your gift as a child of God
but use it for the benefit of others. Be slaves to another because God has called you for that and
you will give account of how you used His grace. We are blessed with resources that can be
beneficial to one another, so let the diverse grace poured out on us, enable us to be open and
receptive to people around for the glory of God. As God’s stewards, we cannot boast that our
service unto others is by our power because God supplies that all we need for His glory (v.11).
Benefits of serving others. Serving others give you joy and satisfaction. It reduces stress and pain from
them (Acts 20:35). Serving others builds great relationships here on earth and prepares for fellowship
with God. Serving others gives you an avenue to use your gift. Serving others advances the kingdom of
God here on earth.
7
Is it possible to be doing good and at the same time angry or not pleased? Why?______________
______________________________________________________________________________
Are there any benefits of serving one another? N ame some. _____________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
Application: Though very difficult to do, loving others as an act of service unto to them is what all
Christians should be doing. Therefore, let us endeavor to love others sincerely in way of service and
being hospitable to all the Lord brings our way. His grace is enough to enable us do the difficult act of
loving others as we love ourselves.
Implementation: Say practically how you will be of service to someone this week. Every day you meet
people in diverse needs, what steps will you take to be of service to them.
8
Lesson Three
Do: Share with someone in the class how you will intentionally take care of the environment.
Introduction: The Scripture is clear on how man should live and relate with his environment. “The earth
is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein” (Ps 24:1). This verse implies
that man does not have anything to call his own. Which means he is just a care taker of the things of
God. God has given man the responsibility of taking care of the things He created including man,
knowing that he will give account of everything. Christians are to care for the environment in a way that
God’s creation is sustained, protected and enhanced (Gen. 1:28-30), so that all of His creation may fulfill
the purpose He intended for it. Therefore, our care for the environment is first for the glory of God and
for our benefits.
Discussion: What is included in our care for environment? ____________________________
____________________________________________________________________________
If we fail to care for the environment, God’s people will suffer. Christians must care for the environment
because God cares for the physical world as well as the spiritual, and the restoration of creation is part
of the gospel (Rom 8:22-23).
Lesson explained:
1. It should be worked and protected (Gen 2:15). After creating man and giving him the authority
to maintain, protect and enhance His creation (Gen 1:28-30), God increased his responsibility by
placing him in the garden to work and keep it. Work means “to till,” and keep means “to
protect, watch over.” In defining the responsibility of Adam in the garden, he was to till and
dress the garden and to watch over it. Taking care of the environment is part of God’s good
purpose for humans eventhough is highly neglected today. Today people live in places that look
like trash. Others dump their refuge not minding whether the next person is affected or not.
Adam’s willing obedience to God who made him, was going to be a form of happiness for him.
God can also give us joy and happiness through the care of our environment. Natural
environment no matter how beautiful it may be initially, if left uncared for might degenerate
and become wild through the poverty of the soil. Therefore, Christians must grow in their
service unto God by dressing and keeping their environment. Working to take care of the
environment is not punishment.
9
2. It should not be polluted with blood (Num 35:33-34).
Interaction: How does killing and polluting the land with blood be an uncaring attitude for the
environment? ___________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
The message in these verses is very clear in relation to human life and the land. The idea here is
that when man cares for human life, he preserves the land. The shedding of human blood
pollutes the land. This means that crime of murder is not only an offense against the sanctity of
life; it is a pollution to the land God has freely placed man in. The pollution of the land with
innocent blood is a source of curses to the living (Gen 4:10 -11). This could be the reason many
people in our nation and world over are frustrated. The cry of the innocent blood reaches God
as a sign of man’s disobedience and refusal to take care of the land or environment by
preserving human life. Christians are expected to grow in service and it must include service in
taking care of the environment through taking care of man. There must be high value placed on
human life.
interaction: What is it mean to place value on human life? What is involved? __________
______________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________Placing value
on human life means, not pouring refuge to affect the health of others. It means seeing man
from God’s perspective.
Note: It is very important to note that working and keeping the garden included taking care of the trees,
flowers, animals and all that was in it. Taking care of the environment involves the neatness of the
environment, the health of the plants, animals and the life of humans. Caring for God’s creation is part
of our service to God. When we care for creation, we can conserve energy. We express God’s care over
all things and prove our obedience to God’s command in (Gen 1:28 and 2:15).
Reflection 1: What is the environment that man is supposed to take care of as an act of service?
___________________________________________________________________
Reflection 2: Can man create anything that exist in the world?_________________________
Reflection 3: How is shedding of blood of disadvantage to the environmental care?
_____________________________________________________________________
Reflection 4: What new thing have you learned from this lesson?_______________________
___________________________________________________________________________
Application: For man to live healthily, he must dress his environment and keep it need. Let us be
determined to serve God by taking care of our environment, by how we dispose of our dirt, by how we
value human, by how we enhance what God has created etc.
Implementation: let learners share with the class some practical ways they are going to improve the
care of their environment.
10
Lesson Four
Do: Show practically how they will be involve in serving their country
Introduction: Service unto the nation is service to God. But it’s rather unfortunate that many Christians
alienate themselves from anything relating to the country. As Christians we are members of a village
which is found in a city and the city is found in a country. Therefore, completely separating one’s self
from the country is not possible. Even if one thinks that his own country is evil and runs to another one,
you still have responsibility toward it. In Genesis 41:37-49, the story of Joseph is told to us and how he
served the land of Egypt by storing up much food during the years of plenty to save lives during the time
of famine. This service reached to his own people, as Israel benefited from it. The Scripture is also clear
about Christian’s responsibility to the country.
Lesson explained.
1. Being submissive to the leaders of the country (Rom 13:1-5). Paul wrote this letter to Gentiles
who were believers living in Rome. It is a direct call to believers to see God in every governing
authority for they are place there by God. Sometimes the governing authorities might be bad
but God has a purpose He wishes to accomplish through them. He appoints some leaders not to
bless the people but to judge them. Submission to the governing authority is a call to submit to
God and is a command and not just a statement that Paul made.
interaction: what is the implications of Christians not submitting to their leader?
______________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________ It is possible
that Paul chose to use submission here because obey may imply, observing all the demands of
the leaders. He uses submit which can imply that if you put yourself under those leaders, there
are opposing laws to Scripture that you will not obey not as a rejection of the leaders but as
obedience to the one who put the leaders in place. To say that “there is no authority except
from God,” is true of every leader, even of Satan, because the authority he exercises is given to
him by God. Therefore, a way of serving ones country is by submitting to the governing authority
put there by God.
2. Paying taxes as required (Matt 22:15-22; Rom 13:6-7). In chapter 22 of Matthew, the Jews
always came with a tempting question to Jesus, “is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” This
was not a question to learn but to trap Jesus and probably accuse Him of teaching His disciples
11
to be irresponsible people. Jesus, just as He taught His disciples in Matthew 17:24-27 to pay
temple tax to support the work of the temple, makes it clear to them that paying tax is giving to
the government what belongs to the government. Christians have the obligation to perform
their civil duties as a way of serving their country. The taxes may be cumbersome and financially
draining, yet we know that these authorities permitted by God to be in leadership are ministers
of God (Rom 13:6-7) and will certainly account for everything. Therefore, for Christians, our duty
is to serve the country by paying our taxes.
3. Praying for all people (1 Tim 2:1-2). There are services that people render to others that may
not be physically quantified yet are very important that not having them poses a great danger.
Some people have become bitter about their countries to the point that praying about anything
in that country to them is an abomination. It was not also easy for the Jews under the Roman
authorities. They desired liberation and freedom, but instead Paul asked that they made,
specific prayers, general prayers with thanksgiving for all people, for kings and all who were in
high positions. The reason for such prayers is that they live peaceful and quiet life, godly and
dignified in every way. Serving your country through prayers is praying for yourself because if
the leaders lead well because of your prayers, you will have peaceful and quiet life. And if the
people around you behalf well because of your prayers, you will life a quiet life. Therefore,
serving through prayer is an aspect of true gospel living.
Interaction: what are some of the ways through which you can serve your country?
_____________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________ There
are many other ways of serving you country as a person. It could be through the job you do, through
voting, carrying out environmental projects and more. The important is that the willingness and
determination to serve.
12
Lesson Five
Feel: Appreciate God for the privilege to take care of their souls
Do: list steps on how they would begin to take care of their souls
Introduction: It is very possible in a world where your attention is demanded 24/7 by different things to
neglect care for yourself. There is the necessity to treat yourself to soul-care practices. The physical body
as well as the soul need rest, refreshment and nourishment. The soul is very important, though its
health is often neglected because it is invisible. Care can be given to the soul if Christians are intentional
in prioritizing the one who truly satisfies their souls. Soul care has its focus on Jesus who brings a lasting
peace and joy.
Discussion
Even pastors in the church need soul care because they can be carried away by the cares of the flock
they are leading to the neglect of their soul’s health. For Christians to effectively grow in serving God,
others, environment, and country, they must grow in care for their own souls. There are other aspects
of services that we render to ourselves to keep the body functioning healthily, but soul care centers
directly on Jesus. The phrase soul care might not be found in the Bible but there are important concepts
that indicate why we need to care for our souls.
Lesson explained
1. Practice the Presence of God through Solitude and silence (Ps 62:1-2). Soul care is the daily
process of cultivating healthy thought patterns. Biblical soul care allows you to practice a
healthy holistic lifestyle before God. The practice of solitude and silence is a moment every
Christian needs to enable the deep inner voice of their own true self be heard in relation to
their obedience to the Word of God.
Interaction: What does your deep inner voice in the statement above mean? ______________________
_______________________________________________________________________ _____________
Solitude and silence help you attain a spiritual peace that comes from being perfectly at one with your
true self. The Psalmist indicates that in silence, his soul waits for God. It is in silence and solitude that
one can truly have a reflection of God and His salvation. At such moment, your soul will earnestly seek
after God who alone will grant it (your soul) perfect health (Ps 63:1). Solitude is not just about the
13
physical isolation, it is about being in the busy world but shorting out the world around you by just
reflecting on He who is the salvation of your soul and building a healthy relationship with Him. The
practice of God’s presence for soul health is beholding His power and glory, His steadfast love which is
better than life, generating into praise and a satisfied soul (Ps 63:2-5).
2. Love God with your life (Deut. 6:5). The greatest command and one which is the most
important is for Christians to love the Lord with their whole being. To the Israelites the
command comes after the shama “Hear,” a recitation that was done by the Israelite to keep
them conscious that they were not to worship another God.
Interaction: How is loving God a way of caring for your soul? ___________________
________________________________________________________________________It is clear that
loving God is a way of caring for your soul because it belongs to Him and He alone knows the cleansing
He does in us before we can have a healthy soul. Having a healthy soul is not like cooking food and
eating, or washing clothes and wearing that we can do for a physical health. It is a spiritual work that
God alone does in us. Therefore the best place to stand and receive soul health is in loving God with our
whole being. Loving God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your might, is a
declaration of your humble need of Him daily for the satisfaction and health of your soul. The call to this
threefold commitment “indicates the totality of one’s commitment in the purest and noblest intentions
of trust and obedience toward God.”
- When you do not have a healthy soul, you will struggle in your relationship with God and others.
- Soul care focuses on Jesus who brings lasting peace and joy, instead of distracting ourselves with
the stress in our lives, we focus on how He alone can meet our needs. Soul care helps us fight
temptations and have peace with God.
- Soul Care centers directly on Jesus and therefore enables us to be connected with Him at a
deeper level.
- Soul care guarantees us a place in the kingdom of God (Matt 16:26), because losing your soul
means missing out on eternal life with God.
Reflection 3: Can one take care of his soul by sleeping well, wearing clean clothes or eating good food?
Explain _______________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
14
Application: Taking care of your soul as a child of God is paramount to your living right with God and
with others. Be intentional in taking care of your soul by practicing the presence of God and loving God
with your whole being, partnering with the Holy spirit to give glory to God.
Implementation: Share with the class how you will care for your soul. List the things that have been
chocking your love for God leaving your soul desperate for a relationship with Him and say how you are
going to remove them.
Reflection Section
