Y7 Functions Notes

This document explains the concept of functions, highlighting the relationship between input and output through function machines. It illustrates how to determine outputs from inputs using operations, specifically the example of adding 7. Additionally, it provides exercises for students to practice identifying inputs and outputs in function scenarios.

WHAT IS A FUNCTION?
input operation output

A function relates an input to an output. There is one

output for a given input.

A function can be represented using function machines.

To find output, you need to work through the operations

from left to right.

To find the input, you need to work through the

operations from right to left.
FUNCTION MACHINE
input +7 output

Inputs are put into the machine, and then the operation in the
machine transforms the input into the output. In this case, the
operation is +7. For example, if the input was 5.

Input: 5
Operation: +7
So, 5+7=12
Output: 12
FUNCTION MACHINE
input, x +7 output, y

Input, x Output, y

5 +7 12

6 +7 13

7 +7 14

8 +7 15

9 +7 16

So, what is the relationship between x and y? y=x+7

FUNCTION MACHINE
input, x +7 output, y

To find output, y, you work through the operations from

left to right.

Example: x + 7 = y

To find input, x, you work through the operations from right

to left.

when you move it to the other

Example: x + 7 = y side. Your operation will be the
x = y - 7 opposite.
