HW 2 – Force Vectors

1) Force F acts on the frame such that its

component acting along member AB is 650 lb,
directed from B towards A, and the
component acting along member BC is 500 lb,
directed from B towards C. Determine the
magnitude of F and its direction ϴ. Set φ =
60°.

AB = 650 lb
BC = 500 lb

c = 45 + φ → 45+ 60 = 105

2 2
𝐹𝑟 = 650 + 500 − 2(650)(500)𝑐𝑜𝑠(105) = 916. 9 𝑙𝑏

Magnitude = 916.9 lb

𝐹𝐵𝐶 𝐹 500 916.9

𝑠𝑖𝑛∝
= 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑐
= 𝑠𝑖𝑛∝
= 𝑠𝑖𝑛105
−> 𝑠𝑖𝑛∝916. 9 = 500𝑠𝑖𝑛105

∝ = 31.78°

Magnitude F: 916.9 lb
Direction: ϴ = 31.78°

2) If the resultant force of the two tugboats is 3 kN,

directed along the positive x axis, determine the
required magnitude of force FB and its direction ϴ.
  Fr = 3 kN → 3000 N
  Fa = 2 kN → 2000 N
  Fb = ?

2 2
  B → 𝐹𝑏 = 2 + 3 − 2(2)(3)𝑐𝑜𝑠(30) = 1. 615 𝑘𝑁 = 𝐹𝑏

𝐴 𝐵 𝐶
  𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑎
= 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑏
= 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑐

Only need a and b.

ϴ = a → sinϴ = sina

1.615 𝑘𝑁 2𝑘𝑁
𝑠𝑖𝑛(30)
= 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑎
→ sina = 0.61919 → a = 38.25 degrees.

ϴ = 38.25 degrees

 𝐹𝐵 = 1. 615 𝑘𝑁 −> 1615 𝑁, ϴ = 38.25 degrees

3) Resolve each force acting on the gusset plate into its x and y components, and express each
force as a Cartesian vector.
F1:
F1 = Fx = 900 N

F2 =???:
Fx = 750 sin(45) = 530.33 N
Fy = 750 cos(45) = 530.33 N

F3: Downwards to Fourth Quadrant

Cosθ = ⅘ = 36.86
Sinθ = ⅗ = 36.86
Tanθ = ¾ = 36.86 degrees

θ = 90 - 36.86 = 53.14 + 270 → 323.14

Fx = 650 cos(323.14) =520.07 N

Fy = 650 sin(323.14) = -389.9 N

x y

F1 900 N 0

F2 530.33 530.33

F3 520.07 -389.9

Fr 1950.4 N 140.43 N

F1 = 900i
F2 = 530.33i + 530.33j
F3 = 520.07i - 389.9j

F = 1950.4i + 140.43j
4) Determine the x and y components of F1 and F2.

 At 45° for F1.

 Fx = 200cos45 = 141.42 N
Fy = 200sin45 = 141.42N

 At 30° for F2, in negative.

 Fx = 150cos30 = 114.91 N
 Fy = -150sin30 = -(75) = -75

Fx Fy

F1 141.42 N 141.42 N

F2 114.91 N -75 N

FR 156.33 N 66.42 N

5) Express each force in Cartesian vector form and then

determine the resultant force. Find the magnitude and
coordinate direction angles of the resultant force.

Fy/Fx = F’
Fz/F’ = F

Fz=F1sin60 = 259.80 N
F’=F1cos60 = 150 N

Fx = -F’sin45
Fy = F’cos45
F1 = -106i + 106j + 259.80k
F2 = 250i _ 353j - 250k
Fr = 144i + 459j + 10k

Magnitude = Fr = 481.16 N

Direction angles:
a = 72.6
b = 17.44
c = 88.8
