25 Distinguish between exocrine and endocrine glands.

1)Exocrine glands are provided with ducts, secrete mucus, saliva, earwax, oil, milk and other cell products.
2) Endocrine glands are ductless and their products are hormones which are not sent out via ducts but are
carried to the target organs by blood. Eg: Thyroid glands secreting hormone thyroxine.

26 An inflated balloon is pressed against the wall after being rubbed with a piece of synthetic cloth. It was found
that after rubbing the balloon, it stuck to the wall. What force is responsible for the attraction that is between the
balloon and the wall?
The force responsible for the attraction between the balloon and the wall is electrostatic force.
Explanation: When you rub the balloon with a synthetic cloth, electrons transfer between the balloon
and the cloth, causing the balloon to become electrically charged. This charged balloon then induces
opposite charges on the wall, creating an attractive force between them due to the electrostatic
interaction.

30 What are the secondary characteristics of male and female.

31 Describe how coal is formed from dead vegetation. What is this process called?

32 Describe female reproductive organs with the help of a labelled diagram.

The female reproductive system contains different parts which are described as follows:
1) Ovary: There are pair of ovaries which contains the germinal cells. The
germ cells develop to form follicles and the egg.
There is one egg produced and released every month.
2) Fallopian tubes: The egg which is released enters the fallopian tube
through ostium. There are fimbriae which are
finger-like projections around the pore of ostium. There are three parts of
the fallopian tube, infundibulum, ampulla and isthmus. The ampulla is the
site of fertilisation of the egg and the sperm.
3) Uterus: This is the sac-like structure in the lower part of the abdomen in the female body. There are linings of the
cells
in the uterus. The cell lining proliferate during the process of implantation. This is the structure which is involved in
the implantation of the foetus. The bag holds the developing embryo during the period of gestation.
4) Cervix: This is the structure which is present at the lower region of the uterus. The cervix opens to allow the entry of
sperm and during the child birth.
5) Vagina: This is tube like region which gets open in the outer region of the female body through vulva. This is the
region
through which the sperms move towards the egg for fertilisation. This is also called as the birth canal through which
the child comes out.

V Case study questions:

37 The discovery of atmospheric pressure gives a fact that air has weight. The weight of the atmosphere

presses down on the earth’s surface and creates pressure on it. The pressure at any point exerted by the weight
of the air above is called atmospheric pressure.
The atmospheric pressure on the earth’s surface at sea level is one hundred thousand pascals i.e., 100 KPa. The
atmospheric pressure at a place decrease with an increase in altitude. The atmospheric pressure at a place is the
force exerted by the weight of the air column above that place. As we go up the length of the air column
above us decreases. This means that its weight and the atmospheric pressure are smaller at higher places than
at sea level. If the pressure of the atmosphere is removed suddenly, our blood vessels and tissues will rupture
due to the pressure of the blood and other fluids inside. Thus, the spacemen also wear special pressurised
suits as in space there is no air and hence, no air pressure. At the top of a mountain, some people can feel
their ears “popping” due to a decrease in air pressure. The ears pop to balance the difference in pressure
inside and outside the body
a. What is atmospheric pressure?
b. We know that there is a huge amount of atmospheric pressure on us. But we do not experience its effect. Why?
c. Why do some people feel their ears “popping” at the top of the mountain?
d. Why does the liquid rise in a syringe when its piston is pulled up?
a)The pressure exerted by the air around us is known as atmospheric pressure.
b) The pressure of the air inside our body is the same as that of the pressure outside. Therefore, we do not experience
its effect.
c) Some people feel their ear-popping at the top of the mountain due to the decrease in the air pressure. The ears pop
to balance the difference in pressures inside and outside of the body.
d)Liquid rises in a syringe when the piston is pulled up because the atmospheric pressure pushes the liquid into the
syringe to fill the low-pressure area created by the piston

38 Sita and her mother reached a jewellery shop to purchase some ornaments. She liked a necklace very much
but her mother told her not to purchase it because it is not real gold. When she checked the information tag, it
was written that 1gm gold. The necklace was quite big and heavy. She was surprised to see it and asked about
it. The salesman explained that it is a gold-plated necklace. Then Sita checked that the processof depositing a
layer of any desired metal on another material by means of electricity is called electroplating. It is one of the
most common applications of the chemical effects of electric current. Nowadays, people prefer to buy gold-
plated jewellery, similarly, iron articles are often coated with zinc or chromium to protect them from rusting
and corrosion.
In electroplating factories, the disposal of the used conducting solution is a major concern. It is a polluting
waste and specific disposal guidelines should be followed to protect the environment.
a) Where and how the electroplating waste should be disposed of?
b) What are the effects produced by the chemical reactions brought about by an electric current?
c) Name the materials that can be used for electroplating.
d) What are the applications of electroplating?
a) In an electroplating factory, the disposal of the used conducting solution is a major concern because it is a polluting
waste, therefore it should be disposed of according to the disposal guidelines of the local authority.
b) Ans: The passage of an electric current through a conducting solution causes chemical reactions. As a result, bubbles
of a gas may be formed on the electrodes. Deposits of metal may be seen on electrodes. Changes in the colour of
solutions may occur.
c) Ans: Common metals used in the electroplating process include black and silver nickel, chromium, brass, cadmium,
copper, gold, palladium, platinum, silver, tin and zinc
d) Ans.
Used in jewellery.
Purification of metals.
Changing the texture of metal surfaces.
Preventing corrosion.
Facilitating conduction in circuit boards.
39 When all the parallel rays reflected from a rough or irregular surface are not parallel, the reflection is known as
diffused or irregular reflection. Remember that the diffused reflection is not due to the failure of the laws of
reflection. It is caused by the irregularities in the reflecting surface, like that of a cardboard. On the other hand,
reflection from a smooth surface like that of a mirror is called regular reflection. Images are formed by regular
reflection.
a) “In diffused reflection the light does not follow the laws of reflection.”Is the above statement true? Justify
your answer.
b) Which type of reflection is responsible for making images? Give example.
c) Does diffused reflection decrease visibility? Justify your answer.
a)In diffused reflection, light does follow the laws of reflection, so the given statement is incorrect.
Diffused reflection occurs when the reflective surface is rough or irregular. When parallel rays of light fall on an
irregular surface they reflect while still following the laws of reflection this means that the angle of incidence and the
angle of reflection are equal. However, due to surface irregularities the normal at each point of incidence are not
parallel to each other. This causes the rays to scatter instead of remaining parallel.
B.) Sharp images are formed by regular reflections. An example of regular reflection is mirror. We are able to see sharp
images in the mirror due to regular reflection.
C.) In reality diffused reflection increase visibility in our surroundings. In irregular reflections the reflected light rays
scatter in almost every direction possible. This makes the objects visible from every angle instead of a particular angle.
Regular reflections can make sharp images but diffused or irregular reflections make non reflective surfaces like walls,
books, roads etc. visible to our eyes.
