Terms to Understand
Literacy
Before the 21st century, the word literacy simply meant
“the ability to read and write.” In the past, when
someone knows how to read and how to write, he/she
is considered a literate person. Nowadays, that may still
be true. However, the true essence of literacy these
days encompasses more aspects and skills than simply
being able to read and to write.
Literacy
21st century literacy refers to the ability to identify, understand,
interpret, create, compute and communicate using visual, audible
and digital materials across disciplines and in any context and the
values associated with it. It involves a continuum of learning
where in individuals are able to achieve their goals, develop their
knowledge and potential and participate fully in their community
and wider society.
Three of the most prevailing literacies in the 21st century are:
• Media Literacy
• Information Literacy
• and Technology Literacy
Media
The physical objects used to communicate with, or the
mass communication through physical objects such as
radio, television, computers, film, etc. It also refers to
any physical object used to communicate messages.

Media Literacy refers to the ability to read,


analyze, evaluate and produce communication in a
variety of media forms.
There are five elements of Media Literacy. A media
literate individual:
1. understands the role and 2. critically evaluates
function of media in a media content in the light
democratic society; of media functions;

3. understands the conditions


under which media can fulfill
their function;

4. engages with media for 5. and possesses skills


self-expression and needed to produce user-
democratic participation; generated content.
INFORMATION
A broad term that covers processed data, knowledge
derived from study, experience or instruction

The ability to recognize when information is needed,


and to locate, evaluate and effectively communicate
information in its various formats.
There are seven elements of Information Literacy. An information
literate individual has the ability to:

Technology Literacy
The ability of an individual , either working independently
or with others, to responsibly, appropriately and
effectively use technological tools. Using these tools, an
individual can access , manage, integrate, evaluate, create
and communicate information. There are seven elements of
Technology Literacy:
1. Media Literacy 2. Communication and Collaboration
3. Career and Identity Management
4. Information and Communications Technology Literacy
5. Learning Skills 6. Digital Scholarship
