What is Geostatistics?
“Geostatistics is the statistics of observations located in space or time. Such data can
be correlated spatially or temporally.” (Michael Edward Hohn, 1999)
“Geostatistics: study of phenomena that vary in space and/or time” (Deutsch, 2002)

What is Geostatistics?
“Geostatistics can be regarded as a collection of numerical techniques that deal with the
characterization of spatial attributes, employing primarily random models in a
manner similar to the way in which time series analysis characterizes temporal data.”
(Olea, 1999)

What is Geostatistics?
“Geostatistics offers a way of describing the spatial continuity of natural phenomena
and provides adaptations of classical regression techniques to take advantage of this
continuity.” (Isaaks and Srivastava, 1989)

What is Geostatistics?
Geostatistics deals with spatially autocorrelated data;
Autocorrelation: correlation between elements of a series and others from the same
series separated from them by a given interval;
Some spatially autocorrelated parameters of interest to reservoir engineers: facies,
reservoir thickness, porosity, permeability.

Geostatistics Approach
Detail the assumption which underlie the problem under consideration;
Characterize and interpret the behaviour of the sample data collected;
Combine the assumptions, the interpretation and statistical theory to produce the
“best” estimate for the unknown values.

Basic Components of Geostatistics
(Semi) variogram models – characterization of spatial correlation.
Kriging – An optimal interpolation: generates best linear unbiased estimate at each
location employing (semi) variogram models.
Stochastic simulation: generates multiple equiprobable realizations of the variable
employing semivariogram model.
