Chapter 1: Introduction of Solar System
1.1 Introduction
Solar power
Solar energy is a renewable source of energy that is gaining ground because of the benefits it
offers. In India, sunlight is available in abundance and there is technology available to
harness this energy and convert it into electric power. Solar power panels serve the purpose of
absorbing solar energy and converting it to electric power through the photovoltaic (PV)
effect. Most homes have a roof or a backyard which can be utilized to install solar panels.
Figure 1. Solar power in home
Solar energy is our earth's primary source of renewable energy. It is a form of energy radiated
by the sun, including light, radio waves, and X rays, although the term usually refers to the
visible light of the sun. As oil prices have gone up and other energy sources remain limited,
nations are increasingly searching for safe, reliable long-term sources of power. In this
scenario solar energy proves to be an abundant energy source which can be put to use.
Electricity generation from solar energy at present is no more a new concept to the world.
Solar electricity is being clean (pollution free), silent, limitless and free will play a great role
in the times to come in the present energy driven civilization.
Solar energy is useful in many ways, some are as listed:
Generate electricity using photovoltaic solar cells.
Generate electricity using concentrated solar power.
Generate electricity by heating trapped air which rotates turbines in a Solar updraft
tower.

Generate hydrogen using photoelectrochemical cells.
Heat and cool air through use of solar chimneys.
Heat buildings, directly, through passive solar building design.
Heat foodstuffs, through solar ovens.
Heat water or air for domestic hot water and space heating needs using solar-thermal panels.

1.2. SOLAR POWER PLANT TYPES -
There are two ways to use solar energy to generate electricity:
• Photovoltaic type: Photovoltaic (PV) systems convert sunlight directly into electricity
• Thermal type: Solar thermal plants use heat to generate electricity.
SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER PLANT -
The sun illuminates the solar cells in the PV Array, which converts light energy into electricity. The
electricity goes into an inverter and into the power lines to your home.
Modes of generation-
Conventional Silicon based
- Monocrystalline technology
- Polycrystalline technology
- Thin film technology
Concentrating PV (CPV): latest emerging
SOLAR THERMAL POWER PLANT -
The main principle involved is to focus sunlight on a receiver, where the circulating fluid gets heated &
thereby drives Modes of Generation: a steam engine to generate electricity.
Concentrating Type (CSP)
1. Line Focusing systems
2. Parabolic Trough Systems
3. Fresnel Trough Collector Systems

Chapter no.2: Types of Solar system
Once you decide solar energy is right for you, you need to consider which types of
solar systems you'll implement. There are 4 main types. They are as follows:
1. Solar collectors (aka solar panels):
These are the most well known the solar panels placed on roofs to collect and store the
sun's rays.
Figure 2. Solar Collector
2. Solar hot water
Yes, there are solar systems that harness the sun's energy to heat water. It takes a
tremendous amount of energy to heat water so using a lower carbon footprint
source such as solar energy is a good consideration. There are 2 types of solar hot
water systems:
Page | 10
Figure 3. Solar hot water
a. Active: Absorbs heat and transfers it directly to the water source in your house. This is the better
system, but it's more costly. It's better for areas that don't get much sun during various times of the
year.
b. Passive: funnels solar energy to the water source. Uses regular plumbing systems to move water
from the solar collectors to faucets. It's a simpler system but less efficient.
Solar hot water systems require a solar collector and water storage tank. The collector absorbs solar
energy and heats the water in the tank.
3. Solar space heating
The basic concept behind heating your home with solar power is the same concept that keeps
greenhouses warm. Of course, the implementation is more involved, but the concept is the same.
Again, there are two options.
Page | 11
Figure 4. Solar space heating
a. Passive: This is a simple version which uses south-facing windows and insulation to collect and
hold heat for the home. It then releases the heat as needed. The problem with this option is your
home could overheat.
b. Active: Active solar heating involves collectors that collect, hold and distribute heat.
There are two active systems:
i. Liquid systems: Pumps and valves transfer heated water to radiators, floorboards and walls. It
may be water or some other form of liquid such as non-toxic coolants.
ii. Air systems: With this system, an air collector is used to heat pressurized air that's distributed
throughout your house.
Solar space heating works best with plenty of large windows and very good insulation.
4. Photovoltaics (PV)
Photovoltaics, aka solar cells, are very good but also very expensive.
With photovoltaics, the cells convert the sun's energy into electricity with a silicon semiconductor.
That electricity can be used as your home's electricity source.
But it doesn't end here. Get this, there are several different types of solar panels to consider.
Page | 12
Figure 5. Photovoltaic
In many regions, photovoltaic systems are being deployed at large scales to help power the
electric grid.
Methods: PV systems come with small rooftop solar installations, solar pumps, off-grid
lighting systems, and large utility-scale solar power plants.
Cost-effective: The costs of PV systems have fallen dramatically, making solar power
cost-competitive.

Chapter no.3 : Conclusion
Solar energy is an efficient and sustainable solution for home heating and hot water needs.
Solar hot water systems, whether active or passive, harness the sun's energy to reduce reliance
on traditional energy sources. Active systems provide better efficiency but come at a higher
cost, making them ideal for areas with limited sunlight. Passive systems, while more affordable,
are less efficient but still a viable option for many households.
Similarly, solar space heating follows the same principle as greenhouses, utilizing solar
collectors to trap heat and distribute it throughout the home. This method reduces heating costs
and carbon footprint while ensuring a comfortable living environment.
The main components of a solar heating system include solar collectors and a storage tank,
which work together to capture and retain heat. Investing in solar energy not only lowers energy
bills but also contributes to a greener planet by reducing dependency on fossil fuels.
With advancements in solar technology, these systems are becoming more accessible and cost-
effective. Homeowners looking to adopt renewable energy should consider their regional
climate, budget, and specific heating needs to choose the best system. Transitioning to solar
energy is a step towards sustainability, energy independence, and long-term savings.
