Team Building Exercise:

In this activity, participants must pretend that they've

been shipwrecked and are stranded in a life boat.
You are sailing a ship with three friends, for a holiday
trip across the Atlantic Ocean. Because none of you
have any previous sailing experience, you hired an
experienced skipper and two-person crew.
Unfortunately in mid Atlantic a fierce fire breaks out in
the ship. Much of the ship is destroyed and is slowly
sinking.

Your location is unclear because vital navigational and

radio equipment have been damaged in the fire. Your
best estimate is that you are many hundreds of miles
from the nearest landfall.
You and your friends have managed to save 15 items,
undamaged and intact after the fire.
Each team has a box of matches, and a number of items
that they've salvaged from the sinking ship. Members
must agree which items are most important for their
survival.

List of things: a mosquito net

A can of petrol
A water container a shaving mirror
A sextant
Emergency rations
A sea chart
A floating seat or cushion
A rope
Some chocolate bars
A waterproof sheet
A fishing rod
Shark repellent
A bottle of rum
A VHF radio

Step 1: Mark your individual ranking. (10 mints)

Step 2: Meet your team member through a MS

Teams meeting.

Your groups are listed in the Excel document

uploaded in the file section.

Team members should then confer for an additional

10 minutes and decide on the team’s priority
ranking each of the items. Have the team re-rank
item on one sheet of paper. (15 mints)

Step 3: Team members should then compare their

individual rankings with those determined by the
group as a whole, and discuss why the scores differ,
if applicable. Or, if individuals would re-rank items
based on the group discussion, what changed their
minds? How were they influenced by the group?

A representative can present their group’s ranking

explaining the rationale behind their ranking.
