SECTION-A (READING)
Q1. Q1. Read the following passage carefully: (7)
1. Homework has been a part of school life for many years, but it often sparks debate
among students, parents, and teachers. While some believe that homework is
essential for learning and academic success, others argue that it can be stressful
and may not always be beneficial. Let's explore both sides of this discussion.
2. Many people, including teachers and educators, believe that homework is
important for several reasons. First, it helps revise what students learn in class. By
doing homework, students can practice and understand the concept better. This
practice is crucial for subjects like math and science, where regular review helps
build strong skills. Second, homework encourages good study habits and
responsibility. When students are given assignments to complete at home, they
learn to manage their time and organize their tasks. These skills are valuable not
just for school, but also for life.
3. Third, homework can be a way for parents to get involved in their child's
education. When parents help with assignments or discuss school topics at home, it
creates a connection between school and family life. This involvement can
motivate students and make learning a shared experience.
4. On the other hand, many students and some educators believe that homework can
have negative effects. For one, too much homework can lead to stress and
burnout. Students may feel overwhelmed if they have to spend hours each night
completing assignments. This can leave them with little time for relaxation,
hobbies, or family activities.

1
5. Another concern is that not all students have the same environment at home to
complete their homework. Some might not have a quiet space or necessary
resources, which can make it difficult for them to do their best work. This can
create inequalities and make learning harder for those without proper support.
Finally, there is the question of whether homework actually improves learning.
Some studies suggest that too much homework, especially at a young age, does not
significantly boost academic performance. Instead, it might be more beneficial for
students to have time to rest and play after school, which can help them stay
focused and happy in the long run.
6. The debate over homework is complex, and there are valid points on both sides.
While homework can help reinforce learning and develop good habits, it can also
cause stress and highlight inequalities among students. Finding a balance, where
homework is meaningful and manageable, might be the key to making it a useful
tool for education.

a) It improves their video game skills
b) It helps them sleep better at night

b) Because not all students have the same environment or resources at home

(v) What does the word "reinforce" mean in the context of the passage?

Q2. Read the following passage carefully: (7)
1. On a rainy afternoon, the small town of Greenfield was buzzing with excitement.
The Greenfield Art Museum, known for its impressive collection of paintings, had
just opened a new exhibit featuring rare works by famous artists. People from all
around flocked to see the exhibit, admiring the vibrant colours and intricate
details of each masterpiece.
2. Among the visitors were three friends: Leo, Mia, and Ethan. They were particularly
interested in a series of paintings by the renowned artist, Alana Grey. As they
moved from one painting to the next, they marvelled at her use of light and
shadow. Suddenly, a commotion broke out near the centre of the exhibit. A
security guard was speaking into his radio, and people were gathering around a
large empty frame. "The painting is gone!" someone exclaimed. Leo, Mia, and
Ethan rushed over to see what was happening.
3. One of Alana Grey’s most famous paintings, "The Midnight Garden”, was missing.
The frame was still on the wall, but the painting had vanished. The Museum
Director, Mr. Thompson, looked distraught. "We must find the painting
immediately," he said. "It’s a priceless work of art”. The friends decided to
investigate. They remembered seeing a suspicious-looking man earlier, dressed in a
long coat and hat, who had been wandering near "The Midnight Garden”. They split
up to look for clues.
4. Leo headed to the back of the museum where he found a door slightly ajar. It led
to a narrow hallway filled with storage rooms. He saw muddy footprints leading to
one of the doors. Meanwhile, Mia talked to the museum staff. A janitor mentioned
seeing someone matching the suspicious man’s description near the museum’s side
exit. He had a large bag and was in a hurry. Ethan checked the security footage
with the help of the guard. They spotted the man on camera, carefully taking
down the painting and rolling it up before slipping out through the side exit.
5. Reuniting, the friends shared their findings. They followed the muddy footprints to
the storage room and found the missing painting inside a large bag. The man was
nowhere to be seen, but they had found "The Midnight Garden.” They informed Mr.
Thompson, who was relieved and grateful. The painting was safely returned to its
frame, and the museum increased security to prevent future thefts. The friends
were hailed as heroes for solving the mystery of the missing painting.
