Task Sheet - Organic Chemistry Criterion D

The document outlines a Year 5 MYP unit on Organic Chemistry focused on the use of organic substances, particularly fossil fuels, and the search for suitable replacements to mitigate environmental threats. It emphasizes critical thinking and communication skills, guiding students to analyze and evaluate alternative fuels against fossil fuels based on various criteria, including environmental impact and sustainability. The task culminates in an essay where students must assess two alternative fuels as potential replacements for fossil fuels.

MYP- YEAR: 5

UNIT 1: Organic Chemistry

GLOBAL CONTEXT: Scientific and technical
innovation

Task sheet-Criterion -D
Name: Date:
.

LEARNING GOAL – To interpret and appraise use of organic substances such as fossil fuels and find a
suitable replacement to reduce potential environmental threat.

LINE OF INQUIRY- How use of certain organic compounds impacts our lives in various ways?

ATL Skill (s)

Critical thinking skills: Practice observing carefully in order to recognize problems; Gather and
organize relevant information to formulate an argument; Recognize unstated assumptions and bias;
Draw reasonable conclusions and generalizations
Communication skills: Read critically and for comprehension; Paraphrase accurately and concisely

Command Terms:
 Analyze: Break down in order to bring out the essential elements or structure. (To identify
parts and relationships, and to interpret information to reach conclusions.)

 Discuss: Offer a considered and balanced review that includes a range of arguments, factors
or hypotheses. Opinions or conclusions should be presented clearly and supported by
appropriate evidence

 Evaluate: Make an appraisal by weighing up the strengths and limitations.

Criterion D: Reflecting on the impacts of science

High energy prices, increasing energy imports, concerns about petroleum supplies, and
greater recognition of the environmental consequences of fossil fuels have driven interest in
biofuels. Biofuel can be solid, liquid, or gaseous fuel consisting of, or derived from biomass
— recently living organisms or their metabolic byproducts, such as manure from cows,
whereas fossil fuels are derived from long dead biological materials.

Determining whether alternative fuels provide benefits over the fossil fuels they displace
requires thorough accounting of the direct and indirect impacts. To be a viable substitute for
a fossil fuel, an alternative fuel should not only have superior environmental benefits over
the fossil fuel it displaces, be economically competitive with it, and be producible in
sufficient quantities to make a meaningful impact on energy demands, but it should also
provide a net energy gain over the energy sources used to produce it,

Q4. Analyze and evaluate sources 1-4 and write an essay to choose two alternative fuel
which can be considered as the best replacement of fossil fuel using appropriate scientific
vocabulary. In your answer you should consider following points.
D (ii & iii)
 Advantages of the alternative to fossil fuels
 Disadvantages of the alternative to fossil fuels
 Environmental impact
 Sustainability of the fuel
 Social and economic impact
 Concluding appraisal
