INTRODUCTION

University of Karachi established in 1951, is one of the oldest institutions of

higher education of Pakistan. It offers rigorous and vibrant graduate and post-graduate
degree programs in the Faculties i.e. Arts & Social Sciences, Education, Engineering,
Islamic Studies, Law, Management & Administrative Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy &
Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Science. The research and the teaching programs are
supervised by about 400 qualified faculty members. These postgraduate programs are
offered in 56 teaching departments and 20 research institutes and centers.

University of Karachi offers its graduate and post-graduate students well

equipped laboratories, digital library and video-conferencing facilities in a multi-
disciplinary environment. It is committed to uphold its tradition of producing top-
quality graduates in cutting-edge areas of Business and Management Sciences, Bio-
Medical & Engineering Sciences, Technologies, Social and Natural Sciences. The
programs are designed to match the emerging needs of industries and research and

During the last five years, University of Karachi has awarded more than 2500
MS(Surgery), MD(Medicine), MPhil and PhD degrees. Presently, around 50,000

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURE FOR

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD)
Eligibility Criteria
a) [Link]., [Link]., M.S. (with research), MBA (with 4 years BBA) or equivalent qualification
in the relevant field from HEC recognized University/Institution. There is no requirement to
submit Equivalence certificate for the graduates of Public Sector Universities.

One Ph.D. seatis especially allocated for the special person from each department / Centre /
Institute.

The admission on special persons’ reserved seats is granted only after the medical examination and
verification from the Social Welfare Department, Government of Sindh and / or civil surgeon.

b) CGPA
a) For admission in the PhD programs, a minimum CGPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0 in the semester system) or
60% (in the annual system) in the [Link] / equivalent degree being considered for admission, is
required, whether such degree was obtained from Pakistani or foreign universities.
b) If the CGPA/Percentage is not mentioned on the transcript, the candidate must produce equivalent
weightage from the parent university.
c) The students having strong demonstrated interest in obtaining PhD degree, but their CGPA is below
3.00 (minimum 2.6 CGPA) (out of 4.0 in the semester system) or 60% marks (in the annual system)
in the most recent degree obtained, may be admitted to a PhD program after fulfilling the following
requirements:
i. Shall study additional courses of 9-12 CH of level 7 taking a zero semester at admission
awarding university/HEI/DAI and score minimum 3.00 out of 4.00 GPA, and
ii. The admission committee is satisfied that the applicant’s knowledge of primary area (level
7) has sufficiently prepared him or her to undertake the course of studies of the doctoral
program.
iii. These requirements shall be in addition to any other requirements set in this policy for
admission to a PhD program.

c) Intradisciplinary Qualification

The intradisciplinary admission may only be allowed, if:

a) Departmental Research Committee allows, and
b) The applicant has a strong interest in pursuing a PhD in a different discipline.
c) The applicant has passed GRE-Subject/Equivalent Test with minimum 60% marks in the
discipline of admission and has taken 6-9 CH of deficiency courses of level 7.
d) The admission committee is satisfied that the applicant’s knowledge of the primary area (level 7)
has sufficiently prepared him or her to undertake the course of study of the doctoral program (or, in
the opinion of the admissions committee, the preparation can be deemed satisfactory by taking a few
additional courses after starting the program).

Admission Procedure (PhD)

1. All candidates will be required to submit the following documents along with the Entrance
Test Application Form:
i. Consolidated transcript/marks certificate of the last degree examination.
ii. Matric / O levels Certificate
iii. Computerized National Identity Card.
iv. Recent photograph.

2. Appearance in Karachi University Entrance Test 2024 (KUET-2024) is mandatory for all
applicants who wish to seek admission in Ph.D. program to be conducted by relevant
departments/centers/institutes of the University of Karachi.

3. (a) The test shall comprise of the following sections:

Section-I Subject knowledge 80%
Section-II English and Communication Skills 20%

(b) Candidates will be required to score at least 60% marks in each section of KUET-2024
to be eligible for consideration for the provisional admission.
(c) If a candidate has already qualified the International (subject) GRE/GAT/NTS/HAT, he/she
will be exempted from subject test component of KUET 2024. The validity of International
(subject) GRE is 5 years and NTS/GAT/HAT is for two years. The passing score is 60%.
However, the candidate has to appear in Karachi University Entrance Test 2024 (KUET-
2024) English test Moreover, interview will be mandatory.

Note: Qualifying the Karachi University Entrance Test (KUET 2024) is no guarantee
for admission.

4. All the students who qualify the Karachi University Entrance Test 2024 (KUET-2024) will
be required to appear in person for an interview to be conducted by the respective
Departmental Research Committee (DRC) to finalize the admission procedure. Distribution
of interview marks are given in Annexure-II.

Provisional Admission
Applications for provisional admission will be considered on the basis of eligibility, merit,
availability of seats and supervisors. Final admission list will be prepared by the DRC, according to
the marks secured in the Interview that will be given 50% weightage. (See Annexure-II)

Submission of Forms for Admission

Candidates selected for provisional admission will be required to complete admission form along
with the submission of the following documents:
1. Two recent photographs, duly attested by the Chairperson / Director of the
Departments/Institute/ Centers concerned.
2. Attested Photocopies of Certificates / degrees from S.S.C. to [Link]. / MS or the
prerequisite exam.
3. Attested photocopy of Computerized National Identity Card.
4. A letter of leave for three years from the employer, if the candidate is in service or an
Affidavit of non-employment stating that during research no employment shall be
undertaken, executed on a stamp paper worth Rs.100/-.
5. Teachers and employees of organization where research work is conducted are exempted
from leave. However, a NOC from the employer and a certificate stating that employment is
relevant to his/her research from the Chairperson/Director of the concerned Department/
Institute/ Center will be required and should submit within three months after the date of
provisional admission.
6. In case of foreign students, NOC from the Ministry of Education, Economic Affairs
Division and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Pakistan, Islamabad and a copy of
valid visa and passport.
7. Certificate from the Equivalence Committee, University of Karachi, in case the
accreditation status of the prerequisite degrees is not clear.

8. The Fee structure is mentioned in Annexure-I.

Duration of PhD
The duration of PhD is minimum of three (03) and maximum of eight (08) years from the date of
provisional admission. No further extension will be given. Moreover minimum duration for Ph.D.
thesis submission is three (3) years from the date of synopsis submission in ASRB.

Course Work for PhD

1. All selected students will be required to complete 18 credit hours course work.
2. Candidates are required to attend at least 75% classes of each course.
3. The student will submit a research proposal according to the approved
format of the ASRB through proper channel.

Comprehensive Examination
i. Following the completion of coursework, every PhD student shall be required to pass the
comprehensive examination to be granted candidacy as a PhD researcher, with the provision that the
student failing to pass the comprehensive exam, shall be allowed to retake the exam once.

Appointment of Research Supervisor

Faculty members of University of Karachi/ASRB/HEC approved supervisors may be appointed as
research supervisors.

Evaluation of PhD Research Thesis

During the research, the student must publish research paper/s from the thesis as per HEC-policy
before the submission of PhD thesis in the ASRB Section duly verified by QEC, University of
Karachi.
The thesis shall be evaluated by two foreign examiners. The Ph.D. degree will be awarded by the
ASRB subject to the positive reports from the Research Supervisor, two foreign examiners and a
successful public defense.
