METHOD STATEMENT
A. Bottom Ballasting and rolling
1. After the marking of centre-line; bottom required width of ballast shall be
marked by lime powder on either side of the centre-line of track.
2.Bottom ballast will be directly laid on the finished handing over surface, using
methods that avoid damage to the cable ducts/ trenches already provided for
signalling and electrical cables on the sides of embankment.
3.At site, ballast will be dumped at in intervals of the formation of the position
in such a way that ballast available near the track.
4.Dumping and spreading of ballast shall be carried out either manually or by
tractor with blade /Grader ensuring that the loose ballast thickness should be
200 mm and after compaction 175mm for depot track where ballast cushion is
250mm and for test track 250 mm thick loose ballast and 225 mm compacted
where ballast cushion is 300mm.
5.A vibratory roller of 8-10 MT capacity will be used for compacting the ballast
and for 4-6 passes will be done with roller.
6.After completion of bottom ballast before taking up further activity of
spreading sleepers, levels of ballast will be taken and submitted to the
Inspecting representative for their approval
B) Sleeper laying and squaring of sleepers
1.On completion of ballast in section, a Hydra will work from the side. It will
span the compacted ballast and pick up the sleepers in lots of six to eight.
2.The Hydra crane will place 6 to 8 sleepers on the compacted layer of ballast.
The rails will be fastened to carry the sleepers at intervals of 650 mm for depot
and 600 in test track.
3.Shifting of welded panels will be done along the track and the thus welded
rails will be placed after placing of sleepers.
4.After that, sleeper spacing and squaring will be carried out and then ERC will
be fitted.
For Free rails, sleepers will be laid on the ballast and then free rails will be
placed on sleepers. Fixing of ERC will be then done on every alternate sleeper.
Welding would be done with the help of FBW machine. sleeper spacing and
squaring will be carried out and then rest of ERC will be fitted.
5.The sleepers will be adjusted to correct spacing and squareness with the use
of appropriate templates.
C) Tamping and adjusting line & level
1.Prior to commencement of surfacing the rail should be fastened to the
sleepers, and sufficient ballast should be available to ensure that the track
obtains the necessary geometry after tamping operations to handle the
anticipated rail traffic.
2.Prior to tamping, and where necessary, the ballast shall be regulated to spread
the ballast so that tamping can proceed. Tamping of ballast will be carried out
either by manual means or hand operated tamping tools or as per the relevant
item clause given in bill of quantities.
3.Top ballasting should be done with Ballast hopper /JCB/ or other similar
metho for first round lifting of track by 25 mm (approx.). After first round of
lifting, second round of ballasting (lifting of approx. 25mm) will be done by
filling the ballast in sleepers and shoulders. Further Last and final round of
tamping will be done if required to achieve the final cushion of 250mm and
final TOR for depot track and same procedure for test track.
4.The ballast will be regulated with the help of trolley and manual means (in
case if deficiency is still there), wherever the ballast is extra, the same will be
shifted to achieve a required ballast profile as specified on GFC drawing and to
achieve ballast cushion as per GFC Drawings.
5. Subsequent tamping and lifting will be carried out to achieve final design
level and the tolerances set out by Technical Specifications.
6.With each lift, ballast will be dumped from the available surplus ballast kept
in advance alongside the formation until sufficient ballast is placed to meet the
lift and profile required.
7.Stenciling of station marking of curves with details on rails is to be
undertaken as the completion of tamping works.
8.The following minimum para meters shall be monitored and recorded during
the tamping process by contractor and after completion of the work will be offer
for checking to the inspecting agency. (Longitudinal level, Gauge, Cant/ Super
elevation, Curvature (Versine), Cross Level )
