DISCUSSION
The California Bearing Ratio is carried out to determine the CBR value of the given crushed
aggregate or soil sample. The value of the experiment is compared with the standard value of
CBR. CBR test is a compressive nature penetration test. The test is specifically used to
determine the mechanical strength as well as the potential strength of road sub grades and base
courses materials including the recycled material generally used for road and airfield pavements.
Through the load penetration graph that has been plotted, the load value at 2.5mm penetration
are 0.95kN on top and 1.95kN on bottom while for 5.0mm penetration, the load value are
obtained as 1.88kN and 3.1kN. From the result, we can also see that the CBR value for 2.0mm
penetration for the bottom is higher than the top and same goes happen for 5.0mm penetration
respectively.
Throughout the test, there are some sources of error that need to be overcome likes the wrong
number of blows per layer of soil, the soil and water mixture not mixed evenly and the soil
layers may not be uniformly compacted. So, a few precautions need to be taken, as an example,
ensuring the water distributed evenly throughout the soil mixture. Plus, stay focus on counting
the 25 blows for every layer to avoid any error that may arise.
CONCLUSION
The results obtained by these tests are used with the empirical curves to determine
the thickness of pavement and its component layers. This is the most widely used method for the
design of flexible pavement. The value of CBR is closely associated with the characteristics of
compaction, such as the moisture content, dry weight, energy conditions and the method of
compaction. Compacted soil with a moisture content higher than optimum moisture content
will have lower CBR value. The CBR value will be lower on the samples which are compacted
at optimum wet but will be higher when the applied energy increased.
From this experiment, the CBR value for 2.50mm penetration and 5.0mm penetration are 14.6%
and 15.3%. We can say that the general soil type is in category of fine-grained soils which have
the particles with size smaller than 20mm. Besides, the fine-grained soils are soils where 50%
or more particles pass through a 0.075 sieve. As conclusion, we found out that our experiment
is successful and the objectives are well determined.
