Two-Colored Scarf with Keyhole
Introduction
The two-colored scarf with keyhole is knitted in fisherman’s rib with 2 colors of yarn. It gives a beautiful
monochromatic look if two similar colors are used and gives a fun color-blocking vibe when two
contrasting colors are used. This bulky weight scarf will provide ample warmth in the winter and is a
great statement worn outside of your winter coat. The unique feature of the keyhole keeps the scarf
securely in place without the need for wrapping
Sizes: 27cm wide X 204cm long (how to adjust length is in the pattern)
Gauge: 9 sts x 12 rows to 4in (10cm). Note: gauge is not important since the scarf is in fisherman’s rib
and the width dose not need to be accurate. Finding the right weight of yarn is key.
Needles: Circular or straight needles: 10 mm [US15]. Crochet hook for fringing
Materials:
• Color A: 400g (300g if scarf length is shorter than 180cm) Rowan Big Wool – color Midori (100 g
= 80 m)
• Color B: 400g (300g if scarf length is shorter than 180cm) Rowan Big Wool – color Oasis (100 g =
80 m)
Pattern
In these instructions, I refer to the two colors "light" and "dark".
Using dark color, cast-on 27sts (or an odd number if you want it narrower or wider than mine). Slip the
first stitch purl wise, then knit across those stitches. Turn work.
Row 1A, light color: sl1p, *purl 1 below, knit 1*, repeat between *s to end of row. Do not turn work.
Row 1B, dark color: sl1p, *purl 1, knit 1 below*, repeat between *s to last 2 stitches, purl 1, knit 1. Turn
work.
Row 2A, light color: sl1p, *knit 1 below, purl 1*, repeat between *s to last two stitches, knit 1 below,
knit 1. Do not turn work.
Row 2B, dark color: sl1p, *knit 1, purl 1 below*, repeat between *s to last 2 stitches, knit 2. Turn work.
Keyhole
Repeat these 4 rows till your work measures 68* cm, end on Row 2B
(*Note: the keyhole is place at 1/3 length of the scarf. If you start the keyhole at 68cm, your scarf will
measure 68*3 = 204cm at the end. If you want to shorten the scarf to Xcm, work until measure X/3
cm)
For the next 20cm, divide the scarfs in half, put 14 stitches of the right-hand side on hold (meaning the
side opposite of where you left off). Then work left-hand side first as follows:
Row 1A, light color: sl1p, *purl 1 below, knit 1*, repeat for 13 stitches including the edge stich. Do not
turn work.
Turn work.
Repeat these 4 rows till your work measures 20 cm, end on Row 2B. Break yarn.
Work the right side next as follows:
Begin with the side in the middle of the scarf.
Row 1A, light color: sl1p, *purl 1 below, knit 1*, repeat for 14 stitches including the edge stich. Do not
turn work
Row 1B, dark color: sl1p, *purl 1, knit 1 below*, repeat between *s to last 2 stitches, purl 1, knit 1. Turn
Turn work
Repeat these 4 rows till your work measures 20 cm, end on Row 2B. Break Yarn.
Now join the left and right side with Row 1A:
Start with the dark side facing you.
Row 1A, light color: sl1p, *purl 1 below, knit 1*, repeat for 15 stitches including the edge stich, purl 1
below, k2tgt, *purl 1 below, knit 1* repeat till end of row. Do not turn work
Row 1B, dark color: sl1p, *purl 1, knit 1 below*, repeat between *s to last 2 stitches, purl 1, knit 1. Turn
Turn work.
Continue the following 4 rows until you reach desired length. My version is 204 cm
Bind-off while working Row 1B, so that the cast-on and bind-off rows are the same color.
Adding Fringing
Use a 6-10mm crochet hook to add fringe to both side of the scarf. You can get creative here by adding
one color on each side, mixed colors on both sides, or same color for both sides. There are lots of good
videos on YouTube for adding fringing to knitted scarf. However, the written instruction is below:
Prepping:
You will need a piece of card or cardboard roughly 16cm in length. Wind the yarn around the card
several times. Cut through the top loops so each fringe measure about 32cm. Repeat until you have
enough fringes to fill the ends of your scarf.
Attaching:
Fold the fringe in half to form a loop. Insert the crochet hook through a bump on the end of the scarf
from the bottom up and through the loop you just formed. Pull the loop of yarn halfway through the
stitch. Pull the ends of fringe through the loop. Pull until tight and even. Repeat until the ends of your
scarf are full to your liking.
