Natural Disasters
Natural disasters are sudden occurrences which are beyond one’s control and are an
unwanted occurrence through natural forces of the earth. It is neutral at worst which can
lead to damages, loss of life and may have devastating effects on the affected community for
years. Here are three common types of natural disasters:
Hurricanes:
They are violent storms that develop in the tropical area of the world and are characterized
by high wind velocities, large precipitation amounts, and coastal inundations. An example is
the Hurricane Katrina that hit the Gulf Coast of the United States in 2005 and left huge havoc
on New Orleans and nearby districts including severe floods.
Earthquakes:
An earthquake is defined as an event in which energy in the earth’s crust is released in a
sudden movement which causes the ground to shake. Perhaps the most well-known life-
threatening natural disaster that has occurred recently is the Haiti earthquake in the year
2010 that devastated this Caribbean country, particularly the city of Port-au-Prince.
Wildfires:
Wildfires are those fires that burn uncontrollably, burning-in and extending themselves in
vegetation, forests, grassland, or urban environments. The bushfire season that happened in
Australia during 2019-2020 was possibly one of the worst in Australia’s history, burning
thousands of homes, killing lots of wildlife, and also had drastic impacts on the environment.
Conclusion:
To sum it up, one can state that hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires are one of the most
powerful kinds of natural disasters that bring huge harm. This is why it is necessary to
familiarize with them so that one can be ready when they occur. Including the consequences
of the occurrences, we are able to minimize their effects and improve our communities.
