FIVE KINGDOM CLASSIFICATION
VERTEBRATES
AIM: To examine and study the different Chordata animals - Pisces, Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves
and Mammalia
MATERIALS REQUIRED - Mounted specimens of animals belonging to different classes.
OBSERVATIONS:
CHORDATA
All chordata exhibits the following characteristics:
1. Presence of notochord at some stages of life.
2. A hollow dorsal nerve cord is present.
3. They have paired gill pouches.
4. Body is bilaterally symmetrical, triploblastic and coelomate.
5. They have a tail behind the anal opening.
6. Closed circulatory system is present. Chordata are divided into five subphyla. The higher
chordata are divided into five classes.
CLASS PISCES
CHARACTERISTICS
1. The body is covered with scales / plates.
2. Body is streamlined.
3. Respiration is through gills.
4. They are cold blood and heart is two chambered.
5. They are oviparous [egg laying]
6. Locomotion by fins.
Ex. Rohu, Seahorse.
FISH
CLASS AMPHIBIA
CHARACTERISTICS
1. They are aquatic as well as terrestrial animals.
2. They are cold blooded and heart is three chambered.
3. Respiration through gills, lungs and buccal cavity.
4. They are oviparous.
5. Presence of penta dectyle limbs for locomotion.
Ex. Frog, Toad
CLASS REPTILIA
CHARACTERISTICS
1. Terrestrial habitat.
2. They respire through lungs.
3. Body is covered by a scaly exoskeleton.
4. They are cold blood and most of them have three chambered heart, while crocodiles
have four chambered heart.
5. They lay eggs that have hard shells.
6. Limbs are pentadactyl.
Ex. Lizard, Crov=codile.
LIZARD
CLASS AVES
CHARACTERISTICS
1. They are warm blooded and have four chambered heart.
2. Body is covered by feathers
3. Arboreal habitat.
4. Respiration through lungs.
5. Possess hollow and light bones.
6. They are oviparous.
Ex. Hen, Pigeon
BIRD
CLASS MAMMALIA
CHARACTERISTICS
1. Warm blooded and have four chambered heart.
2. Respiration through lungs.
3. Body is covered by a hairy exoskeleton.
4. Presence of diaphragm to separate thoracic and abdominal cavities.
5. Mature RBC does not possess a nucleus.
6. Neck consists of seven vertebrae.
7. Most mammals are viviparous.
8. The female mammals have mammary glands to suckle the young ones.
Ex. Cat, Zebra, Kangaroo.
