No.

611-A
Directions For
ORBECO-HELLIGE, INC. AQUA TESTER

The Orbeco-Hellige Aqua Tester No. 611-A contains the following equipment:

• 1 611-A Aqua Tester

• 1 611-IC Instrument Cover/Light Shield
• 1 611-LSC Lamp Socket and Cord
• 1 272 Light Bulb
• 2 611-PL Plunger
• 2 611-T Nessler Tube
• 1 600-PA Magnifying Prism

SETTING UP:

Carefully remove all components from the shipping carton. Screw the bulb firmly into the socket.
Slide the socket into the opening in the side of the housing and tighten the thumbscrew. Lower the
light shield onto the housing, sliding the split pins all the way down into the housing sockets. Insert
the power cord plug into the 110v A.C. three pin socket.

The bulb must be positioned to provide uniform illumination. Fill two clean, dry No. 611-T Nessler
Tubes to the line with clear water and insert a No. 611-PL Plunger into each. Make sure the outside of
the tubes are clean and dry. Open the Aqua Tester back door. Rest the tube bottoms in the circular
depressions in the door base and press them into the spring clips.* Close the door and switch on the
lamp. Loosen the bulb socket thumbscrew. Slide and turn the socket until the two semicircular
images in the prism are of equal brightness. Comparisons should be made in an area that is not well
lit, with your eye centered above the prism at a comfortable distance a few inches above the light
shield. Tighten the thumbscrew. No further adjustment is necessary unless the bulb is replaced.

* NOTE: Newer models of the 611-A are equipped with Tube Holder Plates, not spring clips.
Carefully slide tubes down through the tube holder in plate with door open.

OPERATION:

Prepare the test solution and fill clean, dry Nessler Tubes as instructed in the specific directions
provided with each color disc.

Lift the light shield off the housing and place the center of the required color disc on the exposed ring
with numbers facing upwards. Replace the light shield. As the disc is rotated, numbers representing
color standard values appear in the circular window in the light shield.

Rotate the color disc so that one color standard after another is viewed as the left semicircular image
in the prism and is compared to the image of the treated sample which appears as the right half. The
left side color may also include compensation for any natural color or turbidity which appears in the
sample.

When a color match is obtained, the result is read from the number appearing in the light shield
window. The values of intermediate colors may be estimated.

GENERAL REMARKS:

1. Best comparisons are made in a somewhat darkened room.

2. For extended bulb life, switch off when not in use
3. Outside of Nessler Tubes must be clean and dry when inserted into Aqua Tester.
4. Wash tubes immediately after use. Do not exert any force when washing. Rinse with distilled
water and allow draining dry.
5. The door base assembly, in which the tubes rest, is available as part No. 611-FHC Filter Holder
Complete. Should it become soiled, it can be removed easily by unscrewing two thumbscrews
and lifting the assembly off the screws protruding from the door base. Clean with soap and
water and alcohol. Make sure it is dry before replacing in the housing.
6. Orbeco-Hellige, Inc. Nessler Tubes, Plungers, Indicator Solutions, and Reagents are specially
designed for use with the Orbeco-Hellige, Inc. Aqua Tester. Results cannot be guaranteed if
parts from other manufacturers are used.
7. Viewing too close, too far away, or off-center, may produce a shadow effect. DO NOT VIEW
WITH THE EYE CLOSE TO THE HOUSING OR FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD.
8. The Magnifying Prism No. 611-PA is attached with split pins and can be removed by pulling it
from the light shield.
