PIMSO-SCIENCE ABSTRACT

What is PIMSO?
The Philippine International Math and Science Olympics, PIMSO for brevity, is an
international competition in Mathematics and Science for Kindergarten, six Primary Levels
(Grades 1 to 6), four Secondary Levels (Grades 7 to 10) and one Senior Secondary Level
(Grade 11 & 12). It aims to promote excellence and proficiency in Mathematics and Science
through friendly global competitions and to promote Philippine tourism to other country
partners worldwide.

What are the contents of each competition level in PIMSO – Science?


I. Elementary/Primary Levels (Grades 1 to 6)
The syllabus includes the following subject domains:
a. Biology – animals and plants; human body systems; life stages and development;
adaptations; food chain and food webs; seed dispersion and plant propagation.
b. Chemistry – materials used in everyday life (properties and intended uses);
observable changes in matters; salts; pollution effects; heating and cooling effects on
materials (metals and nonmetals); food and household products.
c. Physics – movement of gears; effects of motion; effects of temperature; electricity
and electrical circuits; sound; and, simple machines.
d. Earth and Environmental Sciences – seasons; direction of shadows; weather and
clouds; rocks; wind, water, and air; food chain and food webs; weathering and
erosion; land forms and water forms.
e. Space Sciences – space phenomenon; phases of the moon; position of starts; solar
system; heavenly bodies; and, meteorology.

II. Secondary Levels

The syllabus includes the following subject domains:


a. Biology – cell organelles; cell transport; cell division; DNA and protein synthesis;
from molecules to organisms; mutations; population genetics; cell respiration;

photosynthesis; ecology; evolution; population genetics; inheritance and variation of


traits; evolution and natural selection; taxonomy; energy and dynamics
b. Chemistry – matter and its properties; measurements; atoms, molecules and ions;
stoichiometry; gas laws; electronic structure of atoms; electronic structure and
periodicity; chemical bonding & ionic bonds; covalent bonds; organic compounds;
intermolecular forces, liquids and gases; physical properties of solution;
thermochemistry; chemical kinetics; chemical thermodynamics; chemical
equilibrium; acid, base, salts equilibria; electrochemistry;
c. Physics - Units and Measurement; Vectors and Projectiles; Kinematics; Newton’s
Laws; Forces in Two Dimensions; Work, Energy and Power; Center of Mass,
Momentum, Impulse and Collisions; Rotational Equilibrium and Rotational
Dynamics; Gravity; Periodic Motion; Mechanical Waves and Sounds; Fluid
Mechanics; Temperature and Heat; Ideal Gases and Laws of Thermodynamics; Static
Electricity; Electric Circuits; Light and Color; Reflection and Mirrors; Refraction and
Lenses
d. Earth and Environmental Sciences - origin and structure of the earth; plate
tectonics; earth materials and processes; natural hazards, mitigation, and adaptation;
history of the earth; geology, minerals and energy; the scientific method; ecology; the
biosphere; climate, hydrosphere and atmosphere; population; the land, forests and
soil; water resources and water pollution; energy and resources; societies and policy;
sustainability and the human endeavor; waste management
e. Space Sciences - formation of the universe; universe; galaxies; the big bang; black
holes; space explorations; solar system; earth moon system; earth in the solar system;
measuring distances in the solar system and beyond; parallax and distance to
asteroids; weather; planetology; comparing planets and stars; cosmic scale and cosmic
address; space geology; space life; and space medicine

What are the guidelines in the administration of the test?


I. National Round
Each participant’s test booklet in the National Round is provided with the following
guidelines for both Primary Levels (Grades 1 to 6) and Secondary Levels (Grade 7 to 10
and Senior Secondary):
1. You have seventy-five (75) minutes to finish the test.
2. This test covers FIVE (5) SUBJECT DOMAINS namely: Biology, Chemistry,
Physics, Earth & Environmental Sciences, and Space Sciences.
3. There is a total of thirty (30) Multiple-Choice Questions in this test. Each
correctly answered question shall be marked five (5) points. No points shall be
deducted for incorrect answers.
4. You must shade properly the ovals that correspond to the letters of your answers
on the ANSWER SHEET.
5. You may draw illustrations or write your solutions on the TEST BOOKLET.
6. You are NOT ALLOWED to use any gadget during the test proper.

7. Any form of cheating is a ground for DISQUALIFICATION.


8. After the test, you must SUBMIT to the proctor both the TEST BOOKLET and
the ANSWER SHEET.

II. International Round


Each participant’s test booklet in the National Round is provided with the following
guidelines for both Primary Levels (Grades 1 to 6) and Secondary Levels (Grade 7 to 10
and Senior Secondary):
1. You have seventy-five (75) minutes to finish the test.
2. This test covers FIVE (5) SUBJECT DOMAINS namely: Biology, Chemistry,
Physics, Earth & Environmental Sciences, and Space Sciences.
3. This test is composed of thirty (30) Multiple-Choice Questions and five (5)
Open-ended Questions. Each correctly answered Multiple-Choice Question will
be marked five (5) points and each Open-ended Question will be marked ten
(10) points. No points shall be deducted for incorrect answers.
4. You must shade properly the ovals that correspond to the letters of your answers
in the Multiple-Choice Questions and write your answers to the Open-ended
Questions on the space provided in the ANSWER SHEET.
5. You may draw illustrations or write your solutions on the TEST BOOKLET.
6. You are NOT ALLOWED to use any gadget during the test proper.
7. Any form of cheating is a ground for DISQUALIFICATION.
8. After the test, you must SUBMIT to the proctor both the TEST BOOKLET and
the ANSWER SHEET.

What are the awards to be given to PIMSO – Science participants?


A. National Round – PIMSO Awards Committee shall recognize the participants in this
manner:
a. Higher 60% of the total number of participants shall qualify to the International
Round and shall be entitled to one of these awards based on their scores:
4 Mistakes or Less (130 points & higher) - Gold Medal
5-7 Mistakes (115 to 125 points) - Silver Medal
8-10 Mistakes (100 to 110 points) - Bronze Medal
Remaining Participants - Achiever Medal
Global Ranking Special Award
Perfect Scorer - Trophy, Free Training
1st Runner Up - Trophy
2nd Runner Up - Trophy

b. Lower 40% of the participants shall receive either of the following:


Upper 50% - Merit Certificate
Lower 50% - Participation Certificate

B. International Round – PIMSO Awards Committee shall recognize and award the
participants based on the following criteria:
4 Mistakes or Less (130 points & higher) - Gold Medal
5-7 Mistakes (115 to 125 points) - Silver Medal
8-10 Mistakes (100 to 110 points) - Bronze Medal
Remaining Participants - Achiever Medal
(Below 100 points)

Special Awards

Champion - Trophy, Free Training


Perfect Scorer - Trophy
1st Runner Up - Trophy
2nd Runner Up - Trophy
All Participants - Philippine Eagle Stuff Toy

When is the schedule of PIMSO – Science competition?


PIMSO shall give its country partners the prerogatives to choose the specific date of
the holding of their respective National Round sometime between between March and July
2022. Results will be posted two (2) weeks after the sitting date.
The International Round is tentatively scheduled on December 2022 (If Online) or
April 22-25, 2023 in Boracay Island, Municipality of Malay in the province of Aklan in the
Philippines.

When is the National Awarding ceremony?


Each country partner shall conduct their respective awarding ceremony within two
months after the competition.

When is the release of the Global Ranking of the National Rounds?


Global ranking shall be available for posting and dissemination not later than August
30, 2022. This shall also be posted in the official PIMSO website.

What shall be done in case of tie in the first three ranks in the International Round?
In dealing with ties in scores in the first three ranks, the PIMSO Test Committee will
break the tie in the following manner:
INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONS IN EDUCATION

1. The scores of the contestants in the National Round shall be compared and
whoever has the higher score shall be declared the winner.
2. Should there still be ties after the first tie-breaking measure, the age of the
concerned participants shall be compared and whoever is younger in months or
years shall be declared the winner.
3. If the tie has not been settled after the second tie-breaking measure, the committee
shall require the concerned participants to undergo a tie-breaking test compose of
five (5) questions and whoever gets a higher score shall be declared the winner.
• The decision of the PIMSO Test Committee shall be final and irreversible.

When is the posting of the official result of the International Round?


Two (2) weeks after the culmination of the International Round, PIMSO will post the
official result of the competition in its website, www.pimso.org.
