Technical Note

The document outlines a project commissioned by Aldar Properties to upgrade two junctions along the E-15 highway in Ghayathi, focusing on improving traffic flow and safety. A Transportation Infrastructure Plan Study (TIP) was conducted to assess the impact of the upgrades, with traffic analysis indicating that both the existing and proposed configurations operate at an acceptable level of service. The report concludes that the proposed roundabout configurations for both junctions can accommodate anticipated peak hour traffic.

1. PROJECT OVERVIEW
Aldar Properties commissioned Otak to upgrade the intersections along the E-15 highway and its surrounding
area in Ghayathi. As a requirement for approval by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of any proposed
road/junction improvement plan within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, there is a need for the completion of
Transportation Infrastructure Plan Study (TIP).

2. STUDY SCOPE
The scope of the study is to assess the impact of upgrading 2 junctions on the E15 highway. The objective of
the study is to improve the design of the junction and to increase the safety of the traffic flow. The study will
aim to assess the proposed/existing junctions and upgraded junctions at these two locations. The traffic
analysis and outcome of the study is presented in this report.

3. STUDY AREA
The project consists of 2 junctions and is located on the E15 highway that passes Ghayathi city in Al Dhafra
Region. The summary of the project area junctions is presented below in Table 1 and the location of the
junctions are shown in Figure 1 to 3.

4. TRAFFIC FLOWS
As agreed with ITC liaison engineer during the TIP inception meeting, the STEAM model outputs were used
to analyze the junctions. The model output flows are presented in Figure 4. The junction types are presented
in below Table 2.

Table 2: Junction Configuration as per STEAM

Peak hour flows were extracted from the STEAM model or all the peak hours and anlysed for the model
configuration and proposed configuration.

5. TRAFFIC ANALYSIS
The traffic analysis for the model junction configuration and the upgraded junctions as roundabouts were
conducted using SIDRA software. The analysis includes the layouts as per the model and proposed
configuration of Junction 1 Area-03 and Junction 2 Area-05. The SIDRA Analysis results have been shown
in below tables Table 3 & Table 4.
The analysis shows that the model junction configuration and upgraded junctions are operating at an
acceptable level of service.
The details of the model and proposed configuration of both junctions and the detailed software outputs
related to intersection summary and movement summary for all the peaks have been presented in Appendix
A.

6. CONCLUSUION
The project includes the scope of upgrading Junction 1 and Junction 2. The analysis result shows that the
model configuration and upgraded junctions are operating at an acceptable level of service and it is
recommended that the proposed configuration of both junctions as roundabouts can accommodate anticipated
traffic during peak hour.
