THE DIPHTHONGS

I. The teacher writes these sentences on the board.


II. The pp. read the sentences and deducing the sound repeated.
III. The teacher writes the symbol of the diphthong; the transcription after each sentence. E.g. 
1. Jane and Kate baked eight cakes.
2. Simon and Mike arrive on time.
3. Roy is a noisy boy.
4. Jones shows his noble nose.
5. Out of the house Mr Brown found a mouse on the ground.
6. Where were Mary’s pearls?
7. At the rear they hear the peer and the jeer.
8. Mr Muir is curious about the tour.
IV. The teacher writes down on the board all the diphthong sound symbols.
V. Copy a word from each of the sentences above.

Some explanations:A diphthong is a one-syllable sound that is made up


of two vowels. In Received Pronunciation English there are eight diphthongs
 sounds.
