Class: VI Notes of Topic/Lesson: Electricity and Circuits Year:2022-2023

Answer the following questions:

Q.1 Define conductors. Give three uses of conductors.

Ans:1 The materials that allow electric current to pass through them are known as
conductors. The three uses are:

a. Filament in bulb is made of tungsten which is a conductor of electricity.

b. Electric wires are made of conductors like copper and aluminium.
c. Switches, electric plugs and sockets are made of conductors.

Q.2 What is an electric circuit?

Ans:2. The electric circuit is an arrangement that provides a complete path for electricity to
pass (current to flow) between the two terminals of the electric cell. The bulb glows only
when current flows through the circuit. In an electric circuit, the direction of current is taken
to be from the positive to the negative terminal of the electric cell

Q.3 A fused bulb does not glow. Why?

Ans:3 A bulb may fuse if the filament breaks. A break in filament means gap in electric
circuit. Hence fused bulb will not glow.

Q.4 Why should we never join the terminals of a cell directly with each other?

Ans:4 We should never join the two terminals of the cell without connecting them through a
switch or a device like bulb. If we do so, the chemicals in the electric cell get used up very
fast and the cell stops working.

Q.5 As a safety measure you are advised to wear rubber slippers or shoes when handling
electrical appliances. Give reasons?

Ans: 5 Human body is a conductor of electricity. If we touch the electric wires with our bare
hands, we will get a shock. Slippers and shoes are made of insulators which prevents us from
getting a shock.

Q.6 Write a note on electric cell.

Ans:6 An electric cell has a metal cap at one end and a metal disc at the other end. The metal
cap is the positive terminal of the cell and the metal disc is the negative terminal of the cell.
An electric cell produces electricity from the chemicals stored in it.

Q.7 How can we make a simple torch?

Ans: 7 a. Take a bulb, a wire and a cell.

b. Place the metal tip of the bulb on the positive terminal of the cell.

c. Connect the negative terminal of the cell to the base of the bulb with wire. Now the
torch is ready to work.

Q.8 What is the purpose of using an electric switch? Name some electrical gadgets that have
switches built into them.

Ans: 8 The purpose of electric switch is to complete or break the circuit. Electrical gadgets
that have switches built into them are fan, refrigerator, television, microwave oven, electric
cookers, etc.

Q.9 Draw a neat and labelled diagram of a bulb.
