Last Sunday at the beach
We had a terrible day last Sunday. On Sunday morning, I decided to take my family to the beach
and my wife prepared our picnic in two baskets. We arrived at the beach at eleven o’clock, but
the sea was low – it was impossible to swim. We decided to play football, but I kicked the ball
into the road under a bus. The bus squashed the ball. Then we opened our picnic basket…but
there wasn’t any food in it: only some plates and knives and forks. “Where’s the other basket?”
my wife asked. “The other basket? Were there two baskets?” I asked. My wife just looked at me
sadly. The children started to cry. “Yes, there were” she answered quietly.

What is the environment?
The environment is everything around us. I am talking about the air, water and land in which
people, animals and plants live. Why is the environment important for us? What we eat or
breath comes from the environment; that is why we should protect it. For example, you should
protect animals in danger of extinction, avoid cutting trees and burning bushes, you shouldn’t
pollute the air or water, etc. if you do these things, the environment will thank you…
Which animals are in danger of extinction? Dogs, for instance, are they in danger? Well,
animals in danger of extinction are animals of which only a few exist. The number of these
animals is very small. So, the world is protecting them so that nobody kills them. These animals
include, for example, the marine turtle, the white tiger, the dolphin, the dugong, the white goat,
the whale, the kangaroo and the penguin. What happens if you kill these animals? The
Mozambican government will punish people who don’t obey these protection laws. These laws
vary from imprisonment to heavy fines. Last month we caught ten people who were stealing
turtle eggs. They will be spending the next four years in prison…

The 21st century illiterates
When we talk about illiteracy we automatically think of someone who can read or write. But
nowadays there is a new kind of illiterates: computer illiterates. Some people can write and read
in many languages but they cannot use computer or a word processor programme, which to a
certain level can be considered as a basic skill for a computer user.

The history of computer in the twentieth century is one of dramatic use and expansion. The
computer was first used in some very specific areas as a specialist tool. The first electronic
computer was built in 1930s and was solely for the use of undergraduate students in Lowa state
University to handle mathematical computations in nuclear physics. During the Second World
War, two computers were developed in order to wage counter espionage and break codes used by
enemy. The computer has changed the number and quality of daily experiences and tasks.
Virtual reality is a space simulated by computers with three dimensional video and sound. Here
we can safely practice what could be potentially dangerous if done in the real world, for instance,
medical surgery treatments. High school students can make use of this kind of simulation
software to understand abstract theories in near real life experiences.
