Expt 3

The experiment aims to calculate boundary coverage probability in a cellular system using a fading channel through a virtual lab. It discusses the significance of shadow fading in determining the probability of signal strength exceeding a threshold and outlines the procedure for conducting the experiment. The conclusion confirms the successful execution of the experiment and the calculation of the boundary coverage probability.

AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT :-

To calculate boundary coverage probability y in a cellular system using fading
channel mobile communication Virtual lab .
APPARATUS REQUIRED :-
1. Personal computer .
2. Website : www.vlab.co.in
THEORY :-
The circular coverage region of a Base Station is the area defined by a certain
radius R with the Base Station at the center where the mean signal level received at
the mobile unit remains above a specified threshold with certain probability. The
probability mentioned above is decided based on quality of service requirement. If
there is no shadow fading then the radius R can be calculated for a region where the
signal level crosses the threshold with certainty.
However in real conditions, shadow fading plays an important role in cellular
network design. Due to the random variation of the signal strength received owing
to shadow fade, one needs to find the probability with which received signal
strength crosses the predicted threshold.

1. % Boundary Coverage:-
The received signal power in log domain at a distance d from the Base
Station is given by:
𝑑
𝑃𝑟 (𝑑 ) = 𝑃𝑟 (𝑑0 ) + log ( 0) + 𝑥𝑑𝐵
𝑑
2. % Area Coverage:-
The % area coverage is determined by the radius Ry at which the signal
level exceeds the sensitivity level with probability Prob Ry which is the likelihood of
coverage at the cell boundary with d=Ry

𝑃𝑟𝑜𝑏𝑅𝑦 = 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑏[𝑃𝑟 (𝑅𝑦 ) > 𝑦]

Given that [𝑃𝑟 (𝑑 ) > ϓ](𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑏𝑑ϓ ) is the probability that the signal the range
0 < d< Rϓ exceeds the sensitivity level we can associates this with the probabilty that
the level exceeds ϓ with in an infinite signal area dA at the range d.
