Act III
Critical Thinking Questions
1. Edmund was an evil traitor. Explain.
He plotted against his brother, Edgar, which made their father angry with Edgar. He told Cornwall
and Regan that his father was a spy to the French King.
3. "I'm sorry, Cornwall, because the truth is so sad." Who is the speaker? Why does the speaker
mean?
Edmund says this to Cornwall. He wants to show Cornwall a letter that proves that Gloucester is a
spy.
4. "I trust you, Edmund, and you'll find me to be a better father than he is." Who is the
speaker? Why does the speaker say this?
Cornwall says this to Edmund because he thinks his father Gloucester is a traitor. Of course, he is
wrong to trust Edmund.
5. If you were Cornwall, would you trust Edmund after betraying his father?
No, I wouldn't. He could betray me just as he did to his father.
6. "The poor King! His children have done to him what my father has done to me!" Who is the
speaker? Why does the speaker say this?
Edgar says this to himself when Kent starts to take the King to Dover. He realises that the King's
daughters are as cruel to Lear as Gloucester has been to him.
9. Do you think Gloucester deserved what happened to him? Why/ Why not?
No, he didn't deserve it. He did what was right and honest. He only tried to help the king.
10. What do you think Edmund, Goneril and Regan have in common?
They are not loyal to their fathers.
time4english-edu.info 44 | Page
12. What reward did Edmund get for plotting against his father?
Cornwall promised Edmund that he would become the new Duke of Gloucester instead of his father.
20. Why did the servant fight Cornwall? What was the result?
I think he sympathised with Gloucester and wanted to defend him. The servant badly wounded
Cornwall.
22. Why did Regan take a sword and kill the servant herself?
I think she loved her husband and wanted to defend him.
23. "Edmund told us that you betrayed us. He will not help you." Who is the speaker? Why does
the speaker say this?
Regan says this to Gloucester when he asks Edmund to help him.
24. What did Gloucester realise when Regan told him what Edmund had done?
He realised that he had been tricked by Edmund and that he should have trusted his elder, son Edgar.

Act IV
Critical Thinking Questions
1. "When you have nothing, there's nothing left to lose." What do you think Edgar means?
I think he means that a person who has lost everything is so desperate that he is ready to do anything.
2. "I don't need any eyes. When I had eyes, I couldn't see what I most needed to see." Why do you
think Gloucester says this?
Gloucester says this because he realises that he could not see that Edgar was a good son.
3. The Duke of Gloucester was the victim of his loyalty and trust in his son. Explain.
Edmund plotted against his elder brother Edgar and his father. Gloucester's loyalty to King Lear
made Cornwall hit him on the face with his sword, which made him go blind.
4. "There is a very high cliff in Dover. Take me to the top of it. You don't need to take me
anywhere else." What is Gloucester planning to do?
Gloucester wants Edgar to take him to the cliff, and he is planning to jump off.
5. "Edmund, Duke of Gloucester, is hungry for power. Perhaps I should use him to help me."
What does this show about Goneril's character?
This shows that she is a greedy person who uses people, whoever they are, to get what she wants.
6. What kind of wife was Goneril? How do you know?
She was unfaithful. She wanted Edmund to kill her husband.
7. Goneril was neither a loving daughter nor a good wife. Explain.
She was cruel to her old father and plotted against him. Her husband, Albany, was afraid of her. He
thought that she was an evil woman.
8. "You and Regan are tigers, not daughters." Do you think the word 'tigers' really describes the
two sisters? Why?
Yes, I think so because they are evil and cruel.
9. "Look at yourself, Goneril! Evil hides inside you." Was Albany right to say this? Why/Why not?
Yes, he was. Goneril was evil. She lied to her father saying she loved him very much. After he had
given her half of his kingdom, she was so ungrateful that she plotted against him.
10. "He does not want to see his daughter….because he was so unkind to her before." Who is Kent
talking about? Why do you think the King is regretful?
He is talking about Lear and Cordelia. I think the King really regrets the decisions he has made
against his daughter because he finally realises that Cordelia is the one who really loves him the
most, but he has been unkind to her.
11. Do you think that Gloucester still believes his son Edgar has been cruel to him? Why?
No, I don't think so. He wishes he would get his eyes back so that he may see Edgar and hold him.
12. What does Edgar wish he didn't have to pretend to be?
He wishes he didn't have to pretend to be Poor Tom. He wishes to tell Gloucester that he is his own
son.
13. Of the three daughters of King Lear, only Cordelia loved him. How do you know?
Cordelia wasn't angry with her father when he punished her and sent her off. She felt sorry for him
that he had been treated badly by her sisters. She came back with a French army to help him.
time4english-edu.info 46 | Page
14. Why do you think Gloucester wanted to commit suicide?
Because he was shocked by what his son Edmund had done to him. He was also sad that he became
blind.
16. "They pretended to be kind to me and told me how wise I was. But when the rain and wind
came and the lightning wouldn't stop, I learnt the truth."
a- Who does the speaker refer to?
He refers to his two daughters Goneril and Regan.
b- What truth did Lear learn?
He learnt that Goneril and Regan were liars and that they deceived him to take his land and power.
17. "If I read about this in a story, I wouldn't believe it was true. It is so sad." Why do you think
Edgar says this?
Because he sees that the King has gone mad and Gloucester has gone blind.
18. "But you can see with your ears. We now know that a judge will punish a poor man's crime
before a rich man's crime." What do you think King Lear meant by these words?
He meant that he lived in a world full of injustice.
19. Why do you think Edgar says that King Lear is talking both 'sense and nonsense'?
Because some of the King's words are rational and logical, while others aren't.
20. "Look, here's the prize! This man without eyes will make me rich!" What do you think
Oswald meant by this?
He meant that he found Gloucester. He was going to kill Gloucester to be rewarded by Regan.
21. I want to die. I hope you're strong enough to do it." Do you think Gloucester was threatening
Oswald by these words? Explain your answer.
No, he wasn't. He meant it. He was really desperate and he wanted to die.
22. "Please, doctor, try to cure my father, whose children have made him mad." To what extent is
that true? Explain.
This is completely true. Goneril and Regan, Lear's daughters, took his kingdom and plotted against
him. Only Cordelia supported him.
23. "Lady. I'm a very foolish old man." How far do you agree with what Lear says?
Yes, I agree. Lear was tricked by false love words from Goneril and Regan. He couldn't sense the
true love in Cordelia's behaviour. Now, he is the victim of his foolishness.

Act V
Critical Thinking Questions
1. Why do you think Regan doesn't want Goneril to talk to Edmund?
She is worried that Edmund will help her sister and not her.
2. "I think we have been too cruel to the King." What does this tell us about the speaker?
We learn that Albany is a good man who is sorry for what has happened to King Lear.
3. Do you think Albany trusts Edmund? Why?
No, I don't think so. Edmund is a selfish person who is hungry for power at the expense of anything
or anybody.
4. 'I've told both sisters that I'll help them to win more power." What does this tell us about
Edmund?
It tells us that he is an opportunist and a dishonest person. He is not to be trusted.
5. "This is a bitter pill to swallow." When does Edgar say this?
He says this when he knows that King Lear has lost the battle and that Lear and Cordelia are now
prisoners.
6. Why do you think Edmund sent Lear to prison?
Because he thinks that the soldiers will feel sorry for him and might want to support him.
7. "I see kind Edmund as an equal. He led our soldiers well today in battle. I think he can call
himself equal to you." What does this tell us about Regan?
It tells us that she is ready to use Edmund to try to take power from Goneril and Albany.
8. Why do you think Edmund says, "The wheel has come full circle."?
Because he believes he started with no power, then rose to power and then lost it.
9. How did you feel at the end of the play? Why?
I felt sorry for the good people who were killed, especially Cordelia. I don't think it was a fair end
for such a loving daughter.
10. Who is your favourite character in the play? Why?
My favourie character is Cordelia. She was a loving daughter who sacrificed her life to save her
father.
11. Who is your most hateful character in the play? Why?
Edmund is my most hateful character. His hunger for power turned him into a traitor who plotted
against his brother and his father and whoever was in his way.
12. Did you expect such a dramatic end to the play? Why / Why not?
Yes. Greed, hunger for power, treason and cruelty must lead to such a tragic end.
13. What message do you think this final part of the play gives us?
Sooner or later, everybody will pay for the evil they do.
14. Personally, what moral lessons did you get from 'King Lear'?
Personally, I learnt that deeds speak louder than words and that, sooner or later, everybody will pay
for the evil they do.

Passage 1:
Read the following passage, then answer the questions below:
"Click!" That's the sound of safety. That's the sound of survival. That's the sound of a seat belt
locking in place. Seat belts save lives and that's a fact. That's why I don't drive anywhere until mine is
on tight. Choosing to wear your seat belt is as simple as choosing between life and death. Which one
do you choose?
Think about it. When you're driving in a car, you may be moving at 60 MPH or faster. That car is
zipping down the road. Then somebody ahead of you locks up their brakes. Your driver doesn't have
time to stop. The car that you are in crashes. Your car was going 60 miles per hour. Now, it has
suddenly stopped. Your body, however, is still moving at 60 MPH. What's going to stop your body?
Will it be the windshield or your seat belt? Every time that you get into a car you make that choice.
I choose the seat belt.
Some people think that seat belts are uncool. They think that they cramp their style, or that they are
uncomfortable. To them I say, what's more uncomfortable? Wearing a seat belt or flying through a car
windshield? What's more uncool? Being safely anchored to a car, or skidding across the road in your
jean? Wearing a seat belt is both cooler and more comfortable than other alternatives.
Let's just take a closer look at your choices. If you are not wearing your seat belt, you can hop
around the car and slide in and out of your seat easily. That sounds like a lot of fun. But, you are also
more likely to die or suffer serious injuries. If you are wearing a seat belt, you have to stay in your seat.
That's no fun. But, you are much more likely to walk away unharmed from a car accident.
Hmmm....... A small pleasure or a serious pain? That's a tough choice. I think that I'll avoid the serious
pain.
How about giving money away? Do you like to give your money away? Probably not. And when you
don't wear your seat belt, you are begging to give your money away. That's because kids are required
to wear seat belts in every state in America. If you're riding in a car, and you don't have a seat belt on,
the police can give you or your driver a ticket. Then you will have to give money to the city. I'd rather
keep my money, but you can spend yours the way you want.
Wearing a seat belt does not make you invincible. You can still get hurt or killed while wearing your
seat belt. But wearing them has proved to be safer than driving without them. You are much less likely
to be killed in a car wreck if you are wearing a seat belt. You are much less likely to get seriously
injured if you are wearing one. So why not take the safer way? Why not go the way that has been
proved to result in fewer deaths? You do want to live, don't you?

Passage 2:
Read the following passage, then answer the questions below:
When you imagine the desert, you probably think of a very hot place covered with sand. Although
this is a good description for many deserts, Earth's largest desert is actually a very cold place covered
In order for an area to be considered a desert, it must receive very little rainfall. More specifically, it
must receive an average of less than ten inches of precipitation – which can be rain, sleet, hail, or
snow – on the ground every year. Antarctica, the coldest place on earth, has an average temperature
that usually falls below the freezing point. And because cold air holds less moisture than warm air, the
air in Antarctica does not hold much moisture at all. This is evident in the low precipitation statistics
recorded for Antarctica. For example, the central part of Antarctica receives an average of less than 2
inches of snow every year. The coastline of Antarctica receives a little bit more – between seven and
eight inches a year. Because Antarctica gets so little precipitation every year, it is considered a desert.
When precipitation falls in hot deserts, it quickly evaporates back into the atmosphere. The air over
Antarctica is too cold to hold water vapour, so there is very little evaporation. Due to this low rate of
evaporation, most of the snow that falls to the ground remains there permanently, eventually building
up into thick ice sheets. Any snow that does not freeze into ice sheets becomes caught up in the
strong winds that constantly blow over Antarctica. These snow-filled winds can make it look as if it is
snowing. Even though snowfall is very rare there, blizzards are actually very common on Antarctica.

3. Africa's Sahara Desert is the second-largest desert on earth. Based on the information in the passage,
what characteristic must the Sahara share with Antarctica?
a. low temperatures b. high temperatures
c. frequent blizzards d. low precipitation
5. In paragraph 2, the author states, "And because cold air holds less moisture than warm air, the air in
Antarctica does not hold much moisture at all." Using this information, we can conclude that:
a. The air in Africa holds more moisture than the air in Antarctica.
b. The air surrounding a tropical island holds less moisture than the air in Antarctica.
c. The air in the second floor of a house is typically warmer than the air on the first floor.
d. The air in mountain areas is typically hotter than the air in coastal areas.
6. Even though snowfall is very rare there, blizzards are actually very common on Antarctica.
What does the above sentence show?
a. Cause And Effect b. Further description
c. Logical Interpretation d. Contradiction
7. Based on the information in the final paragraph, it can be understood that blizzards in Antarctica are
mainly the result of.............
a. freezing cold temperatures b. large amounts of snowfall
c. low amounts of precipitation d. strong winds

Passage 3:
Read the following passage, then answer the questions below:
When we are young, we learn that tigers and sharks are dangerous animals. We might be scared of
them because they are big and powerful. As we get older, however, we learn that sometimes the most
dangerous animals are also the smallest ones. In fact, the animal that kills the most people every year
is one that you have probably killed many times yourself: the mosquito.
While it may seem that all mosquitoes are biters, this is not actually the case. Male mosquitoes eat
plant nectar. On the other hand, female mosquitoes feed on animal blood. They need this blood to live
and produce eggs. When a female mosquito bites a human being, it transmits a small amount of saliva
into the blood. This saliva may or may not contain a deadly disease. The result of the bite can be as
minor as an itchy bump or as serious as death.
Because a mosquito can bite many people in the course of its life, it can carry diseases from one
person to another very easily. Two of the most deadly diseases carried by mosquitoes are malaria and
yellow fever. More than 700 million people become sick from such diseases every year. Of these, at
least 2 million die.
Many scientists are working on safer and better ways to kill mosquitoes, but so far, there is no sure
way to protect everyone in the world from their deadly bites. Mosquito nets can be placed over beds to
protect people against being bitten. These nets help people stay safe at night, but they do not kill any
mosquitoes. Mosquitoes have many natural enemies like bats, birds, dragonflies, and certain kinds of
fish. Bringing more of these animals into places where mosquitoes live might help to cut down the
number of mosquitoes in that area. This is a natural solution, but it does not always work very well.
Mosquitoes can also be killed with poisons or sprays. Even though these sprays kill mosquitoes, they
may also harm other plants or animals.
Although mosquitoes may not seem as scary as larger, more powerful animals, they are far more
dangerous to human beings. But things are changing. It is highly likely that one day scientists will find
a way to keep everyone safe from mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.
1. According to the author, some people are more afraid of tigers and sharks than mosquitoes because
tigers and sharks ................ .
a. kill more people than mosquitoes b. are bigger and more powerful
c. are found all over the world d. have no natural enemies

3. In paragraph 2, the author writes, "This saliva may or may not contain a deadly disease." The purpose
of this statement is to ....................
a. oppose a previous argument b. question an upcoming conclusion
c. confirm a previous suggestion d. support a later conclusion
6. Which of the following best describes the author's overall attitude towards the prospect of solving the
mosquito problem?
a. hopeless and dejected b. extremely irritated and annoyed

Protecting the Nile from pollution
Why is River Nile very important to Egypt and the Egyptian people? It has always
been said that Egypt is the gift of the Nile. That’s because River Nile has been the source of
life in Egypt. Without the Nile water, Egypt would be no more than a barren desert. The
Nile provides us with fresh water to drink. We irrigate our fields with its water. From the
Nile, we get fish. On its surface, we go on Nile cruises with our families and friends.
However, we are not so kind to the Nile. The Nile water has become polluted. Some
factories dump their waste into it. Some careless people throw dead animals and rubbish into
its water. Some boats throw their waste there. It has become dangerous to drink water from
the Nile.
Keeping the Nile clean is a matter of life or death. We must stop polluting it. All
factories that pollute the Nile should be fined or even closed. In addition, people who throw
litter into the Nile should be punished. To sum up, the Nile should be protected from all
forms of pollution. Without the Nile water, there would be no life in Egypt.

Modern technology has pros and cons
There’s no shadow of doubt that our life today is quite different from life fifty years
ago. Life in the past was very simple and easy. In the past, people used animals to go
from place to place. People died of many diseases which they could not cure. Today,
thanks to modern science and technology, there are several inventions which have made
Modern means of transport help us to travel long distances in a very short time.
One can take a plane or a private jet and roam the world in a few hours. Moreover, the
progress in the field of medicine has enabled us to find a cure for most diseases. Day
after day, scientists develop new treatments for all diseases which have long been
the most remarkable downside of modern life. It is very harmful to man's life and can
cause fatal diseases. Furthermore, man now depends too much on machines. A lot of
factories have been computerized. Accordingly, a lot of workers lose their jobs. This
leads to unemployment. As a result, many people nowadays suffer from stress and
worry, in addition to other serious problems, including poverty and the spread of crime.

Rules and Laws are a prerequisite of a peaceful life.
It's a fact beyond denial that rules and laws are indispensable in life.
When people are playing a game, they need to follow the rules. If they don't,
the game becomes disorganized and unfair. If a student ignores a rule against
talking in class, the other students can't concentrate. Drivers who don't follow
traffic laws can cause serious accidents.

The Role youth can play in serving our country
There is no doubt that the youth play a crucial role in the progress
and development of any society. A youth is any person between the age of 15
years and 30 years. The youth are the backbone of the society and hence they
determine the future of our country. They are the fuel which pushes the
society forward. This is because all other age groups: kids, teenagers, middle-
aged and elderly people rely on the youth and expect a lot from them.
Accordingly, the youth have a great role to play because the future of our
country lies in their hands.
The role of the youth is simply to maintain the stability and welfare
of the society and drive it forward towards progress and advancement. As the
middle-aged and the senior citizens grow older, many employment posts fall
vacant. These have to be filled by the youth. They are expected to bring in
new skills and show their talents for more productivity. In this way, the
country will flourish in terms of economic and social development.
Thus, due care must be given to exploiting the useful energy of the
youth for the good of the society. They should be given the chance to make
good use of their spare time. Consequently, the government should set up
youth centres for them to practise their hobbies and sports. In addition, the
state should direct the youth towards taking part in industrial and
environmental projects. In conclusion, the youth are a renewable energy that
must be exploited in developing our society.

Environmental Pollution
It’s a fact beyond denial that environmental pollution has increased at a
terrible speed recently. Pollution rates have exceeded all limits, threatening
human existence on Earth, as well as all forms of biological life. Although
pollution has accompanied mankind for a long time, it was not a serious
problem at primitive times. Rapid advancement of technology and
industrialization has brought along with it many undesirable results. Humanity
today is threatened by the dangers of air, water, land and noise pollution.
Statistics show that the air that we breathe is heavily polluted with toxic
gases, chemicals and dust coming from factories and vehicles. Outdoor burning
of garbage and forest fires has also contributed to air pollution. They cause eye
diseases and respiratory problems. Owing to the burning of fossil fuels, the
level of carbon monoxide will increase causing the Earth's temperature to rise.
The heat will melt the polar caps, thus raising the sea level and causing massive
floods around the world. It also produces acid rain, which has a destructive
effect on water, forest, soil and is also harmful to our health.
Accordingly, environmental conservation is a duty that everybody must
share. People should spare no effort to protect their environment from
pollution. We mustn’t dump our rubbish into streets. There must be landfill
sites where this rubbish can be collected. Recycling is also a good way to make
use of the rubbish we get rid of, instead of just burning it. We can produce
recycled bottles, cans and paper. These recycled products are often sold at low
prices. Another way of keeping our environment clean is to build factories and
workshops in the outskirts, away from inhabited areas. In addition, laws must
also be passed to ban driving badly maintained cars that release a lot of
harmful smoke. Factories which dump their wastes into rivers and seas must be
closed, together with those which cause environmental pollution. Last, but not
least, planting trees and green areas can help protect the environment from
pollution. They take in the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and give out pure
oxygen. In conclusion, environmental conservation is our only and last hope
for a safe and healthy life on our planet.

Obesity
It’s a fact beyond denial that obesity is one of the greatest health
challenges of the 21st century. It is scientifically defined as a condition that is
associated with having an excess amount of body fat, owing to genetic and
environmental factors that are difficult to control. In addition to causing
various physical disabilities and psychological problems, obesity drastically
increases a person's risk of developing a number of diseases, including heart
disease, cancer and diabetes.
Science shows that genetics plays a major role in obesity. Genes can
cause certain disorders which result in obesity. However, research is already
underway to determine which genes contribute most to obesity. People
suffering from obesity are advised to go on a strict healthy diet and do
exercise to get rid of excess weight. In a nutshell, it is not impossible to
control obesity, providing that proper awareness campaigns are launched to
draw people’s attention to the multiple hazards it might involve.

Social Networking
It’s a fact beyond denial that social networking is very popular these days
and has a great influence on many people. There’s a great controversy about
social networking which has emerged all over the world. A lot of people are in
favour of it, while others are against it. On the one hand, social media is very
advantageous. It helps people keep in touch with their relatives and friends. It’s
a perfect way of expressing ourselves on the internet. In this aspect, it has
helped people get over the obstacles of time and distance.
On the other hand, social networking has some negative sides. To name
just a few, it can take up too much of our time and hold us back from other
important activities. Besides, psychologists see that it causes people to develop
an introvert attitude towards life. They argue that a lot of people use social
networking as their only form of communication and getting information, rather
than take part in social interaction activities. To sum up, social networking has
various positive and negative impacts on social life, depending on the person
using it.

Distance Learning
Distance learning is a system of education for learners who may not always be
physically present at a school. This system connects learners with educational sources. It
allows them to learn remotely without being in regular face-to-face contact with a
teacher in a classroom. Instead, learners work on their own at home and communicate
with their teachers and also other learners via e-mail and other forms of
communication.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to distance learning. On the one
hand, learners can learn from the comfort of their own homes. They don’t have to
attend formal lessons and lectures. This makes learning easier. It also helps save a lot of
time and effort. A learner can manage his own time and make his own timetable. This is
ideally suited for full-time employees, who are too busy at work to have the chance to
go to university.
Distance learning is also convenient for students who may be unable to attend
classes due to illness and housewives who are overburdened with housework. They just
want to do their studies at home. Furthermore, distance learning is an ideal solution at
times of crises or outbreaks of fatal disease, such as coronavirus. In this aspect, distance
learning is available every time and everywhere.
On the other hand, distance learning may have drawbacks for some learners.
Online learning depends on the internet connection. If a learner can’t gain access to the
internet, the learning process fails. Another downside is that it is a slow process because
it is done by e-mail messages and other internet communication tools. In this way, it
may take more time than face to face learning. Last, but not least, there are students
who are in favour of the traditional student-teacher method of teaching. These students
cannot progress unless they have a teacher by their side. In a nutshell, distance learning
is a good replacement to traditional formal schooling, whatever drawbacks it might
have.

However, they are a mixed blessing. On the one hand, you can go
around the world in minutes; you needn't go by air or by sea. You just
stay at home and dial somebody's number. When you feel like saying
"hello" to someone you miss so much or someone dear to your heart,
only what is needed is a simple touch of your phone number buttons,
dialling their number, calling them or sending them a message.
It goes without saying that women are an integral part of society. They can
play a significant role in the development of any country as well as in human
progress. Throughout history, the pivotal role of women in society has ensured the
stability, progress and development of nations. In this aspect, women are not at all
inferior to men. They are capable of sharing all the responsibilities of life. Man and
woman have been rightly compared to the wheels of the same carriage. In other
words, no nation can rise to the height of glory unless its women are side by side
with men.
Women have a great potential to progress our nation. God has bestowed
them with all capabilities that enable them to play indispensable roles in any aspect
of life whether it is social, economic, political, cultural or educational. We need to
utilize their powers in the right way. All religions have highlighted the importance
of women and granted them a very dignified position equal to man. As a mother,
woman’s role is unique. She brings up children with extreme care. It is quite true
that great men had great mothers. Napoleon said: “Give me good mothers and I
will give you a great nation.” In this way, the progress of nations depends on the
way mothers bring up their children. If the mothers are educated, the whole
society will progress.
Over the ages, women have worked side by side with men. In battlefields,
they nursed the injured and, in certain cases, even fought bravely. In modern age,
women have been great poets, writers, reformers, scientists and educators.
Nowadays, there’s hardly any profession which is still male-dominated. In brief,
women now stand on equal footing with men and shoulder great responsibilities in
developing not only national societies, but human progress and civilization as well.
Over the past few decades, international community has been working
hard towards combating terrorism. World countries are joining efforts to
stand up to this severe merciless enemy. Putting an end to terrorism cannot
be achieved only through force. Instead, governments must work out
solutions to religious conflicts as well as political and social problems faced by
their societies. Domestically, our society must iron out social problems,
especially unemployment. Moreover, we must pay a greater care to
education. It is no use filling the minds of students with futile theories that
serve no real purpose. A good student makes a good citizen who is able to
combat terrorism.
Most crucial still is the fact that all social sects must realize the
importance of dialogue and negotiation. In this way, all disagreements can be
settled without resorting to violence. Last but not least, citizens must also be
aware of the drastic effects of terrorism on society. In this way, they can take
part in combating it. Therefore, the government must hold campaigns to
raise people’s awareness. To sum up, eliminating terrorism will certainly lead
to a prosperous society.
For all this and more, it’s our duty to support these charities in all
possible ways. We can donate money, clothes and medicines to help them
carry out their humanitarian mission. It’s a call for all youth to devote part of
their time for charity work in their cities and neighbourhoods to lessen
people’s sufferings. In a nutshell, charities are a good way to promote social
solidarity among people. They play an influential role, not only helping
people in the same country, but also offering valuable services to poor
people all over the world.
A faithful friend is a person you can always count on when you face
challenges and serious problems. Your friend always listens to your problems,
gives you good advice, and never talks behind your back. He is never envious of
your achievements. This person respects you and keeps your secrets. He is there
for you in times of need. He makes you smile when you forget how to, and lifts
you up when you fall. True friends are always ready to protect each other from
being emotionally hurt. It takes time and patience to build a strong friendship
and achieve trust between two friends. It is very important to have somebody
with whom you can share your thoughts freely.
First, a good leader must be strong. Character strength has its roots
in the leader’s personality. This is connected with genetics. It’s something
that a person is born with. This strength will be positive if the leader has
good qualifications. Leaders who are well-educated and skilful are likely
to succeed. Another personal quality of a good leader is flexibility. To
achieve success, a leader must be able to adapt to different situations. To
lead well, one must know when to be strict and when it’s better to be
flexible.

Subject: an exciting experience
Dear Heba,
How are you? I hope that you and your family are all well. It has been a
long time since I we last met, so I am very happy to write to you now. I’d like
to tell you about an exciting experience I have recently had. You know I have
been to Hurghada so recently. During that holiday, I went on a safari trip
across the mountains with my family. We started the trip with a group of
tourists who were visiting Egypt for the first time. I thought the trip would
make my day. Our guide took us in three vehicles into the mountains.
Unluckily, our vehicle broke down and the guide had to go with the two
other vehicles to get help. The guide was very late and it got dark. It seemed
that we were in a tight corner. We thought that we would soon die or fall easy
prey to wild animals. Suddenly, one of the tourists managed to start our car
and said he could drive well, but he didn’t know the way back.
I asked everyone to keep their cool. As I had studied about the stars at
school, I was able to guide the group, using our map and the location of the
stars. Eventually, we arrived at the hotel and found out that all police officers
in the city were searching for us.
Yours,
Nour
