II. INTRODUCTION
Meet Shelby:
Global Soccer Development has been successful not only by the collective knowledge experience and dedication of their
Staff, but by the wonderful parents who trust and believe in our Methodology and who unselfishly offer their assistance
whenever possible. Shelby is one of those people we could count on, rain or shine. With many trips under her belt with
us, she created a comprehensive packing list for summer and winter Programs. In honor of her many years with GFL and
now GSD, we welcome and share with you: “SHELBY”S PACKING LIST”.
III. CRITICAL ITEMS TO REMEMBER
• Call your bank and let them know when and where you are traveling
• Call your credit card company and let them know when and where you are traveling
• Call phone Carrier to determine best travel plan
• Make two (2) copies of your passport, visa and credit cards you plan to take. Leave one set with your
emergency Contact; put the other in a secure place that is separate from where you are carrying the
originals.

IV. Packing List
Packing three (3) bags – 1 Personal Item, 1 Carry-on and 1 Checked Bag. The airline allows one Carry-on (1 luggage
for overhead bin and 1 personal item) and one checked (see carrier for luggage restrictions and
costs). See below for packing lists for each.
A. Carry-on Personal Item - Soccer bag
Your personal item must be smaller than your carry-on luggage (like a purse, back pack, briefcase or laptop
bag) and fit under the seat in front of you. Personal item is where you keep everything you may need on hand
during flight.
1. Airline Tickets (if you have e-tickets, print out the e-mail confirmation)
2. US Passport, VISA (in required) and ID
3. Other Personal Documents:
• Copy of your passport and other travel documents. This is good to have as backups. Store one in your hotel
safe and carry one on your person.
• Travel Itinerary
4. Copy of the front and back of credit cards with you.
This is good in case lost/ stolen. Store one in your hotel safe upon arrival.
5. Important phone numbers at home, in case you lose your phone
6. Info to Contact to American Embassy in the event of an emergency
7. Copy of Health Insurance Card
8. Wallet/Coin purse – since 1 and 2 dollar Euros are coins.
They will end up with a lot of these so it is helpful to have one of these. I got one at the dollar store.
9. Some cash (in Euro) or traveler checks.
I do not carry much there. 100 in Euros is plenty. There are ATM machines at the airport and it is cheaper to
withdraw from the ATM than to convert Euros at the airport.
10. Electronic Devices:
• Cell Phone and Charger
• Tablet and charger
• Computer (if you have one) and charger
• Headphones / earbuds
• Extra Power Brick for Devices
11. Water Bottle.
I got this one before the last trip. It is filtered AND insulated (which is hard to find).

Super helpful to have on hand and be able to fill up form a tap and drink anywhere. My understanding is that in
Rome the water is good and you can fill up with tap water as it is safe to drink). Also, you can fill from the water
fountains we have all over Rome (not the monumental fountains, the drinking fountains.)

12. Compression socks.
I highly recommend this!! My boys and I put these on as soon as we get on the plane. Designed to reduce
swelling and inflammation in your feet and ankles reducing the risk of blood clots and deep vein thrombosis
(DVT). When you’re travelling for more than four hours on a plane, the possibility of developing DVT increases
by four times and DVT doesn’t discriminate based on age, weight and/or lifestyle. Everyone is at risk, especially
given the increased likelihood of dehydration from flying. You can get them on Amazon for $14 I found them
also at TJ Max in the travel section for less than $10
13. Plane Travel - Comfort Items:
• Eye-mask. They actually gave us one on our Delta flight… we did not get one from AA.
• Travel/ neck pillow. They also gave us one on our Delta flight, but Johnny brought his from home
• Blanket. They gave us one on our flight but Johnny brought his from home, he can’t sleep without it. :)
• Snacks for the plane.
• Gum. This is a huge help if your ears are popping from the altitude.
14. Sunglasses and Reading glasses (for mom)
15. Travel Clorox Wipes.
These are in the travel section at Walmart. Tray table on planes are filthy! Also good to help sanitizing your
room once you arrive.
16. Hand Sanitizer
17. Kleenex
18. Medicine you need on hand (Advil, prescriptions, eye drops)
19. Deodorant, Toothbrush, Toothpaste – so you can freshen up!
20. Reading materials/ Homework, books, etc.
B. In Carry-on Baggage:
Carry-on baggage should not exceed carrier restrictions and must fit in the sizer at the airport. In the Carry-on
baggage, bring anything that would be devastating to lose or have delayed getting to the destination. Checked bags
can be unpredictable so consider that in passing. C onsider liquid limitations for carry-ons. Here are the items:
1. GSD Uniform Kit.
Note: Since the players have all the same uniforms as their roommates, label all the clothes before you pack
them. This will help them keep them separated in the room!
2. Footwear: (I carry this on so there is no chance of getting lost or delayed).
• Soccer Cleats and Shin Guards
• Indoor Soccer Shoes (optional)
• Running shoes - Regular tennis shoes
• Turf Shoes – if you are bringing them
• Slides
• Good Shoes (optional)
• Change of clothes – Long flight. You may want a change of clothes in case of a nonscheduled lay over.
• Any other Heavy items that will fit from your packing list to help offset the weight of the checked b a g .

C. Checked Luggage:
For all regions, your checked baggage allowance depends on the carrier. Verify outside dimension
requirements: (total outside dimensions of each bag, length + width + height) and weight of 45 lbs. A
second checked bag - may be permitted for a fee check with your airline carrier. Overweight/Oversize
bags cost $. If your bag is going to be overweight… you might as well check an extra bag. I carry a weight
checker for luggage with me to avoid going over.
D. Clothing: Please label.
1. Additional training clothing:
• Extra Training shirts
• Extra training shorts
• Extra soccer socks
2. A sufficient amount of everyday clothing:
• Shirts
• Shorts
• Pants (maybe a couple of pair of longer shorts or pants for sightseeing...To enter any Christian sight,
including any church (certainly the Vatican) and the Catacombs, you must dress appropriately: no bare
knees, shoulders or midriffs. You may still dress casually, but modesty is what counts.
• White T-Shirts – good to wear under shirts and to bed with PJ pants
• PJ Pants
• Underwear
• Socks
• Swim Trunks
E. Toiletries/Bathroom stuff:
• Toothbrush
• Toothpaste
• Brush
• Deodorant
• Shampoo
• Shower gel
• Lotion
• Lip Balm
• Mini first aid kit:
o Band-Aids, etc.
o Advil
o Claritin
o Benadryl
o Melatonin (this is good to have if you have trouble sleeping)
o In case of injury - Ice Packs or Thermacare heating pads that you can use as needed
• Bathroom Wipes
• Extra Hand sanitizer for the room
• Q-tips
• Febreeze. in case they need to freshen up clothing between a wash
• Air freshener. This is a huge help! Those boys rooms get smelly! Although you can bring aerosol, I
stayed away from getting an aerosol freshener because it does not have a locking device and
aerosols can explode in flight due to pressure. I got this one for $3 at Target and it worked great:

http://www.target.com/p/j-r-watkins-lemon-scented-room-freshener-4- oz/-/A-13969420 They
have several fragrances.
F. Additional essentials
• Cool Towel – Can get very hot in summer. It would be good to have a Cool Towel to use
• Sunscreen - The sun can be very strong and this is, a must!
• Bug repellent – With it being hot it means they get mosquitos. You can bring repellant or buy some there. I
picked up a small 20z deet free pump spray at Bed, Bath and Beyond called Skeeter screen. It was $3.99.
• Mini Personal Fan (optional, but good to have)
• Adapters and Converters - Europe’s electrical system is different from ours in two ways: the voltage of the
current and the shape of the plug. American appliances run on 110 volts, while European appliances are 220
volts. Newer travel accessories and electronic gadgets are “dual voltage,” which means they work on both
American and European current. If you see a range of voltages printed on the item or its plug (such as “110–
220”), you are OK. Some older appliances have a voltage switch marked 110 (US) and 220 (Europe) — switch it
to 220 as you pack. Some American appliances are not equipped to deal with the voltage difference at all. They
will suffer damage and melt if plugged directly into a European wall outlet. To make this work, you will need to
buy a separate, bulky converter (about $30). Once you’ve dealt with the voltage, you’ll have to consider the
plug. A small electrical adapter allows American-style plugs for European outlets (which take two round
prongs).
• Lanyard and sleeve – for holding a room key. If it is around their neck they are less likely to leave it in their
room or lose it! This is a common frustration of coaches. There are plenty of cheap options at Walmart. https://
www.walmart.com/c/ep/id-lanyards Also, you may have one from a season pass or business
conference that you can repurpose.
• Drawstring Bag – It is helpful to have something to carry things during site seeing. i.e. power brick, money,
souvenir, etc.) Consider putting a drawstring bag in the carryon because it may come in handy that day. This will
come in handy during the week going out sightseeing, etc.
• Clothes Hook – we did not need this last time but always good to have to hang jackets and bags up on the
doors, which helps keep the room tidy. These are at the dollar store.
• Pop up Hamper – this is great to help with keeping kids clothes off the floor and separate. You can get one at
the dollar store.
• Regular Towel – always good to have an extra towel on hand.
• Laundry Loops.
• Hat – help to shade from sun
• Mini umbrella – for rain or to help shade from the sun.
• Snacks – I had Johnny pack a shoe box full of snacks from home to have in his room during the last trip. It was
gone in 5 days (he shared with his roommates) Granola bars, turkey jerky are examples of great things to put in
here and good to help with needing a snack between meals… or if training runs long, etc.
• Downtime:
• Books, Homework
• Gameboy, Nintendo DS
• Mini Soccer ball – Johnny does not go anywhere without one. It might end up in the carry on.

V. PACKING TIPS
• Waterproof items.
Llike shoes, drawstring bags, back packs with a spray that waterproof items, you can get at Walmart.
• Use Bounce Sheets.
In luggage to keep clothes fresh; I stuff them in shoes and put them between sweaters, etc. These come in
handy during laundry time. They also, can be used to reduce static cling on your clothes.
• Compression bags to help with space. These were AWESOME! They work by just rolling the end up and the
air comes out. So great for bulky stuff and help to keep things from getting wrinkled. $13 for a box of 5 at
Walmart. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ziploc-Space-Bag-Travel-5pk-Vacuum- bags/184717066
• Pack a white garbage bag in luggage.
To store dirty/wet clothes on the way home. If you have compression bags these work too!
• Use shower caps.
Oon the bottom of shoes and cleats to protect other clothing. I get them for cheap at the dollar store.
Then you can still pack socks in the shoes to save room in your suitcase.
