Dry ice
 Dry ice can be ordered from internal stores. Please indicate on the form if you require the lab
team to order the dry ice on your behalf.
 Dry ice comes in 10Kg bags and can be collected from Site Services in JW basement on
corridor 10.
 At least 5 Kg of dry ice is recommended for domestic shipments and 10 Kg for international
shipments.

Packing guidance
 Ambient shipments – these can be shipped in a rigid cardboard box. Lab Services have
stocks of shipping boxes, bubble wrap etc.
 Temperature dependant shipments – Polystyrene boxes should ideally be inside a
cardboard box to prevent damage during transit. New boxes can be ordered from Air Sea
Containers Air Sea Containers (airseadg.com). Lab services may have some spare boxes
in the store room. Spare ice packs for shipments at 4 degrees can also be found in the store
room.
Dry Ice shipments
 Shipments that also contain dry ice fall under UN1845 – Class 9 dangerous goods and must
adhere to IATA Packing Instruction 954:
- Dry ice must be placed between the secondary and outer packaging.
- Secondary packaging must be durable at dry ice temperatures.
- Outer packaging must not be airtight to allow for release of CO2 gas.
- Lab Services will label box appropriately.
