APOSTROPHE ‘S

We use apostrophe (‘s) to show that something belongs to someone or something.

This is Jennifer’s dictionary.

Our English teacher’s name is Harry.

What is your father’s job?

Is that your teacher’s car?

We can use apostrophe (‘s) as in the exercises written below.

1.Singular Nouns: We add apostrophe (‘s) before a singular noun.

Example: Alex’s car Alex’s car is new.

Jane’s father Jane’s father is young.

That boy’s hair That boy’s hair is curly.

2.Plural Nouns: We add only (’s) before a plural noun.

Example: Those boys’ sisters Those boys’ sisters are our classmates.

My friends’ shoes My friends’ shoes are new.

Your doughters’ school Your daughters’ school is in Ankara.

3.Exceptional Plural Nouns:

The following nouns are some of the exceptional plural ones ; men, women, children, mice,
feet, teeth, geese, oxen, people, etc.

Example: The men’s offices The men’s offices are in the city center.

These women’s names These women’s names are Jessica and Marry.

My children’s English My children’s English is not bad.

Important note 1: We add only (‘s) before the singular noun even if it ends in –s

Important note 2: We add (‘s) before the last name to show joint possession.

Important note 3: Sometimes we can use more than one possessive in the same sentence.

POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES

We use possessive adjectives to show possession or ownership of something. We use them to


show that something belongs to us or someone else. The possessive adjectives are my, your,
his, her, its, our, your, their

We use possessive adjectives before nouns.

We use have got and has got to indicate possession to say that something belongs to
someone. We use have got with I, we, you, they and has got with the third singular person
