Social media has become a significant part of our daily lives.

Therefore, the prevalence of social

networks is reducing the time spent on face-to-face communication among many people in
society. Everything has both sides, social media has served human life with many advantages as
well as its drawbacks.

On the one hand, social media is a powerful communication tool. Social media allows us to
connect with relatives, family, and friends globally. Distance is no longer a problem for people to
keep in touch with their loved ones. To illustrate, students who study abroad can easily make
video calls with their family just by using social network sites such as Messenger or Zalo, no
concern about geographical location. Moreover, social media offers us a globalized environment
to share and exchange stories, experiences, thoughts, and ideas. Facebook and Pinterest are two
good points in case, people can access to free tutorials and lessons published on such social
networks.

On the other hand, although social media was supposed to simplify human interaction in order to
assist people in socializing , it is now making us less sociable. Many people are spending too
much time on surfing and browsing web. Even worse, many, especially young people are
becoming addicted to these virtual sites. They compulsively check their phone and ignore people
around them. They choose social media over the potential of real interpersonal and face-to-face
interaction. Furthermore, not only do they pay less attention to people, but they are also less
concerned about their overall well-being. Many researches carried out show that social media
does bear relation to some physical and health problems. We have witnessed the rise of anxiety,
depression, and isolation among teenagers which is also partially enhanced by overusing social
media. Also, the overuse of social media is related to some diseases like obesity or insomnia
owing to a sedentary lifestyle and uncontrolled screen time.

In conclusion, even though social media has brought numerous advantages in our modern era,
the disadvantages are not small. From my perspective, I believe social media are doing more
harm than good because of overusing and this should be tackled properly.
