Letter from the Yoga Acharya

Blessed Self,
Om Namah Sivaya

Welcome to the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Ashrams and Centres India.

Our guru and master Swami Sivananda, after many years’ observation of the ways of the world found the
answers to humanity’s suffering in the ancient scriptures of India—the Vedas, Upanishads and Yoga Sastras. He
passed on the knowledge in a language easily accessible to modern life through his extensive writings. It is this
knowledge—integrating the classic four paths of yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Raja Yoga and Jnana Yoga—
that is the foundation of our teachings here at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Ashrams and Centres India.

Master’s disciple and our teacher and founder Swami Vishnudevananda-ji, with his experience of life East and
West, summarised the teachings in three short sentences. Health is Wealth. Peace of Mind is Happiness. Yoga
shows the Way. Along with his Five Points of Yoga—proper exercise, proper breathing, proper relaxation, proper
diet, and positive thinking & meditation—they form the bedrock of our classes and courses.

Master and Swamiji taught the deeper aspects of yoga, how to be of service to humankind, making no false
promises of enlightenment nor encouraging renunciation of the world. Instead the Gurus gave us the tools to
live rewarding and happier lives through self-discipline while at the same time fulfilling our family and societal
responsibilities.

Our ashrams and centres are run by volunteers and employees alike, from all walks and stages of life—some
married with children, others celibates—and from all over the world. Each one of us is dedicated to the
teachings. We teach what we practise, we practise what we teach.

We extend a warm invitation to you all to visit us and become part of the Sivananda family. Experience a
genuine and heartfelt yoga community in our ashrams and city centres. Learn how to integrate the ancient
wisdom into your daily life to keep yourself healthy, happy and peaceful. As Swami Sivananda would say an
ounce of practice is worth tons of theory !!

May Master’s and Swamiji’s blessings be with you always.

Pranams,

Prahlada

The Yogic Life – The Five Points of Yoga

01-Proper Exercise (Asana)

The 12 classical postures of the Sivananda yoga tradition exercise every
part of the body, stretching and toning muscles, joints, the spine and
entire skeletal system. Postures also work on internal organs, glands
and nerves to keep all systems in radiant health. By releasing physical
and mental tension they liberate vast resources of energy.

02-Proper Breathing (Pranayama)

Breath connects the body with its battery the solar plexus where
tremendous potential energy is stored. When tapped through
specific yogic breathing techniques, this vital energy (prana)
is released resulting in physical and mental rejuvenation. The
practice of Pranayama also calms the mind and sharpens the
intellect.

03-Proper Relaxation (Savasana)

Yoga teaches us powerful techniques of deep relaxation. By
consciously relaxing every muscle of the body and controlling the
breath, we rejuvenate the nervous system and attain a deep sense
of inner peace. In addition practices such as meditation lead us to a
more profound appreciation of life, and bring joy and contentment
into our daily lives.

04-Proper Diet (Lacto-vegetarian)

Besides being responsible for building our physical body, the foods
we eat have a profound effect on the mind. Yoga advocates a lacto-
