WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT (5)
Focus Skill: Compare & Contrast
Read the passage. Then choose the best answer for each question
Cats and Dogs
Vinay’s family has two pets—a cat and a dog. Vinay’s favorite is Scout, the dog.
His sister Sana prefers Princess, the cat. Their parents like both pets equally.
The family pets are similar in some ways. Both of them love to cuddle. They will
curl up at Vinay’s feet when he sleeps at night, but he has to leave his door
open. Also, both Scout and Princess love to play. Vinay can toss a ball and
Scout will fetch it. Sana waves a string around and Princess tries to bat it with her
paws. But the similarities stop there.
Scout is very loyal. When Vinay gets home from school, the dog is waiting. Vinay
thinks cats are too independent, because sometimes Princess hides from Sana.
Princess, unlike Scout, doesn’t always want to be petted. But Sana likes her cat’s
independence. It means less work. Cats clean themselves. They do not need to
be walked. Dogs, on the other hand, need a lot of attention. They need a walk
at least twice a day. Dogs need baths, too, but Vinay doesn’t mind. He likes
spending time with his dog.
