PE 212: MATERIALS AND ENERGY BALANCE
TUTORIAL 2: HW-2 STEADY STATE REACTING MASS BALANCE
1: Suppose the input rates of N2, H2, and NH3 in the production of ammonia are specified as 12, 40, and
0mol/h, respectively, and the rate of production of N 2 is given as -4mol/h. calculate the final
composition in the product stream.
2: The stoichiometric H2-N2 mixture (75% H2-25% N2) for synthesizing NH3 is made by mixing producer
gas (78% H2, 20% CO, and 2% CO2) and water gas (50% H 2 -50% CO). CO, which acts as a synthetic
catalytic poison, is removed by reacting this mixture with steam to form CO 2 and H2 via shift reaction,
CO+ H 2 O↔ C O2 + H 2 . CO2 is removed by scrubbing with a suitable absorbent. Assuming that all
compositions are in % mole and that just enough steam is added to completely convert all CO, calculate
the ratio in which producer and water gas streams are to be mixed
3: Chlorination of benzene produces a mixture of mono-, di-, tri-, and quadro-substituted products via the
reaction chain:
C 6 H 6 +Cl 2 → C 6 H 5 Cl+ HCl
C 6 H 5 Cl+Cl 2 → C 6 H 4 Cl + HCl
C 6 H 4 Cl +Cl 2 → C6 H 3 Cl + HCl
C 6 H 3 Cl+Cl 2 → C 6 H 2 Cl+ HCl
The primary product in the chlorination is trichlorobenzene, which is sold as a dry cleaning agent, but of
course concurrent production of the other chlorobenzenes is unavoidable. Suppose a 3.6:1 molar feed
ratio of Cl2 to benzene yields, on a HC1- and Cl2-free basis, a product with the composition (all mol %)
C6 H6 Chlorobenzene Dichlorobenzene Trichlorobenzene Tetrachlorobenzene
1% 7% 12% 75% 5%
If 1000 mol/h benzene is charged to the reactor, calculate the mol/h HC1 byproduct and C6H3Cl3 primary
product produced.
4: Formaldehyde, CH2O, is produced industrially by partial oxidation of methanol, CH 3OH, with air over a
silver catalyst. Under optimized reactor conditions, about 55% conversion of CH 3OH is attained with a
feed consisting of 40% CH3OH in air. Although CH2O is the main product, some production of
byproducts such as CO, CO2, and small amounts of formic acid, HCOOH, is unavoidable. Therefore, the
gross reactor output is usually scrubbed to separate out a gas stream containing CO 2, CO, H2, and N2 and
a liquid stream containing the unconverted CH3OH, the products CH2O and H2O, as well as the
undesirable byproduct, HCOOH. Assuming that the liquid stream contains equal amounts of CH 2O and
CH3OH and,0.5% HCOOH, while the gas stream contains 7.5% H 2. Calculate the complete
compositions of both streams.
