Exercise 1 – Identify the Type of Sentence

A. Identify whether the following sentences are simple, compound, or complex


sentences. Also, mention which of the clauses is the main clause and the subordinate
clause.

1. I did not know that this food was meant only for the staff.

2. She is innocent, so she has appealed to the court.

3. If you are not ready with the song, it is better to let them know.

4. She will come home or I will stay back at her place.

5. In the evening, I am going to the park.

6. The sun looks amazing today.

7. I remember the day that we met very well.

8. Nithi is not keeping well, yet she decided to go to work.

9. After they reach the hotel, they will inform us.

10. We are going to the park.

B. Examine the following sentences and determine the type of each.

1. Close the gate when you leave.


2. Do you enjoy playing chess?
3. My favourite colour is blue.
4. Where is the nearest hospital?
5. What a fantastic performance!
6. Try this delicious pasta.
7. It is raining today.
8. Please water the plants.

C. Identify different kinds of sentences present in the following passages.

Passage 1: "The rain poured down relentlessly, drenching everything in its path. Thunder rumbled
in the distance, adding to the dramatic atmosphere. People scurried for cover, seeking refuge from
the downpour. The streets turned into temporary rivers, and umbrellas popped open like colorful
mushrooms. Despite the gloomy weather, there was a certain beauty in the way raindrops danced
on leaves and glistened on windowpanes."

Passage 2: "After months of preparation and anticipation, the day had finally arrived. The stage
was set, adorned with stunning decorations and vibrant lights. The audience eagerly took their
seats, buzzing with excitement. The curtains lifted, revealing a talented cast ready to perform their
hearts out. The music swelled, the dancers leaped, and the actors delivered their lines with passion.
The magical world of theater came alive before their eyes."

Passage 3: "The serene lake sparkled under the midday sun, its surface as smooth as glass. Boats
bobbed gently on the water, their occupants enjoying the peacefulness of the moment. A gentle
breeze rustled the leaves on nearby trees, creating a soothing symphony. Families picnicked along
the shore, laughter and chatter floating in the air. It was a perfect day to relax and soak in the
beauty of nature."

Passage 4: "The bustling city pulsated with energy as people hurried to their destinations. Cars
whizzed by, horns blaring impatiently. The skyscrapers reached for the sky, their windows
reflecting the dazzling sunlight. Street vendors peddled their wares, their voices blending with the
city's cacophony. Amidst the chaos, there was an undeniable charm to the urban jungle, where
dreams were chased and opportunities awaited."

Passage 5: "The old man sat on the park bench, his face etched with lines of wisdom and
experience. He watched as children played freely, their laughter echoing through the air. Memories
of his own youthful adventures flooded his mind, a bittersweet mix of joy and nostalgia. The sun
began its descent, casting a warm glow over the park, reminding him that even in the twilight
years, there was still beauty and wonder to be found."

Passage 6: "In the heart of the forest, a symphony of sounds filled the air. Birds chirped
melodiously, their vibrant feathers flashing through the leaves. Squirrels scampered up and down
tree trunks, gathering acorns for the coming winter. The rustling of leaves and the trickling of a
nearby stream added to the orchestra of nature. The forest was a sanctuary, a place where peace
and harmony reigned supreme."
Passage 7: "The bustling marketplace was a feast for the senses. Fragrant spices wafted through
the air, while colorful fabrics dazzled the eye. Traders haggled energetically, their voices creating
a vibrant ambiance. Stalls were laden with exotic fruits, shimmering jewelry, and unique artifacts.
The marketplace was a melting pot of cultures and traditions, where every corner held a new
surprise and inspiration."

Passage 8: "The crisp autumn air carried the promise of change. Leaves painted in fiery reds and
oranges carpeted the ground. Families gathered in orchards, picking ripe apples and enjoying the
sweet taste of the season. The scent of bonfires mingled with the aroma of freshly baked pies. It
was a time of harvest and gratitude, a time to embrace the beauty of nature's transformation."

Passage 9: "The classroom buzzed with the excitement of learning. Students eagerly participated
in discussions, their minds hungry for knowledge. The teacher guided them through the intricacies
of the subject, igniting sparks of curiosity and understanding. Textbooks were opened, pens
scribbled across papers, and ideas flourished. In this dynamic environment, education became an
exhilarating journey of discovery."

Passage 10: "The beach stretched for miles, its golden sands meeting the gentle waves. Seagulls
soared overhead, their cries echoing in the breeze. Families built sandcastles, while surfers rode
the undulating waves. The sun kissed the horizon, painting the sky in hues of pink and purple. As
the day drew to a close, the beach remained a place of serenity, reminding all who visited of the
beauty and power of the sea."

Exercise 2 – Combine the Sentences to Form Compound Sentences


Combine the following sentences using a coordinating conjunction or a conjunctive adverb
to form compound sentences.

1. My mother is sick. My mother is going to the doctor.


2. Jibin has gone to Hyderabad. Jibin has not found any jobs yet.
3. Nalini was not satisfied with her birthday dress. Nalini wore it anyway.
4. Jaffar called me yesterday. I was not able to attend his call.
5. Tina had to present the paper today. Nancy volunteered to do it.
6. It was raining the whole day. We decided to go to the park.
7. Firoz will pick you up. We will book a cab for you.
8. Nobody knew where to go. We asked some random people for directions to the hills.
9. Let them know. You will have to suffer the consequences.
10. My mom was cleaning the house. I helped with the plates.
11. She likes to paint. She also enjoys sculpting.
12. The sun was setting. The sky turned various shades of orange and pink.

17. It started snowing. We built a snowman in the backyard.
18. The restaurant was crowded. We had to wait for a table.
19. He missed the train. He had to take the next one.
20. The alarm rang loudly. The students quickly left the classroom.

Exercise 3 – Combine the Sentences to Form Complex Sentences


Combine the following sentences by making use of a subordinating conjunction or
correlative conjunction to form complex sentences.

1. You speak up. Nobody is going to know.


2. You are the only friend. You taught me right from wrong.
3. I was not happy. I went to the reception for the sake of my friend.
4. You do not finish it. You will have to face the consequences.
5. I do not know the person. He owns a brand new Mercedes Benz.
6. My brother does not watch animated movies. My brother liked Kungfu Panda.
7. I don’t think I will be able to make it. I missed the bus.
8. You should do it. I will have to ask Praveen to do it.
9. There are no trains available. We took a flight.
10. Seetha finishes her work. Seetha will be on her way.
