Christian Medical College Vellore

NEWSLINE
JANUARY 01, 2024

New Year Message

It is the time of the year when we look back and are grateful for all the blessings we received as an institution
and to look forward in anticipation of the challenges and the work to be done. We go forward into the new
year assured of God’s presence and blessings and the knowledge that together, there is nothing we cannot
do.

Over the past 123 years, CMC Vellore has consistently served the poor and needy; the vision of our founder
has been preserved through the ages. Dr. Ida had made it her life purpose and identity to provide health care
to those without access to it. Outreach, charity, education, and empowerment have been her identity ever
since. We derive our purpose and identity by following our calling and in the footsteps of our founder.

This New Year, let us be aware and reaffirm our identity and what we mean to others as individuals and as a
community to serve and not expect to be served. We are here by design, and our purpose here is divinely
crafted. In the face of all challenges and adversity, may we be blessed to stay true to this calling.

In I Corinthians 12:27, we are identified as part of the body of Christ. Let this new year also be an opportunity
to refresh and renew. A newly refurbished self with a renewed vigor to fulfill the purpose of another year that
God has added to us.

With this renewed awareness and resolution, I wish you all a blessed and joyous new year!

With Regards,
Dr. Vikram Mathews
Director

Obituaries
• Dr. Kiran Sarkar (nee Das) (MBBS batch of 1963), passed away on 8th December, 2023.
Dr. Kiran, a cherished alumnus of CMC Vellore (1963 Batch), left an indelible mark in the
hearts of all who knew her. Her batchmates and roommates in the women’s hostel remember
her fondly as a fun loving person, a great companion and an affectionate friend.
She started her career at the then Dichpalli Leprosy Hospital, before returning to CMC Vellore
for training in Leprosy Reconstructive Surgery (RCS), under Dr. A.J. Selvapandian
(Orthopaedics).
Dr. Kiran’s journey at CMC Vellore was not just an academic pursuit; it was a cherished chapter of her life, filled
with friendships and memories that she fondly recounted to family and friends ever after.
Dr. Kiran Das married Mr. Prakash Sarkar, a resident of Purulia, on 16th September, 1974. She was then posted
at TLM Purulia for the next 10 years (with brief deputations to TLM hospitals at Naini, Jhalda and Kothara).
During her time, she transformed the lives of several thousand Leprosy affected, correcting their various deformities
and treating their wounds. With Dr. Kiran's dedication, Purulia came to be known as the main Leprosy Surgical
Centre for the whole country.
Dr. Kiran, thereafter, spent 2 years at TLM Bankura, before taking a break from TLM (1985 to 1990), to be with
her family in Purulia. However, Dr. Cornelius Walter (batch of 1958-59), the then director of TLM, visited Purulia
and persuaded Dr. Kiran to come back to TLM at Purulia in 1990.
Dr. Kiran continued performing hundreds of reconstructive surgeries for leprosy each year, not just at Purulia but as
a visiting surgeon to many other TLM and Govt. hospitals all over India, till her retirement in 2004.
She continued providing medical services to the local community in Purulia until the onset of the Pandemic in 2020.
Dr. Kiran’s faith, family and her work for The Leprosy Mission was a cornerstone of her existence. She is now in the
arms of Jesus, experiencing the peace and joy of the life beyond.

We invite all who knew Dr. Kiran to join us in celebrating her remarkable life and legacy. Her laughter and joy will
continue to live on in those who were fortunate enough to know her.

As we bid farewell to Dr. Kiran, we remember her not with sorrow, but with gratitude for the time we shared and the
impact she had on our lives. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
