Sheet 10: Integration by Substitution

1. Integration by a linear substitution : u = a x + b.

2. Trigonometric substitution: 𝑢 = 𝑎 𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝜃), 𝑎 𝑡𝑎𝑛(𝜃), 𝑎 𝑠𝑒𝑐(𝜃)
In the following table we list trigonometric substitutions that are effective for the given radical
expressions because of the specified trigonometric identities. In each case the restriction on is
imposed to ensure that the function that defines the substitution is one-to-one

Form of the radical expression (given Substitution

integrand)

1 −𝜋 𝜋
√𝑎 2 − 𝑢 2 𝑢 = 𝑎 sin(𝜃) , ≤𝜃≤
2 2

2 −𝜋 𝜋
√𝑎 2 + 𝑢 2 𝑢 = 𝑎 tan(𝜃) , <𝜃<
2 2

3 √𝑢 2 − 𝑎 2 𝜋 3𝜋
𝑢 = 𝑎 sec(𝜃) , 0 ≤ 𝜃 < 𝑜𝑟 𝜋 ≤ 𝜃 <
2 2

Note: we can use hyperbolic substitution instead of the trigonometric substitution

a sinh(𝜃), and a cosh(𝜃) are better substitutions than 𝑎 𝑡𝑎𝑛(𝜃) and 𝑎 𝑠𝑒𝑐(𝜃), respectively, as they are
easier to differentiate and integrate, and have nicer principal domains. 𝑎 sin(𝜃) is a better substitution
than 𝑎 𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ(𝜃) as it is easier to differentiate and integrate. The following examples illustrate this:
Integrand Substitution Result

𝑥2 𝑥 = 2 𝑠𝑖𝑛ℎ𝜃 ∫ 𝑠𝑖𝑛ℎ2 𝜃 𝑑𝜃
√𝑥 2 + 4
𝑥 = 2 𝑡𝑎𝑛 𝜃 ∫ 𝑡𝑎𝑛2 𝜃 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝜃 𝑑𝜃

√𝑥 2 − 4 𝑥 = −2 𝑐𝑜𝑠ℎ𝜃
, 𝑥 ≤ −2 − ∫ 𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ2 𝜃 𝑑𝜃
𝑥2

𝑥 = 2 𝑠𝑒𝑐 𝜃
− ∫ 𝑡𝑎𝑛2 𝜃 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 𝑑𝜃

√9 − 𝑥 2 𝑥 = 3 𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝜃 9 ∫ 𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝜃 𝑑𝜃

𝑥 = 3 𝑡𝑎𝑛ℎ 𝜃 9 ∫ 𝑠𝑒𝑐ℎ3 𝜃 𝑑𝜃

3. The General Form of integration by substitution is u = g(x).
