Intermediate (B1) / 1
Language Level/Number of Students:
45 Minutes
Duration of Lesson:
By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to write a formal email with correct structure, appropriate
tone, and clear context.
Lesson Objective:
5 Minutes
Warmer:
Personal reflection: I will discuss with the student if they have ever written emails in english before and if so,
what kind of emails where they. Based on the answers they give, that will help me know what areas they are
knowledgeable in.
10 Minutes
Presentation:
I will begin with teaching the structure of a formal email and write it on the board. Starting with subject line:
clearly state purpose of email, greeting: “Dear (Name/Title),”, body: include polite introduction, main content,
and closing. Finally the sign-off: “Sincerely,” or “Regards”. I will then show both formal and informal
examples in emails. Highlight differences in language and tone.
15 Minutes
Practice:
Drafting an email: the student will write to a university admissions office to request details about an english
program. I will guide the student by brainstorming ideas like why are they writing?, what information do they
need? I will work on it together with them focusing on tone and grammar.
10 Minutes
Production:
Independent writing: The student will then write their own version of the email, using the example we did as a
reference. I will then review the final product, then suggest improvements when needed.
5 Minutes
Cooler:
The student will then read the email out loud to me, imagining they are sending it. We will then discuss how
they would respond if they replied. Practicing on what the student learned.
