This is the Table of Contents,

which can be automatically
generated if you choose the
headings correctly.
1 Introduction

In every report, you should have an introduction. This part is to introduce the
fundamentals, the ABCs, giving the readers a big picture on the core idea of the
experiments. You may include some textbook explanations, or materials that you can
find from online, to support the theory and knowledge that will be used in this report.

Normally, in a formal report, the “Introduction” section will be showing the

background, objectives and scopes of the work reported. However, since this is a lab
report, you do not have to follow exactly in this style, but it may help you in
constructing your storyline.

1.1 Circuit ABC Background (or say Review of Theory)

In circuit analysis, there are many rules and theories. It says … life is a like box of
chocolate…… etc

1.2 Scopes (something similar as the Goals in the handouts)

It will be good to present the scopes/goals in point form. This part will be in
accordance with the following sections.
 To show that study can make a person happy
 To show that
 To show that

Again, you DO NOT have to follow exact wording as above, it just gave you an idea,
how to make the content link to the following structures.

2 Experiment 1: Study makes me happy

In this section, explain what you have done in Experiment 1, how you did it, and what
the outcomes are, what you have observed.
You can follow the handouts, but if you do so, please DO NOT copy every single
lines. Try to summarize the procedure in your own words.

Or alternatively, you can also arrange the structure in your own unique way. For
example, you may want to solve the circuit using conventional circuit analysis
methods first. Then followed by solve the circuit using simulation software, and
compare the results. After that, construct the physical circuit with electric components
to do the direct measurements. Show your results step by step, and last but not least,
discussion is an important section which may show how much you really understand.
You may give a brief summary about what you have observed/learnt, and discuss
about these observations. E.g. try to give some valid reasons if your measurement
results are not as good as the theoretical ones.

Same story, different ones will tell differently. Your choice.

Just as a guideline, you probably should include the following things in your report:
1) The given circuit to be solved/tested. (Figure 1).
2) A photo of wire connection on breadboard (Figure 3).
3) Calculation based on theory, you don’t have to show all the detailed steps, but do
show the train of thoughts and put down necessary equations for clarity.
4) Schematic with simulation results using Pspice (Figure 2 S).
5) Measurement results as you have recorded in the Lab Sheet.

Add Captions for

each figure, and try
to explain briefly
what this figure is
about.
Figure 1 Sample circuit.

As shown in Figure 1, blah blah blah….. Each figure should

have some context to
refer to, otherwise it
is isolated.
Figure 2 Schematic drawing using Pspice.

You can also add some statements in

your figures, to help the readers to
understand. This helps if you try to
explain something in the context
related to the figure.

Resistor
1

Figure 3 Sample picture of breadboard connection.

The actual circuit connection is shown in Figure 3. One thing to notice here is that,
there is one resistor always give problem, as indicated as Resistor 1 in Figure 3. This
could be due to blah blah blah……

Table 1 Measured values and calculated values

Nodal Voltage Theoretical Value Simulated Value (Pspice) Measurement
V1 120 120.00 118
V2 81.29 81.29 81.5
V3 89.03 89.03 90.03

You can be creative with the data display. Other than just a table showing the
relationship, if you feel draw a graph/chart using Excel can explain better, and even
lead to an interesting observation, please feel free to do so.

3 Experiment 2: Study is never about GPA

only, but a better one is always welcome

4 Experiment 3: Set a goal in life is very

important, not yet have one, then find one

5 Experiment 4: Keep a good living style,

enjoy campus life, but DO NOT waste

time, life is short after all

6 Something to highlight

6.1 Use Caption for Figures

In MS Word, you can “References” tab, to find “Insert Caption” to add caption to the
figures. Click “Insert Caption” and choose the label Figure (if don’t have Figure label,
you may click New Label to create one.)

And if you need to refer to the corresponding figure, you may go to “References” tab,
you may see cross-reference under Captions. Click on the cross-reference, choose
Figure as reference type, then you may see all the figure captions you have input in
the context; and choose “Only Label and Number” for the “insert reference to” option.
For example, as shown in Figure 1. You may change the font of the automatically
generated captions and references. The advantage of this method is that you can later
insert a new figures into the content, the caption numbers and references can be
automatically updated. Otherwise, if you have 20-30 figures, you can imagine how
tedious it might be if you want to insert a new figure at the beginning.

6.2 Equations

You may include equations to explain the theory or show the calculation steps. You
may or may not label the equations. You can use MS Word Insert Equation command
to input the equation. In Office 2016 and later version, the use of equation command
is quite user-friendly.

7 Conclusions

By now, you should have include the discussions in each chapter/section. Still, it is a
good habit to keep a final chapter as Conclusions. This is to conclude what you have
done. In accordance with the scopes in the introduction, so does the results fulfill your
purpose of this lab session? Anything in your opinion, still can be improved? Do you
have a better understanding through all these?
