1. Which of the fruits shows 0 + 2 = 2?
Answer: __c____
c. “empty” Pic of 2 Pic of 2

Let’s Read:
You learned that adding is just putting numbers
together. In the boxes below, box C contains 3 piglets
and box D contains 5 piglets.
Pic of 3 piglets Pic of 5 piglets
If we C together theBox
boxput D into the Box

how many piglets will there be?

Pic of 3 piglets Pic of 5 piglets
box C Box D Box E
Therefore, when 3 piglets and 5 piglets are put
together in box E, there will be 8 piglets.
Pic of 8 piglets
box C Box D Box E
Now, how about if we put another animal, let’s say 2
puppies, in box C and nothing in box D.
Pic of 2
puppies
box C Box D
That would mean that there will be zero puppies in
box D.
Pic of 2 “zero

If we put together the puppies in box C and box D
into the empty box E, how many puppies will there be?

Thus, if

there will still be 2 puppies.

This time, let us go back to the boxes with piglets in
them. You learned that when we put together 3 piglets
(Box C) and 5 piglets (Box D) the result is 8 piglets (Box E).
Pic of 3 piglets Pic of 5 piglets Pic of 8 piglets
box C Box D Box E
Now, if we interchange Box C and Box B, then we put
together the piglets into Box E, what will happen to the
number of piglets in Box E?
Pic of 5 piglets Pic of 3 piglets ?
box D Box C Box E
Therefore, even if we interchange Box C and Box B,
when we put them together into Box E, there will still be 8
piglets in it.

box D Box C Box E
The numbers 5 and 3 are called the addends and 8 is
called the sum. Interchanging the addends does not
change the sum.
Let’s Watch:
Formative Assessment Resource Package with Focus On 21st Century Skills
Subject Quarter 1
Watch the video entitled “Adding Zero” on YouTube.
Click this link to watch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGXp5GjqifQ.
The video is about addition and adding zero. It can
be seen in the video that addition is putting numbers
together and adding zero to any number results in the
same number.
Abstraction:
Go through the following items and note how the
sums are obtained.
1.
Pic of 5 Pic of 5 popsicle
“empty”
popsicle sticks + = sticks
5 + 0 = 5
2.
Pic of 5 Pic of 5 popsicle

When you add o to any number, the answer you get
is the number.

4.

3 + 16 = 19
Even when you reverse two numbers, the sum you
get is the same.
Feedforward:
Remember that adding is putting together.
Sometimes the words combine or plus are used instead
of putting together.
When there is nothing, it means zero. Therefore,
adding zero to any number means we are adding
nothing. That is why, the result is always the number.
The two numbers being added are called the
addends and the result is called, the sum. Changing the
order of the addends will not change the sum.

The answer is 15 balls because 8 balls plus 7 balls
make 15 balls.
Let’s Read:
Adding or putting numbers together is easier using
symbols. For example, you want to combine the apples
in boxes F and G into box H.
Pic of 3 apples Pic of 4 apples Pic of 7 apples
box F Box G Box H
We shall write the symbols:
3 + 4 =7
This is called an addition sentence wherein 3 and 4
are the addends, 7 is the sum, “+” is the addition symbol
or plus sign, and “=” is the equal sign. This is read as
“three plus four equals seven” or “three plus four is equal
to seven”.
When we interchange the addends, the addition
sentence will now be:
4 + 3 =7
Formative Assessment Resource Package with Focus On 21st Century Skills
Subject Quarter 1
The sum is still 7. Remember that the sum does not
change even if we change the order of the addends.
Likewise, if we combine the fishes in box J and box K
into box L as illustrated below.
Pic of 9 fishes Pic of 9 fishes
box J Box K Box L
We write,
9 + 0 =9
Let’s Watch:
Watch the video entitled “1st Grade Math Addition |
Add | Addend | Plus | Equal | Sum | Addition
Sentence” on YouTube by clicking the link
https://youtu.be/ijRM2blDq3E.
The video is about addition of numbers. It presents
different parts of the addition sentence - the addends,
plus sign, equal sign, and the sum.
Abstraction:
Read the following items and note how the addition
sentences are formed. An explanation for the sum is
also provided.
1. If the birds below will be added.
Pic of 1 bird
+ “empty” =
The number sentence will be:
__1 +Formative
___0 Assessment
= 1 Resource Package with Focus On 21
st Century Skills
Subject Quarter 1
The answer is 1 because adding zero to any
number is adding nothing. So, the sum is just the
number being added to zero.
2. If the boxes are interchanged, the addends will
also interchange in the number sentence.
However, the answer is still 1 because the sum is still
the same even when the addends are
interchanged.
“empty” + Pic of 1 bird
=
The number sentence is
0 + 1 =1
3. Now, if we add 6 bananas and 11 bananas.
Pic of 6 Pic of 11
bananas + bananas =
The number sentence will be:
6 + 11 = 17
The answer is 17 because 6 bananas and 11
bananas when combined make 17 bananas.
4. If we interchange the addends, the result is still 17
because as explained above, interchanging the
addends does not change the sum.
Pic of 11 Pic of 6
bananas + bananas =
Formative Assessment Resource Package with Focus On 21st Century Skills

The number sentence is,
11 + 6 = 17
Feedforward:
Remember:
1. If zero is added to any number, the sum is
always the number.
2. If two numbers are added, the sum is still the
same even if the two numbers being added
are interchanged.
3. Working with symbols makes the addition easier
and quicker.
