CVS 365-Assignment 1-January 2025
(b) Define a transition curve and state its role in road construction. (2 Marks)
(c) Describe the two main purposes of Vertical curves in highways (2 Marks)
(d) Differentiate between the following terms as used in curve designation (4 Marks)
(i) A summit curve and a rising curve
(ii) A sag curve and a falling curve
(iii) Reverse curve
(iv) Simple circular curve and compound circular curve
(e) Explain the following terms for a simple circular curve:
Point of intersection and deflection angle to any point
Through Chainage and Degree of Curvature (2 Marks)
(f) The tangent length of a simple curve is given as 315.064m and the deflection angle for a 25m
chord is 1° 56´ 40” Calculate:
(i) the radius
(ii) the total deflection angle (4 Marks)
(iii) the length of curve
(iv) the final deflection angle
(g) A circular curve 800m radius has been set out connecting two straights with a deflection angle
of 42°. It is decided for construction reasons that the mid-point of the curve must be moved 4m
away from the centre. i.e towards the intersection point. The alignment of the straights is to
remain unaltered. Calculate
(i) The radius of the new curve
(ii) The distances from the intersection point to the new tangent points
(iii) The deflection angles required for setting out 30m chords of the new curve
(iv) The length of the final sub-chord. (4 Marks)
(h) The centre line of a new railway is to be set out along a valley. The first straight AI bears N
75° E while the connecting straight IB bears S 60° E. Due to site conditions it has been
decided to join the straights with a compound curve. The first curve of 500m radius
commences at T1 situated 300m from I on straight AI and deflects through an angle of 25°
before joining the second curve. Calculate the radius of the second curve and the distance of
the tangent point T2 from I on the straight IB. (5 Marks)
(i) An EDM slope distance AB is determined to be 561.276 m. The EDM instrument is 1.820 m
above station A, and the prism is 1.986 m above station B. The EDM instrument is mounted
on a theodolite whose optical centre is 1.720 m above the station. The theodolite was used to
measure the vertical angle (+6°21’38’’) to a target on the prism pole; the target is 1.810 m
above station B. Compute;
i. The horizontal distance AB ( 3 Marks)
ii. The elevation of station B, if the elevation of station A =186.275 m. (1 Mark)
