Lesson 3
The discovery of the uses of multiple mirrors and lenses
opened many doors in science: from viewing microorganisms
to exploring distant stars. Human as we are, our eyes have
limitations yet these limitations paved way for discovering the
different applications of mirrors and lenses.

Think About This!
To secure the store from shoplifters,
aside from CCTV camera, store owners
hang a convex mirror on the corner.
Why is this so?

When will you use the
following optical devices?
• Microscope
• Telescope
• Binoculars
• Magnifying glass
• LCD projector

Optical Device
• is a device that processes light waves (or photons),
either to enhance an image for viewing or to
analyze and determine their characteristic
properties

Concave Mirrors
this type of mirror is what the
dentist uses in magnifying the
area behind your teeth to check
on cavities and tooth decay.

Concave Mirrors
For illuminating purposes, you
can see concave mirrors used in
headlamps, flashlights and
spotlights.

Convex Mirrors
A car’s side mirrors enable the
driver and its passenger to see
the vehicles behind.

Convex Mirrors
Also, while in mall supermarkets
and in some convenience stores,
you may notice mirrors hanging
on corners from which you can
see your reflection and those of
other people.

The Human Eye
Our eyes are our natural cameras. Some of the basic and
fundamental parts of a camera functions just like how
the different parts of our eyes work. Among these are
the lens, the aperture, iris diaphragm, shutter, and
photographic film.

The Human Eye
• Lens - gathers and
bends light rays
inwardly to the eye
• Iris - controls the size
of the pupil
(opening) to regulate
the light that enters

The Human Eye
Concave lenses, such
as eyeglasses and
contact lenses are used
in correcting myopia
(nearsightedness).
O p t i c a l Te c h n o l o g y Science 10
The Human Eye
Myopia is a condition in
which light rays focus in
front of the eye’s retina
instead of, on the retina.
The result of this
condition distant
objects to appear blurry,
while near objects
appear normal.
O p t i c a l Te c h n o l o g y Science 10
The Human Eye
Hyperopia is the eye
condition that enables
someone to see distant
object clearly but
makes nearby object
seem blurry.
O p t i c a l Te c h n o l o g y Science 10
The Human Eye
To correct hyperopia,
converging meniscus
converging lens is used. The
converging meniscus lens
converge light before it enters
the eye eventually reducing
the image distance.

Telescope
optical device that produce
magnified images of distant
objects
O p t i c a l Te c h n o l o g y Science 10
Telescope
O p t i c a l Te c h n o l o g y Science 10
Refracting Telescope
a telescope that uses lens to
gather and focus light from
distant objects
O p t i c a l Te c h n o l o g y Science 10
Reflecting Telescope
a telescope that
uses a mirror to
gather and focus
light from distant
objects
O p t i c a l Te c h n o l o g y Science 10
Light Microscope
an optical device that forms
magnified images of very
small, close objects

Camera
an optical device used to
record permanent images

Camera
O p t i c a l Te c h n o l o g y Science 10
LCD Projector
a type of video projector for
displaying video, images or
computer data on a screen
or other flat surface.
O p t i c a l Te c h n o l o g y Science 10
Binoculars
are two telescopes mounted
side-by-side and aligned to
point in the same direction,
allowing the viewer to use
both eyes when viewing
distant objects.
O p t i c a l Te c h n o l o g y Science 10
LASER
an optical device that produces a narrow
beam of coherent light
Light Amplification through Stimulated
Emission of Radiation
O p t i c a l Te c h n o l o g y Science 10
Hologram
a three-dimensional
photograph of an object
