1. Failure data of 20 pump’s pre-filter were collected and the analysis showed that the time
to failure can be estimated following Weibull distribution with β=2.2 and η=6.4 months.
Estimate the interval of the true population parameters based on 90% Confidence level
(hint: refer to page 55 on Reliability Mathematics slides) [10 marks]
2. a) As a reliability engineer, you are tasked to study the failure distribution of
communication cards used for motor operated valves. The following data were collected
and you have stopped the observation at 16500 hours. Electronic component typically
follows exponential distribution. Using probability plotting method, estimate the MTTF
for the communication cards and the 95% confidence interval for the failure rate.
[20 marks]
Communication Observation time Remarks
card (Hours)
1 5930 Failure
2 11225 Failure
3 1675 Failure
4 16500 Failure
5 12880 Failure
6 625 Failure
7 16320 Failure
8 8640 Failure
9 16500 Failure
10 4445 Failure
b) Evaluate the goodness of fit using K-S test. Is the selected distribution acceptable to
represent the failure pattern? [10 marks]
3. The following time to failure data for mechanical seals leaks were collected from an
offshore installation. Based on your initial assessment, the failure times would be best
fitted to Weibull distribution. Using probability plotting method estimate the
parameters for the distribution. [10 marks]
Mechanical Observation time Remarks

1 190 Failure
2 460 Failure
3 445 Replaced during PM
4 38 Failure
5 85 Failed due to power failure
6 240 Failure
7 280 Replaced during PM
8 287 Failure
9 26 Failure
