The impact of globalization visibly and largely affects the politics and the economy of the

country but its effect on the mindset and the culture is noticeable gradually in the way people think
and react. Some of these good and bad points of this worldwide phenomenon are obvious from

The Graduation Standard

The implementation of the nerv graduation standard for High-School Students has evoked people to
bring different responses. Some people’s ideas are for some others againts the rule. Some people
agree with the rule because it indicates students’ mastery of the whole material or the competence
they have managed to have over the past three years. The result of the final exam is also significant
for students’ future study in the higher level.

In addition, we are far left behind by our neighboring countries that have implemented a higher
graduation grade standard. If the standard is omitted. then student will get left behind even further
by those students from neighboring countries students.

However, some other people believe that imposing a high standard will not be effective. The results
of the exams have proven to be unreliable. How can you asses the students’ competence only in a
couple of days. A smart student for example, may get a low grade just because he is sick during the
exam. On the other hand, an idle student may achieve the standard due to luck. There should then

There are a lot of discussions as to whether children should be given homework or not.

Some people claim that children do enough work in school already. They also argue that children
have hobbies that they want to do after school, such, as sports or music. A further point they make is
that a lot of homework is pointless and doesn’t help the child learn at all.

However, there are also strong arguments against this point of view. Parents and teachers
argue that it is important to find out whether children can work on their own without the support
from the teacher. They say that the evening is a good time for children to sit down and think about
what they have learned in school. Furthermore they claim that the school day is too short to get
anything done that needs doing and it makes sense to send home tasks like independent reading or
further writing tasks that don’t need teacher’s support.

On balance, I think that some homework is a good idea but that it should only given at the
weekend when children have more time.

4. How do we compare the second and the fourth paragraph?

A. Both paragraphs argue that homework is necessary for students.

C. The second paragraph supports that students need homework, but the fourth paragraph does
not.

Being On time

Being on time is a beautiful social ethic and one of great importance, as it creates efficiency in
system and implies respect for one another. However, it is one the many values that is not easy for
our students to learn.

Inner discipline, one that comes from an understanding of the set rules and regulation, is the highest
form behavior. Most excellent schools try to instill this with a loving environment. Why, even adults
arrive late to meeting, work, et c. Here, we do not agree that late comers should be shut out. They
can be given warnings, most of which are enough to make them try their best to reach the school on
time latter. If this fails, invite the parent to school.

By closing the gates, the school is behaving cruelly, to which we prefer not to expose our children.
Every school has responsibility to implant good educational principle, but it should be in appropriate
ways. Good schools create competitive students who can organize themselves effectively in society,
so that everyone gets a quality life as a result of the ethics and values learned for as long as 12 years.

Children are precious and dependent on the adult for guidance. Understanding them is the key, and
to this end, both parents and schools must work hand in hand without playing the blame game.

Boarding School Education

There are many arguments in favor of a boarding school education. Nevertheless, the boarding
school is not always the best education institution for everyone.

At an early age interacting and communicating with people is very important for a child’s personal
life and can be especially helpful for his/her future. In a boarding school, shy children can take
advantage of interaction through communal activities. The boarding school also offers a great variety
of activities such as arts, sports, and music that allow children to demonstrate and develop
specialized skills in their free time.

Furthermore, the structured way of life and strict rules at the boarding school may helps students to
get used to a well ordered way of life. The manners and social skills will help them to become more
responsible and confident, and to develop their talents in leadership. Professionally trained teachers
and educators in the boarding school can offer excellent education without the parents’ constant
supervision.

In spite of these good points, it is not advisable to send a child to a boarding school if he/she is a
dependent learner. A boarding school usually demands that student learn independently. In
addition, the boarding school should not be seen as a measure to solve inappropriate behavior or
unsatisfactory study performance. Instead of improving, problematic children may close off their
relationship with their peers and teachers.

In conclusion although a boarding school may provide good education to many children, it is not
recommended for those who are strongly attached to their families. They may become frustrated
and socially isolated.

Skateboarding

Anybody who is over the age of six knows that there is nowhere safe for skateboarders to skate. This
prevents young people from enjoying an active, energetic and adventurous pastime.

Just watch a local street for a short while and note the steady stream of skaters speeding up and
down the footpaths. Toddlers can be trampled on and old ladies can be knocked down as they
struggle home carrying their cat food from supermarkets.

Skateboarding is a serious sport that improves young people’s health. It increases fitness, improves
balance and strengthens the joints in knees and ankles. Although it appears to be a solo sport, when
groups practice together and compete to perform stunts or runs they form firm friendships.

Young people should be prevented from becoming overweight couch potatoes. If they are actively
involved in skating, they do not smoke, take drugs or break laws for fun.

Kids will always seek thrills and excitement. They need to practice their 180s, 360s and Ollie’s free

Should Americans be forced to Public Transportation?

First, let me define what the question is and isn’t asking. It isn’t asking if we should we all abandon
cars right now, nor is it asking if we should abandon them completely, nor is it asking if every
American should do so. It is asking weather some Americans should have to take public transit some
of the time, and I would say yes.

Oil use and pollution aside, in some cities like Los Angeles and New York there just isn’t room for any
more roads, so in order for large cities to grow, they need more people to take public transit or risk
permanent traffic jam. One bus can safely hold 40 people so even at half capacity that’s nearly 20
cars’ worth of space in traffic cleared up, and nearly 20 parking spaces that don’t need to built.

There are a lot of people that can take with transit little inconvenience but simply don’t because
they never have in the past. If residents in areas with plenty of transit had to buy transit passes as
part of their property taxes then they would have little excuse not to bus occasionally. QA number of
universities already bundle a ‘U-Pass’ with their tuition feeds, forcing their students to take the bus.
When given the change the majority of those students have voted to keep these programs.

A similar system in apartments where a portion of the tenants are not issued parking spaces in
exchange for a discount on their rent would also be community car to several apartment tenants
that arrange a schedule for the car, and this program gets many positive reviews.

Fuel Price

Government should not raise fuel price to solve the problem of economic issues. People were
affected severely with the high fuel price like last year. Obviously they cut their spending. As an
example, they had to buy lower quality of rice or palm oil. There were also fewer buyers of
secondary commodities like flour, or canned meat or fish.

Furthermore, the condition of low income family will become even worse because their expenses
will increase while their salaries will not. Many companies will have to trim the number of
employees because they are incapable of managing, buying or selling price, standard wages and
personal affairs.

E. The government should decrease the standard of wages.

Faster Planes and Cheaper Flights

Faster planes and cheaper flights are making it easier than ever before for people to travel. In the
most ‘developed’ societies, visiting exotic places is a sought-after status symbol. The tourism
industries of both developed and developing countries have recognized this fact and are learning to
take advantage of it.

There are, however, some problems associated with this new industry. Firstly, there is the increasing
crime rate. Some local’s tourists as an easy prey because, not only are they in unfamiliar territory
and therefore less able to take care of themselves, but also they carry visible items of wealth, such
as cameras and jewelery which can be disposed of quickly for profit.

Another major problem is health. With greater mobility comes greater danger of spreading
contagious diseases around the world. One carrier returning home could easily start an epidemic
before their illness was diagnosed. Moreover, the emergence of many diseases which resist
antibiotics is causing scientists to be increasingly concerned about this issue.

Also to be considered is the natural environment, which can be seriously threatened by too many
visitors. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, for example, is in danger of being destroyed by tourists and
there are plans to restrict visitors to some of the more delicate coral cays.

These are just three of the reasons why any country should be wary of committing itself to an
extensive tourism development program.

There is no best way to deal with pests in agriculture. Pesticides which are commonly used may
cause many problems. I think combining different management operations is the most effective way
to control pests.

Firstly, the chemicals in the pesticides may build up as residues in the environment and in the soil
which absorbs the chemicals. This reduces the quality of farm product.

Secondly, pests can gradually become resistant to pesticides. This means that newer and stronger
ones have to be developed.

Lastly, some pesticides affect non target plants and animals such as fish and bees. This affects the
ecology and environment as well.
So, understanding of ecology of an area helps a lot in pest control. Pesticides should be chosen and
applied carefully so that they don’t affect the ecological balance and environment.

Therefore, integrated pest management is a safe and more effective option to fight pest in
agriculture and livestock.

I strongly believe that mobile phones are necessary. My reasons for this belief are that these phones
are convenient for business people who travel a lot, and they are handy for emergencies.

To begin with, mobile phones are necessary in the case of emergencies. For instance, if you fall down
a set of stairs in a building and are badly injured and can’t reach a pay phone, it is handy to have one
to use. Or, if your car breaks down in the middle of the night in a strange neighbourhood, it would
be dangerous to leave it in search of a public phone booth.

My other main reason is that mobile phones are convenient for business people. For example, if you
are out of the state or even overseas and you have to contact a client to do some important work, it
is useful to have one to use. By using a mobile phone, important information can be received. People
can’t stay in an office all day waiting for their phone to ring. Some people have to go and do jobs or
they will go out of business. You can even send faxes or messages and use the internet with your
mobile.

In conclusion, I believe that mobile phones have now become a necessary part of every day life.
Instant communication will ensure that information can be passed on with a simple press of a
button. Whether this is to do with business or personal information or emergencies, it goes to show
that they are necessary in the new millennium.

A. One reason

B. Two reasons

C. Three reasons

D. Four reasons

E. Five reasons

A. They can contact clients

B. They can do some important works

C. They can receive some important information

D. They can send some data and surf Internet

E. They can run bussines by staying in and out office

16. What is the main idea of the second parragraph?

A. The advantages cellular phones during the emergencies

B. The solution to do when your car breaks down

C. The danger to leave a mobile phone in the car

I personally think that reading is a very important activity in our life. Why do I say so? Firstly, by
reading we can get a lot of knowledge about many things in the world such as Science, technology.
Sports, arts, culture, etc written in either books, magazine, newspaper, etc.

Secondly, by reading we can get a lot of news and information about something happening in any
parts of the world which can we see directly.

Another reason, reading can give us pleasure too. When we are tired, we read books, newspaper or

Learning English through music and songs can be very enjoyable. You can mix pleasure with learning
when you listen to a song and exploit the song as a means to your English progress. Some underlying
reason can be drawn to support the idea why we use songs in language learning.

Firstly, “the song stuck in my head” Phenomenon (the echoing in our minds of the last song we
heard after leaving a restaurant, shopping malls, etc) can be both enjoyable and sometimes
unnerving. This phenomenon also seems to reinforce the idea that songs work on our short-and-long
term memory.

Secondly, songs in general also use simple conversational language, with a lot of repetition, which is
just what many learners look for sample text. The fact that they are effective makes them many
times more motivating than other text. Although usually simple, some songs can be quite complex
syntactically, lexically and poetically, and can be analyzed in the same way as any other literary
sample.

Furthermore, song can be appropriated by listener for their own purpose. Most pop songs and
probably many other types don’t have precise people, place or time reference.

In addition, songs are relaxing. They provide variety and fun, and encourage harmony within oneself
and within one group. Little wonder they are important tools in sustaining culture, religion,
patriotism and yeas, even revolution.

Last but not least, there are many learning activities we can do with songs such as studying
grammar, practicing selective listening comprehension, translating songs, learning vocabulary,
spelling and culture.

From the elaboration above, it can be concluded that learning through music and songs, learning
English can be enjoyable and fun.

The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind

In a small village in Malawi where people had no money for lights, nightfall came quickly and
hurried for farmers to bed. But for William, the darkness is the best way for dreaming. He dreamed
of building things and taking them apart like the trucks with bottle-cap wheels parked under his bed
and pieces of radios that he’d crack open and wonder. If I can hear the music, then where is the
band.

His grandpa’s tales of magic also whispered in the pitch black of his room. Witch planes
passed through the window while ghost dancers twirled around the room, as if a hundred men were
inside their bodies.

At dawn in the fields, William scanned the maize rows for magical beings, then wondered as
a truck rumbled past. How does its engine make it go? “Pay attention where you throw that hoe!”
his father shouted “You’ll cut off your foot.”For all its power over dancers and flying things, magic
could not bring the rain. Without water, the sun rose angry each morning and scorched the fields,
turning the maize into dust. Without food, Malawi began to starve. Soon William’s father gathered
the children and said, “From now on, we eat only one meal per day. Make it last.” In the evenings,
they sat around the lantern and ate their handful, watching hungry people pass like spirits along the
roads.

Money also disappeared with the rain. “Pepani,” his father said, “I am sorry. You will have to
drop out of school.” Now William stood on the road and watched the lucky students pass, alone with
the monster in his belly and the lump in his throat. For weeks he sulked under the mango tree, until
he remembered the library down the road, a gift from the American. He found science books filled
with brilliant pictures. With his English dictionary close by, William put together how engines moved
those big trucks, and how radios pulled their music from the sky. But the greatest picture of all was a
machine taller than the tallest tree with blades like a fan. “A giant pinwheel? Something to catch
magic?” Slowly he built the sentences: “Windmillscan produce electricity and pump water.” He
closed his eyes and saw a windmill outside his home, pulling electricity from the breeze and bringing
light to the dark valley. He saw the machine drawing cool water from the ground, sending it gushing
through the thirsty fields, turning the maize tall and green, even when farmers’ prayers for rain went
unanswered. This windmill was more than a machine. It was a weapon to fight hunger. “Magetsi
amphepo,” he whispered: I will build electric wind.

In the junkyard, pieces appeared like rusted treasures in the tall grass. A tractor fan. Some
pipes. And bearings and bolts that required every muscle to remove. “Tonga!” he’d shout to the
birds and spiders, holding up his prize. But as William dragged his metals home, people called out,
“This boy is misala. Only crazy people play with trash!”

After many weeks, William arranged his pieces in the dirt: a broken bicycle, rusted bottle
caps and plastic pipe, even a small generator that powered a headlight on a bike. For three days, he
bolted, banged and tinkered while chickens squawked and dogs barked and neighbors shook their
heads, saying, “What’s misala doing now?” His cousin Geoffrey and best friend Gilbert soon
appeared. “Muli bwanji,” they greeted. “Can we help with the electric wind?” “Grab your pangas and
follow me,” he said, and took them into the forest. Together, they swung their sharp blades into the
trunks of blue gum trees, then hammered them together to make the tower. Standing atop, William
shouted, “Bring it up!” while the boys tugged and heaved. a Crowd gathered below and gazed at this
strange machine that now leaned and wobbled likea clumsy giraffe. Some giggled, others teased, but
William waited for the wind.

Like always, it came, first a breeze, then a gusting gale. The tower swayed and the
bladesspun round. With sore hands once slowed by hunger and darkness, William connected wires
to a small bulb, which flickered at first, then surged as bright as the sun. “Tonga!” he shouted, “Ihave
made electric wind!”

“Wachitabwino!” a man yelled. “Well done!” As the doubters clapped and cheered, William
knew he had just begun. Light could not fill empty bellies, but another windmill could soak the dry
ground, creating food where once there was none. Magetsi a mphepo-electric wind- can feed my
country, William thought: And that was the strongest magic of all.
