Customer I’m flying to London. I’m going to study there for a year.
Agent How fun! Sounds like a great trip! I see your information right here. Are you checking
any luggage/baggage today?
Customer Ye I have two suitcases and one backpack.
Agent Did you pack the bags yourself?
Customer Yes, I did
Agent Can you put them on the scale for me please?
Agent I think your suitcases are a bit too heavy. They’re over our weight requirement.
Would you like to take something out of one the suitcases and put it in your carry-
on?
Customer Lemme take some of my clothes out. Here you go again, thanks.
Agent Thank you, now your bags are ready to go. Here’s your boarding pass. This is your
seat number and the departure gate.
Customer Is that a window seat or an aisle seat?
Agent It’s an aisle seat. Now please go straight on, take the elevator to go upstairs, then
look for gate 54.
Customer Thanks for the instruction. What time do I need to be there?
1
Agent It says here your flight is at 2:20, you should get to the gate an hour before departure
so please be there at around 1:20.
Remember to be careful in these situation:
• Are you carrying any firearms or flammable materials?
• Have you left your luggage unattended at any time?
• Has anyone given you anything to carry on the flight?
• Are you aware of the regulations regarding liquids in your carry-on?
Task A1: work in pair, read the conversation multiple times so you can remember it. Then perform
your role-playing to the teacher without looking at the conversation
Task A2: memorize the words in red, then, with your little english, tell your teacher what does each
term/word means. You have five minutes to prepare for this task, you can ask your classmate.
After that, teacher will show the glossary meaning to see if it matches the students’s guess.
b. Security check:
• There are two pieces of equipment in security: you put your bags through the X-ray
machine, and you walk through the metal detector. Some airports also use a body
scanner for a more careful check.
• The X-ray machine has a conveyor belt that moves your bags automatically through the
machine. You can put small items like keys or money into plastic bins.
• You have to show the security check your boarding pass and your passport. After they have
let you go on through, you need to put the hand-luggage and other belongings in a bin on the
conveyor belt, for eg: jewllery, coat/jacket, phone, belt, shoes, .... If you forget to take one of
those things out to put on the conveyor belt, the security may have to ask you to step aside
from the scanner because it triggers the arlam, they will now scan you with a body scanner
to identify if you bring anything prohibited.
Task B1: Fluency and practice
Task B2: Look at the video and give meaning for the terms in red
c. During boarding
After you’re done with the security check, go find the exact gate that departs you. Be careful for
the notifications coming out from the public speakers. They could change the departure gates but
the airport employees won’t be able to help with that because they are just responsible for their
gates only!
Questions:
- What do you need to do after finish with the security check?
- What do we have to be cautious of?
- What do you thinkg you might hear when you’re waiting to board?
Task C1: Now, listen to these announcement and explain it to the teacher.
